Second Gate In Icecrown Citadel Will Unlock In 28 Days
2009/12/09 at 12:09 PM
it has been discovered that speaking to your faction's NPC (Muradin or Saurfang) will tell you how many days are left until the next gate's unlocking. Right now it is listed as 28 days which would put the unlock date for North American realms on
January 5, 2010
If these numbers stay consistent between wings we most likely won't see the Lich King until
March 2, 2010
. I know it sounds like a long time but maybe this will allow them to test and tune the encounters a bit before we hit those dates and allow a lot of people to catch up so everyone has a larger pool of players to work with.
It seems our assumption that the rest of the gates will be on 28 day timers was wrong. Daelo has just corrected us and the extra long wait on the first gate is because of the holidays.
As noted in game, the release of the Plagueworks in Icecrown Citadel occurs 28 days after patch 3.3.0 was released. After the Plagueworks is available, you will then wait less than 28 days for the next wing to become active. The extended length of the initial 28 day delay is simply due to the timing of the Holidays.
In other news, the initial number of attempts to defeat the major bosses at the end of each wing of Icecrown Citadel has been increased by 5. This means you’ll have 10 attempts for Professor Putricide, 15 attempts when The Crimson Halls are available, then 20 when the Frostwing Halls becomes attackable.
After some discussion with some fellow Wowhead staff members (HELLO CORGAN!) we have re-estimated the date the last wing will open. According to the original plan for Icecrown Citadel progression (which you can find
) the raid instance will be split into 4 sections. The first section which is the Lower Spire contains
is already unlocked. After that is the The Plagueworks which which will be what we will be seeing open up on
January 5, 2010
Following that if the 28 days continues to be the standard for gate opening the The Crimson Hall will open up on
February 2, 2010
and house the
Blood Prince Council
. Then finally the last section will open up which is The Frostwing Hall and The Frozen Throne which should open up on
March 2, 2010
that will feature
and our most hated adversary
The Lich King (Icecrown)
All these dates are subject to change and nothing is official but the numbers seem right as long as the 28 days is going to be the standard between all the gates.

What, is he waiting for the gate to melt?
Actually, I think they're trying to make sure everyone can get their progression group geared and then get some of the non-progression groups into it.
Just one look at the numbers of people who actually got into AQ, Old Naxx, and the Sunwell should give you an idea. Its no fun to design a ton of high-end content only to have nobody see it.
I don't think that was the main intention behind delaying the raid. You see, Blizzard has to bridge time 'till Cataclysm, as they have stated they won't pull any Sunwell-like instances anymore (so no 3.4).
And the fact that almost no one got into those raids during the times of Vanilla and BC was simply because WoW was a grindfest back then, and the raids were much more difficult then they are nowadays.

instead of making fights hard, we will make them unfightable.
