Wowhead Server Migration Complete
2013/06/18 at 6:06 PM
We had some site downtime today and we wanted to share with everyone why that was--and don't worry, it's good news!
In short, we have just completed migrating servers and getting Wowhead stabilized on its new home. This change will allow us to have better uptime, faster load times, and allow us to create more awesome features in the future.
It will also fix a couple of notorious issues people have been having with our site. Many of you probably remember an issue where pages were not loading correctly. While we fixed it for many people, it was a reoccurring problem for a few regions despite our best efforts. You'll be relieved to hear that this should be fixed by our server migration.
The next few hours are crucial for us so be sure to report any issues you find in the comments here so we can investigate them thoroughly. Moving a site as huge as Wowhead is not without its difficulties, but this will alleviate the server issues we've been having over the past month and bring greater stability to our users in the future. Thanks for your patience, you guys!
Edit: If you are still experiencing issues, please check out
. We've fixed some critical bugs like Russian Wowhead and uploading images not working properly, and have a known list of issues we're still addressing.

Introducing Hearthstone at Wowhead
2013/05/30 at 9:42 AM
Hearthstone's beta is coming this summer and we've got our first peek at the game's cards!
We've added all of the cards and Hearthstone data to Wowhead as
a brand new section
so you guys can browse Hearthstone updates while you're still using Wowhead. We've created filters, tooltips, and other features that you've come to know and love from using Wowhead--including our awesome image search that you've probably seen from our unique
Check out our Hearthstone database now!
We've expanded our
popular Wowhead tooltips
to now cover
! We went with an information-based approach, opting to make our tooltips condensed and full of the card details.
If you've already enabled Wowhead tooltips on your site, you're good to go! Wowhead links to Hearthstone cards will now sport a
Al'akir the Windlord
In addition to showing all the basic information you can view on a card, our tooltips display some additional details like a card's race and class! Here's what you'll find on our tooltips:

Cost, Attack Power, Health
Don't have Wowhead tooltips for your site yet? All you have to do is add this piece of HTML code in the <head> section of your page:

Site Updates: Reputation Guides, Reagents Breakdown, Transmog Filters
2013/05/10 at 1:17 PM
With the constant talk about the 5.3 PTR, we wanted to take a break and let you know about some of the new things going on at Wowhead! We've updated all of our Mists of Pandaria reputation guides, added a number of helpful filters to transmog sets, and implemented a reagents breakdown on profession pages.
Updated Reputation Guides
With a slight lull in PTRs, we've gone ahead and updated another batch of our Mists of Pandaria guides this week, after we updated all
profession guides last weekend
. With the reduction in experience needed to hit 90, and
requirement being removed from
The August Celestials
rep grinds in 5.3, you may just be interested in checking out some reps on your alts!

Profession Reagents Breakdown
Know you want to craft an item, but can't remember the raw materials needed for one part of it? We've added a reagents breakdown on all profession pages. These pages can be accessed via
Spells > Professions
, or clicking on the "
" link on a crafted item's page.
Users can expand/collapse information for all reagents at once.
Expanding the reagents section will bring up a nested list with the amounts of raw materials needed, and links to the raw materials.
We also display the crafting spells needed for various reagents, and how many times you'll have to cast it.
To learn more about crafting one particular recipe item, users can simply toggle it to view one segment of the reagents tree.
Over the past month, we've added numerous filters to our database, such as
We're especially happy with our improvements to the
transmog set section
--as users get more creative in their appearances, we want our tools to get more refined as well!
We've added a Styles section to filters, allowing users to search by looks most commonly associated with Classic World Drops, Dungeons, Events, PvP, Raids, and Quests. You can further break down these filters to search by looks associated with a
Searching by expansion will now bring up sets that were

Battle Pet Tools: New Stat Calculator and Site Enhancements
2013/03/18 at 7:04 PM
Wowhead users love battle pets--just check out January's
for proof--so we've spent some time adding and refining our battle pet tools! Whether you're looking to level up your favorite pet, need to look up a pet tamer's stats, or want the perfect pet team to crush your
Fabled Pandaren Tamer
opponents, our expanded tools should help you out.
Here's a roundup of what we've just launched--we hope you have fun using these tools when finding
Patch 5.2's new pets
Battle Pet Calculator
Our biggest addition is a Battle Pet Calculator, showing a pet's Health, Power, and Speed based on its Breed, Quality, and Level:
: All battle pets useable by players can be leveled up to 25. Untameable pets display their static level.
: All battle pets useable by players can be acquired or upgraded to Rare quality. Some pets, including all wild ones, can be initially found as Poor, Common, or Uncommon quality too. Tamer pets that are epic or legendary are marked accordingly.
: This one is a bit beyond Battle Pets 101, but it can really affect your pet's performance. Pets can come in one of 10 breeds, which inflate your three primary stats in various ways. Many wild pets have the option to come in multiple breeds, so you might end up catching a few pets before you find the Breed that suits your pet's skillset.
We've displayed which breeds each pet can come in, and given each breed its own button with icons and percentages so users can quickly see what type of stat boost each breed offers. To learn more, check out
WarcraftPets' Guide to Pet Breeds and Breed IDs
The calculator is found at the top of each Battle Pet's NPC page.
Improved Battle Pet Listview
Users liked how we displayed pets in both a gallery and traditional form, so we added some details to enhance your search results:
From both listviews, you can now see a breakdown of a pet's level 25 stats, as well as all of their abilities. We've added untameable trainer pets to results and you can now reference their static stats and level.
We've also marked which pets are non-combat companions, untameable trainer pets, and elite pets.
We've further refined the Gallery's display: mousing over a pet will now bring up enhanced information, including the levels for all pet abilities and what slot they can be placed in.
Using the format of our
page for reference, we've updated
to contain many more filters.
You can filter by Mechanics such as
, as well as choosing from a variety of other filters including Buffs, Debuffs, Combat Order, Weather Effects, and bonus-granting abilities.
We've also added some general filters for things like Pet Type, Ability Families, and Weather Effects.
Based on user feedback, we've added some additional stat columns to the abilities section on all battle pet pages: Levels (different pets can learn the same ability at different levels), Accuracy, Duration (how many turns an ability lasts for), Cooldown (how many turns must pass before an ability can be used again), Base Damage, and Base Healing.
We've also cleaned up ability search results and have removed Aura versions of abilities from the default display to make things less confusing for our users.

New Year's Eve in Azeroth, Wowhead's 2012 Year In Review
2012/12/31 at 11:08 AM
It's time once again for Azeroth to celebrate New Year's Eve with a nice
Filled Festive Mug
and fireworks--catch them at the top of the hour in major cities and Booty Bay, but
not to drunkenly PvP in Booty Bay since the guards are asleep.
Don't forget to /dance back at the Revelers to get
Celebrate Good Times!
, which increases all stats by 10% for 30 minutes. Drinking
Filled Festive Mug
also gives you a neat slowfall effect--
Whether you're relaxing in-game or heading out to celebrate, have a Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! Join the celebrations starting at 6:00 a.m. realm time, December 31, and check out the fireworks in the skies above the cities every hour on the hour. Sample the exotic brews and libations carted in from around the world of Azeroth, and /dance your way into the new year as a part of the celebration. For those looking to avoid trouble—or get into it—you may want to steer clear of—or head toward—Booty Bay as the guards there appear to be spending more time enjoying themselves than enforcing town rules (at least into the morning hours).
Wowhead's 2012 Year in Review
It's hard to believe that for most of 2012, we were all farming Dragon Soul instead of exploring Pandaria. However, even when things seemed routine in game, the Wowhead staff stayed busy with new features, fixes, and guides. While we won't bore you with all the bug fixes and custom data tweaks, here's a list of the site's most interesting new features, guides, and contests in the past year! You can check out the
section for a more detailed list of additions.

5.1 Site Features: New Tooltips and Item Upgrades
2012/11/30 at 5:25 PM
Over this past week, the Wowhead team has implemented new site tools reflecting 5.1 changes: many Item Upgrade tools and redesigned tooltips!
Upgrading an item via currency is a unique feature added in 5.1 in which players can
permanently upgrade all ilvl 458+ gear by 8 ilvls
. It's not really obvious to calculate how an item will scale up, so we designed a bunch of tools to help you out!
Item Comparison Tool
now supports Item Upgrades. An "Upgrade" option has been added to the item menu (click on the icon to access), which will automatically adjust the tooltip and all the stats. Go to
to get started!
Search results now display an "Upgrades" column between "Req." and "Side." This column displays icons if the item can be upgraded, and mousing over an icon shows an upgraded version for easy reference. There is also a new search filter:
Can Be Upgraded
Item Upgrades are now available in XML: Just add &upgd=X after &xml, where X is 1 or 2.
Toggle options on all item pages display an approximation of the upgraded stats, including trinket procs, which aren't displayed in the in-game UI. Quick Facts displays the currency cost for all upgrades.
We added an option to our advanced tooltip code to display upgraded items instead of the basic version. Adding "upgd=" and specifying the upgrade amount (1 or 2) will display the new version. As an example,
[Perculia's Peculiar Signet]
is generated from: <a href="
Blizzard extensively redesigned their in-game tooltips for 5.1. While the new layout takes some getting used to, the information is presented in a more organized fashion. We've remodeled Wowhead's tooltips to match Blizzard's new layout.
The ilvl and upgrade level of an item is now shown in yellow near the top.
All secondary stats are displayed in green as "+" rather than "Equip: Increases your ." This information is also higher on the tooltip.
Based on user feedback earlier this month, we also enhanced our tooltips to display some additional information. While nothing beats reading Wowhead comments and browsing screenshots, sometimes it's helpful to see little things like at what level you learn a revised ability in MoP. We've tried to keep the tooltips as tidy as possible and relay the most essential information, since having a huge tooltip cover the article you're reading isn't fun.
Achievements: Number of points rewarded, faction-specific, account-wide progress
Abilities: Class, required level, required specialization, new layout highlighting ability changes per spec, race.
Items: Account-wide mounts, required ilvl for gems, stackable amounts, drop location, drop percentage.
Battle Pets and Daily Quests now marked as such on top right.
The tooltip code for external sites was also updated to include
more customization options
for icons, link colors, and link names.

News Round Up: 5.1 Reputation Changes, "Modified By" Ability Tab
2012/11/16 at 11:44 AM
Today's news round up summarizes the reputation changes coming in 5.1, highlights Wowhead's recently improved "Modified By" tab, and features more
Battle.net World Championship coverage
If you're ever wondered what it's like to make art for Blizzard, you should also check out WoW Insider's interview with
, one of the winners of Blizzard's first Student Art Ccontest. The winners got to spend several months interning at Blizzard and even put some finishing touches on Mists of Pandaria!
5.1 Reputation Changes
While the reputation grinds in Mists of Pandaria try some innovative things like removing reputation from tabards in dungeons, many players were not looking forward to repeating the grind on their alts.
In 5.1, each faction now has a special commendation that can be purchased at Revered from quartermasters which unlocks a 100% bonus reputation gain for all characters on the account.
Blizzard confirmed that these commendations
work for your characters on the opposite faction as well
, and the primary character at Revered also earns double reputation as they work towards Exalted. Initially, one character simply hitting Revered would trigger this bonus reputation gain, but Blizzard felt
this wasn't obvious enough
, so they added in items. So far only Mists of Pandaria reputations are affected by this system, and no word if gaining Friendship with Tiller NPCs will be affected by this.
Relaunching Wowhead's "Modified By" Tab
With the talent trees removed, ability ranks gone, and numerous spells being heavily changed in Mists of Pandaria, it was time for us to completely redo the
tab on ability pages manually from scratch. We've relaunched this feature this week covering what talents, specializations, class abilities, glyphs, and MoP set bonuses modify a particular player spell. Whether you're curious if a certain talent enhances important spells in your rotation, find an in-game description vague, or aren't sure how a familiar-sounding ability has changed for your dusty alt, this feature should help you out.

page for a full list of monthly additions!

New Site Features: Battle Pets Map and Visual Pet Database
2012/09/24 at 5:06 PM
The entire Wowhead team has been hard at work updating our database to the MoP version of data so be sure to check it out! We have
a battle pet database
a new world map
, and every section of the database updated to Mists of Pandaria's latest. We'll continue to be updating the site throughout the week as well.
The addition of pet battles is one of the biggest features Blizzard's bringing with Mists of Pandaria and it's the one we worked especially hard on. Here are the two features we've added to make your pet collecting a lot smoother:
A visual pet battle database for every pet out there
Search for detailed pets with a variety of filters: source, location, and more
See every pet's detailed stats and information
Search by images or plain text to find the perfect pet
A complete world map showing every pet location
Find pets by zone to add to your collection
See detailed information by clicking pet icons
Find trainers and battle pet related NPCs on the same map
As always, good luck getting to 90! We hope you enjoy the new features!

Introducing Wowhead News 2.0
2012/06/07 at 6:56 PM
Almost exactly a year ago we launched Wowhead News. Its intention was to make the blogging our content team did more visible and it certainly did exactly that.
However, a lot of people had problems with the layout. It wasn't styled like Wowhead, it wasn't practical in design, and its separate domain gave everyone a headache--especially the part where it would log people out frequently and make commenting difficult.
So a while ago, when we were talking about what features we'd like to do for our community, I threw out the idea that I'd eventually like to see Wowhead News redone in a style more becoming of Wowhead. As it turns out, so did the rest of the Wowhead team!
Today I'm proud to reveal the fruit of our labor:
Wowhead News 2.0
, a version that truly returns to its roots. We hope you like it--be sure to check out the sidebar as well for some awesome new features, including a featured guide box as well as the most popular addons from
Please report any issues or suggestions right here in the comments and we'll stay on it for the remainder of this week and next.
