It looks like it's going to be a race change, which is disappointing. Working in a betrayal mechanic, letting you keep the same character as a turncoat, would be a lot more interesting. More difficult to implement, no doubt, but definitely more interesting.

Goodbye GOOD alliance players... I'd stay no doubt.. simply because I prefer alliance, but I'm sure there's many more then ready to switch to horde, whilst i doubt theres that many horde willing to switch alliance... who knows..Honestly I think it would be harder to implement a radical race change then a betrayal... I see exploitation abounds with this idea though, what with quests, mounts, etc.Personally I hope this idea gets thrown into blizz's graveyard
NOOOOOO! game ruining event! NOOOOOO!
Woah!Nice. I hope they won't over-do it, though, and that it'll be useful function!
I like the ability to switch to horde cause undead will always look cooler than gnome rogues, why did i ever roll gnome idk? BUt the bad thing is now all the alliance players will switch horde, how am i supposed to win WGs with like 20 people ? I think if this does happen, they should only be able to switch to a realm with an uneven amount of either faction.
Wow, next let's throw in the option to change race and while were at it, class. So stupid, seriously this is getting absolutely ridiculous.
An Alliance orc?
The way i read it, this is only possible on PvE servers unless you delete all your characters from a server. When they do this, they better add a function to switch your characters with ONE payment (up to 3 chars i guess) and same for the transfering service because while i would consider a server change, i am NOT going to pay a stupid amount of money (read: €45) because i want all my valueble characters transferred.
Oh my god....I don't know how I feel yet. Not good.
I can't see myself using this service. I'm happy that my main and only character is on the alliance. If I did make another character, it would probably stay on that side.
This is going to create so much drama, but the way things were going it was inevitable. I expect this will be a pay-to-switch service, like changing realm, and will come with the ability to change race as well (as the functionality will be there already). I also expect all faction based items/quests/achievements/etc will be lost in the change. I don't think we'll see the ability to change faction without changing character anytime soon, but in another year or three anything could happen.Just note that Blizzard will continue to do whatever they feel will make the *aggregate* of their player base happy. They will happily !@#$ off 5% of the players to satisfy 50%. So expect to keep seeing these sorts of option and whatnot as time progresses. I would be completely unsurprised if say, next year, we get the ability to pay for a class change as well. This is a game for casuals, and will remain a game focused on pleasing the casual base, for as long as the casual base is paying them most of the money. Also, Blizzard likes casual players more than hardcore ones, because casual players tend to spend more money (on services like this) and use fewer server/development resources. A casual player will take much longer to "consume" the content released by blizzard, despite paying the exact same amount per month. A casual player will be online much less than a "hardcore", thus allowing more players to pay the monthly fee without Blizzard having to invest in more servers/hardware/bandwidth. Any basic busines sense will tell you that casuals are the target market.Edit: I will probably use this service, but only to load up a lowbie with heirloom equipment, money, and resources (within defined limits) and send them over to start fresh on the other side, on another server.
I wonder if Blizzard is considering the option to change the amount of gold a character is holding...

And with the new chest pieces for a 20% extra xp increase? Yes please! Some motivation to have a toon on the other faction, while still starting from the beginning without it being tedius. =P
YES! I stopped playing my alliance characters because I rerolled horde. OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG I LOVE THIS.
O M G .....
I think Blizzard's catering too much to their unpleaseable users. There should definitely be a line to cross when giving the people what they want, and this is a big-ass line.
Wonder how much that will make them in transfer charges.Race next. You could kinda do race now, if you can choose the race you switch factions to, then switch back, its essentially a race change.I.E. NElf--->Tauren--->Gnome
As some people have noted, a huge possible downside to this would be a potential for depopulating the Alliance, as everyone switches over to Horde.Of course, this idea is based on a stereotype, so it's entirely possible it won't happen. That said, one way Blizzard could implement it, so that population imbalance doesn't occur is to:Restrict faction transfers to the lower population faction from the higher, and not allow lower population transfers to the higher population faction.Another idea would be:To have players requesting a faction transfer put in a queue (because WoW is all about the queue times :) and only have players actually complete the faction transfer when a player from the opposite faction applies for a faction transfer in the other direction (basically a population swap). The second idea could somewhat easily be subverted by having players create level 1s to transfer from the opposite faction, in order to create the swap. This could be mitigated by requiring the swap to be between characters of similar level (say, within 10 levels of each other) and is already somewhat mitigated by forcing the player attempting said subversion to pay for 2 faction transfers...Just some ideas. My opinions on this idea are somewhat confused. Part of me is interested in being able to have a higher level horde toon to run around with my horde friend(s), the rest of me worries about seeing some of my friends jump faction while others stay, thereby forcing me to choose which group of friends to stick with.I probably won't bother with this option (much in the same way I haven't gotten a haircut on any of my toons). I think I spent a long time pondering which faction (much as I spent time picking my toon's haircut) so I should be happy with my choice.Of course the idea of grabbing some heirlooms(and money) to allow for a faster leveling process with a new opposite faction toon, would be kind of fun.As long as Hogger still pwns lowbie alliance bum, I'll still enjoy this game.
