They are keeping both sites open because if they shut down Thotbot all the users would migrate over to Wowhead and we don't really need all those people over here, we already have a rogues forum. The fact of the matter is that when I started playing I used thotbot, sure, most of the comments were trolls, but it had alot of useful information on quests (mostly) that helped me level my first toon through Azeroth.
I can't believe this kind of discussion could even exist.
I can believe it because it all got started when a fan of Thottbot entered the thread and started majorly trolling with his nasty comments about Wowhead. Like one of the commenters on this thread already said, it's a reflection of the general behaviour of the Thottbot community. Which is probably one of the reasons the site went downhill over the years while Wowhead's star kept rising.
Can't you just take all the good things that Thottbot does that Wowhead doesn't and then just do them on here?Maybe add an extra tab to items and NPC's called 'Thott Comments' so we can maintain the history, but build anew.I certainly used to use Thott back in the day but found it quite unintuitive and the whole white thing? Not cool. So came here and never went back. And I'm loathe to say that people are tribal about a couple of database websites for an online game. Meh.
People still use Thottbot? When I first started playing like five years ago I used Thottbot. I always thought it was horrible and ugly and cumbersome. Then started using Wowhead and haven't ever been back. What exactly does Thottbot have that Wowhead doesn't? You know what, it doesn't matter. Wowhead isn't changing. Thottbot isn't really changing, other than just querying Wowhead's DB. So, not really news worthy at all.
Back in the day, I started using Thottbot as my go-to site. It was da bomb. Then, it started getting questionable ads, and the community over there just... let me be kind and say it just turned into something that wasn't for me. The signal to noise ratio in my opinion was abysmal. So, I moved to here. Been here for years. And Wowhead just keeps getting better. I was a little worried when it was bought by Zam, but I've had nothing but good experiences here so far. It really helps my gameplay when I'm looking for quests, or quest givers, or where a recipe drops, etc. And I love the Wowhead looter addon.
All I see as a result of this is Wowhead's DB servers coming under more stress from more queries originating from thottbot.
I am a poster and user of thottbot.com. Thottbot was a great site, with an original idea behind it; why make systematic information the reason people look up items, quests, etc. in a database? They put the systematic information in there as well, but the real info was from the comments. Even in its early years, thottbot was a different site than others. For instance, thottbot had no security measures on accounts; type a username and password that isn't taken, and you're in. Wowhead, to me, just feels like another boring site, and I to this day cannot use it as a helpful database. I don't know what it is about the way it is set up, but that thing makes it unusable for me.I am grateful to the moderators of this site, for trying to welcome the thottbot community, and for understanding that it's a pretty big deal for us who stayed, but for me, and I am sure I speak for many of my fellow thottboters, wowhead just isn't as useful, no matter how outdated thottbot was.Team thottbot will live on, not only in our minds and our memories, but in a site dedicated to the thottbot veterans, and a guild for the same thing.
Wowhead users: Stop being cranky with the Thottbot users.Thottbot users: I know you guys got the rug pulled out from under you, and coming over to a thread full of "Wowhead wins!" comments can't be helping. But don't be jerks about it.Let's take a sample item on Wowhead, or on the new Thottbot if you prefer. In both cases, you:
