yeah i have to admit arcane is nice but im going to stick with deep fire spec sense 3.1, which i know is against what all the other mages are doing but i like to be different and at least i can still pull some decent dps and dont have to worry about threat that much :)
Arcane's fun. The -40% threat talent does help tremendously with all our cooldowns. It's a good thing 4pc T10 is hooked into Mirror Image because 18% damage for 30 seconds is going to be silly when stacked with everything else at the beginning of the fight.I'm also glad the Arcane spec now has some form of raid utility in 3.3. The 3% party/raid damage that Ret Pallies and BM hunters use to have is nice for heroics.
The most favorite fight for me as an arcane mage is the Twin Val'kyr fight. My mage is specced into Incanter's Absorption, and since the essences from the portals absorb damage from the Val'kyr, I end up seeing my DPS being well over 11k. In my most recent fight, I was at 12.7k.
Tl;dr raiding as an Arcane Mage:Pop all cooldowns, 112112112112112...
http://www.wowhead.com/?profile=us.windrunner.mathi%C3%A6sThats my mage, for credibility reasons.ABx4->Missile Barrage spam is only 2%~ less DPS than AB spam at a fourth of the mana consumption... Arcane isn't like it was in BC. Just AB spamming in ANY SITUATION OTHER THAN AT THE END OF A FIGHT is a DPS loss due to having to Evocate, etc later. If you use the ABx4->MBAM rotation, you should be able to last 4minutes without having to Evocate, and only have to sit through a few ticks of Evocate to finish the fight, and depending on luck, you may not need to Evocate at all. If you had done those burn cycles of AB spam, you would've Evocated twice--between 10 and 14 seconds of downtime. You're trading 2% higher DPS for avg of 12 seconds downtime. The only time this is worth it is when that 12seconds of downtime is about equivalent to 1% of total time... when a fight is 20 minutes long. The above information is accurate according to any and all mage simulations, such as Vontre's MageGraf and Rawr.Mage
Arcane threat management annoying?Come back when there aren't classes that drop a WHOPPING 3K threat for 20 energy. In fact, cower is so incredibly underpowered, that the actual dip in threat you get from it comes more from loosing 20 energy and spending a GCD than the actual effects of the ability. And let's not even start mentioning fade.Credit to people who manage to play an arcane mage well, people that manage the very best DPS they possibly can, and that help the raid in everything they can do as well, but please, arcane is a joke and far too hard to suck at.
we like to tease our arcane mages in that they keybind arcane blast to one half of the keyboard, and arcane missiles to the other half, and then slam their fists over and over again to DPS. they are, however, quite powerful, so i guess it's a decent tradeoff
My new main is an arcane mage since 3.2 - for obvious reasons. I will not claim to NOT be a flavor of the month player - I am and I always will be. I took the time to level every class to 80 except DK - since thats a flavor of the year and I do not care to have everything handed to me on a silver platter. Arcane mages in their current state have insanely easy threat management due to Mirror Image, Invisibility, and short cooldowns. Using these cooldowns at the right time will eliminate a good portion of your threat for the duration of the fight. As opposed to blowing Mirror Image before you start your rotation - try using it about 30-45 seconds into the fight (provided the boss fight allows) and then using whatever mage addon you have to track your CDs pop Invisibility when Mirror Image has 2 seconds left on it. You eliminate ALL threat you built while Mirror was up while not having to worry about it for the previous 30 seconds either. You now have a clean slate. Threat management right now is VERY easy as a mage and I look forward to seeing how they change it in Cataclysm.
For what it's worth, I didn't say that I find managing my threat as a mage to be HARD, just annoying. =P
Mirror Image also dumps agro
