I am monitoring this thread.
The WoW team needs to take a cue from D3. Make PvE and PvP separate. Stop balancing skill ans abilities around PvP and screwing all the real WoW players.
why don't you guys ask them why the music in Diablo 3 sucks?Maybe pay Matt a good chunk of money and get someone good back in there. Most gamers don't usually care about game music. But Diablo fans love the creepy, dark, and eerie music.Bring back Matt.
The difference is that PVP in d3 doesn't have material rewards. PVP is an extra that doesn't matter. In WoW it's core gameplay.
PvP is NOT core gameplay in WoW. With the exception of PvP servers it is possible to have played all the way from classic/Vanilla to now and have never taken part in any PvP at all. In fact, it is preferable if your primary concern is raiding. PvP is an extra in WoW as well. An extra which, by forcing the stats and abilities to be roughly equal between PvP and PvE, has only served to harm the game as a whole.
There are some pretty hardcore PvPers out there who would disagree with you--like the guy with 100k hours of Arena experience, begging them to reconsider making D3 a competitive sport. Can't please 'em all.
Yes, PvP is not core in the game based on the fact that you could have played the game since inception and never PvPed. However, taking that same mindset, the same is true of raiding. You could have played this game since beta and never raided or done a dungeon. Does that mean that game balance shouldn't included raiding? Of course not, that's stupid. As far core game goes, in the terms described above, then questing is the only thing that is "core", unless you just make a character and have it stand in the starting area and never move it.PvP is central to the player base. Raiding is central to the player as well.
I have personally been playing WoW for the past 4 years off and on, and I have never needed to PvP. I seem to get that too much in L2. But it is interesting that you put PvP to Raiding... in some cases... I think it would depend on the person, which is probably why they have separate server types, but good point. Yet in D3, like D2, I don't see PvP being a big deal until later on down the road. From my stand point, D2 was all about the story, character build, gear, battles... etc. PvP would not be central to me though, because I don't do it.
PvP=still not central to game play, and significantly less so than raiding. While it may be true that you never HAVE to go into a dungeon or raid to play the game, the entire idea of the storyline, the lore surrounding the quests necessary to level(until recently at least), all lead directly to dungeons and raids. Some amount of the lore does lead you to Battlegrounds, but absolutely zero of any other part of the game leads you to any other form of structrured PvP. As well, as previously stated, up until very recently you could not level in any kind of PvP at all. Hence, PvP=a separate game.
Magick, I'm no lore nut, but it seems all your "lore" would be solved if it weren't for pvp. The whole time in Icecrown basically it seemed like this:Tirion: OMG, the factions keep fighting. Let's kill LK so I can get sanc.Players: /fightTirion: /facepalm. Now, if pvp was dead, basically all lore problems would fix themselves. Didn't the factions band together once and fight off the Legion? If we banded together, we'd kill all the bosses, and that would be no fun.Once again, no lore nut, and I'm quite inexperienced in all the stuff I just talked about.
I'd like to add something. There is PvP. There is also faction versus faction. In WC, WC2,WC3, alliance and horde fought. That is Warcraft. Alliance vs Horde is the foundation of Warcraft. How can you NOT have PvP if you have the two central factions of alliance and horde. Nearly all warcraft lore is about alliance fighting the horde. So, in perspective of all warcraft, then PvP in more central then raiding.Another thing to debunk raiding as core. We didn't kill Illiadin, and we didn't kill LK, nor a lot of other bosses. Why? Because 'we' are not apart of lore and the things we do in a raid isn't completely apart of lore.
Thread is locked, but we can reply? Thanks for getting the D3 updates, Malgayne. There's a lot of us not based in the US who don't have easy access to BlizzCon updates, so it's nice to see them here.
hmm I didn't realize we could reply.
Malgayne @ 10/23/2010 at 2:43 PM PSTScored a good seat.
