I usually open with Mirror Images and pop all cooldowns. That way I get insane burst from the start, without having to worry about threat.
You should spend some of your Heroism badges to buy a gem for that cloak sir!
You mages make me sick. Out DPS the locks and half our threat while you're at it. :P(I hold no true animosity against mages though, they were bottom of the barrel long enough to enjoy the top seat for a while)
As a lock, I still resent Invis because it can wipe all threat :(beats the hell out of our 50% threat wipe that can be outranged if the area is big enough (has happened before to me when another lock pulled aggro and the boss took 2 steps out of range right when i hit mine) >.<
Try handling threat as a shaman.. Know the Svala Sorrowgrave encounter in UP? I beat on her while we were waiting for her to come down, and, of course, the tank didn't get a chance to (or didn't want to) taunt. And for those of you that say "But you have Wind Shear!", think again. That will only negate 2k threat, pitiful when you consider a 10k Lava Burst (which generates 7k threat after talents).IIRC, that tank realized that Vigilance on me was a good idea soon after.
In before the red mage.1200th post, cheeky little addict that I am.Edit:Dark Knight/ Samurai class has no spells and you are guaranteed to put up the highest DPS in the group/raidWe have a chase123 copier.Sad.
There is a single issue I would like to point out:If you use 100% of your mana within 2 minutes (Or say 95% or something else close enough) even with evocation, mana gem and a mana potion (for non-alchemists) you won't bring it up to 100% again unless the mage has a particularly low mana pool. This means in a 10 minute fight This may happen:Start - 100% mana (consider this to include the effects of replenishment)2 minutes down - 10% mana - first evocation+friends.New mana pool - 90% mana4 minutes down - 0% mana - second evocation+friendsNew mana pool - 80% mana5 minutes 30 seconds down - 0% mana - Mana potionNew mana pool - 15% mana6 minutes down - 0% mana - third evocation+friendsNew mana pool - 80% manaAt this point the mage is now out of a potion cooldown, and his gem is gone. He can sacrifice the mana to make another gem, but it is very costly. Also, if he should continue at this rate he will run OOM in about the same time as when he needed his potion, after 1.5 minutes. What people don't realize is that our mana management isn't as easy as I am making it look. It's not all about using the same amount of mana in 2 minutes. Most mages (assumption) try to mix Icy Veins, Arcane Power, and Bloodlust together. In that 15 seconds where all three are active a mage can blow 150% of his mana pool if he tried, or rather if he did not try to manage it. As a mage with a 1 second GCD and Arcane Blast cast time during this Bloodlust period, I know if I watch the meters instead of my mana I could potentially go OOM in under 10 seconds (6 seconds if you consider my mana cooldowns aren't always perfectly timed up with the Bloodlust cooldowns. It still depends on my stack of Arcane Blast at the time that Bloodlust is cast.)In short, an arcane mage can shine in any fight, but don't assume it is an easy spec to play because we use 3 buttons to fight, and 3 buttons to escape. It is a very difficult thing to top the meters as an arcane mage on those 10-15 minute long fights.
Just for the record, gearing for MP5 like the OP, isn't the STANDARD. You can do whatever you want but MP5 = Healer; Spirit = DPS.If you get stuck with it because the rest of the stats are huge upgrades, fine, but actively pursuing it isn't going to help your DPS.
In before the red mage.I would have posted it if it wasn't for these meddling kids.
arcane mage has a burst like This
MP5 = Healer; Spirit = DPS.Irrelevant to trees and holy priests, mainly.@The OP - I always wondered why Arcane mages seemed to always be OOM after a fight or half-way through, I thought Arcane had better mana management than the other mage specs. Also, liking the picture in the post. ^^
So is wowhead going to turn into another wow.com?
I've yet to see an 80 mage that isn't Arcane since 3.3.
So is wowhead going to turn into another wow.com?I hope not, otherwise the WoW General would be flooded with blog posts. This seems to just be a bored blogger, though.
This seems to just be a bored blogger, though.Malgayne's brother. So yeah. :P
I raid as an arcane mage, and I can tell you from experience that burning through your mana resources every two minutes and having to evocate is an overall damage done loss. The time spent evocating does not count against your DPS, therefore you may still top the charts, but I only run Recount now when I've upgraded a few pieces of gear or I'm leading a PuG.Back off to a 3-stack of AB if you have to. Gem more spellpower over haste if you find you have to evocate.
Go go rogue blog :|
I've yet to see an 80 mage that isn't Arcane since 3.3.Actually 3.2.On topic: yes arcane is good, arcane is even better when you need burst, but that doesn't mean the other specs are worthless.I recently switched to frost as alternative spec for heroics and this was the result in a bored VoA25 run.The nice thing about frost is that mana is a non issue. Koralon died and my mana was half full without the use of any managems/evocation.This is me.
I have to agree, Arcane Mages is the top notch dps class in the entire game.Mostly because they are fun, cooldowns and 4 buttons, what else does one need!
Threat management? As a tank I'm anxious to test my skills vs an arcane mage now ^^ofc I have to admit I get a misdirect threat boost everytime I charge in ;)
