New Site Feature: Tracking Collections on Wowhead
2013/12/13 at 11:19 AM
A few weeks ago, we released a new feature letting users track
their quest progress
on database pages and search results. You loved it and asked for more, so we expanded the tool to track even more things!
In addition to quests, you can now track a character's collected
Just pick a character and save it on Wowhead via the
, click on the green resync icon next to their name to make sure it's completely updated, and click on the Red Heart/Pin option to get started. When you visit pages or get a list of results, you'll now see your collection progress as well as modified tooltips showing what you've completed or still need to collect.
You can also see everything at once on your character's Profiler page. There are tabs for many collection categories and you can sort different categories by Complete, In Progress, and Incomplete. This also shows you basic information about things you still want to collect, like their source.
We've recently added a feature to hide things you may never be interested in collecting, like all Collector's Edition pets. Simply click on the new
option at the top right and select the types of things you want to hide. These will automatically be moved from Complete/Incomplete results to a new Not Counted section.
In addition, players can click on checkboxes to the left of an item's name in a Profiler list and then click on the "Exclude" button to ignore, if it doesn't fall into any of the above categories.

New Site Features: Quest Tracking, New Sounds and Music, Guide Improvements
2013/11/27 at 11:28 AM
We've got another batch of new site features that we're excited to share with you before the holiday weekend! To check out everything our team has been working on, visit the
Warcraft Sounds and Music
Really like a zone's music? Want to brush up on what a boss' deadly ability sounds like? We've added spell sounds and zone music to Wowhead pages!
Spell pages with associated sounds include:
Boss Emote Anachronos 03
Music tied to items:
You can also visit a zone's page now, like
, to hear all the music associated with it.
Quest Tracking Improvements
We've added a new way for players to see if they've completed certain quests or not. You can look up a character's progress on quest pages now!
All you have to do is import a
via the Profiler, and then go to you
and click on the heart icon to the left of one of your profiles to "pin" it.
If you visit any quest page, or browse a bunch of quests in search results, you'll see if you've completed quests for that pinned character in the
column for search results, or under
on individual pages. Tooltips will even show which character has completed a quest!
You can track quests for multiple characters at once too--just select several characters from your Profiles tab.
A lot of Wowhead users have created awesome guides, and we've improved our guide section to showcase them better:
You can see popular Wowhead and user-created guides on relevant database pages--like the
Pilgrim's Bounty guide
now shows up on recipe and food pages with a special graphic.
main guides page
has a new landing page, featuring guide categories and recent guides.
We've added several guide categories--
Featured guides with images now appear at the top of search results, and we are always evaluating and adding guides to this list.
Feel free to submit one!
We've improved how guides are styled so they look more polished like Wowhead News, and added a sidebar showing similar guides, recent guides, popular guides, and other guides by an author. If you like the old layout, you can click on an arrow to hide the sidebar as well.

Hearthhead Front Page, Streams, Guides
got upgraded from Basic to Golden with a new layout this weekend. All of our tools are now easily accessible from the front page, as well as a list of recent forum topics and Hearthstone blue posts. We've even added a new feature--

where you can specify the number of cards of a certain quality, set, and type.
We've also added some things to player guides:

Pet battles have been one of the hit features of Mists of Pandaria, and the Wowhead team has enjoyed developing new pet features over the expansion--a

We've also added
Battle Pet Calculator
buttons on trainer and collectible pet pages--clicking on the button opens up a new calculator with the specific pet.
of the battle pet section from Blizzard's own character profiles, Wowhead's battle pet team calculator will still provide an easy way to look up in-game teams. Just enter in a region, realm, and character name, and click load!
Selecting a Battle.net character also gives you the option to build future pet teams only using that character's collected set of pets. When adding a pet to a team, you'll be prompted to select between all collectible pets or a character's unique set of pets.
Comparing Pet Teams
Simply click on the "Compare" button to switch to a comparison view. You can compare your team to other player teams, custom teams, most battle pet trainer teams, and elite pets. When 5.4 hits, you'll be able to see how your team holds up against the
At the bottom of the page, we've provided a breakdown of your selected pets and abilities:
: Types of attacks your pets are vulnerable to.
: Types of attacks your pets take less damage from.
: Pet types your team's abilities are weak against.
: Pet types your team's abilities are strong against.
: Abilities with healing components. Pure healing abilities are marked by a red heart.
: Abilities that apply auras, buffs, and debuffs. Mousing over icons displays the ability as well as the aura.
: Abilities that apply states which other abilities can exploit (Chilled, Bleeding, Poisoned, etc).
: Abilities that apply weather effects or benefit from them.
When comparing two teams, the pet summary will update to show what pets specifically are affected by your Strong and Weak abilities. We've also greyed out abilities that aren't affected by the enemy team, to highlight important abilities better.
We're open to adding additional details in the summary section, so if you have any suggestions, let us know.

Site Updates: Image Search Results, Loot Specialization Filters, and More
2013/08/01 at 11:12 AM
With all the recent 5.4 PTR coverage, it's a good time to step back and highlight some of the cool projects and database improvements our dev team has been working on. We've added image galleries to our search results, some new loot specialization tools, and more!
Image Gallery: Search Results and "Same Model As" Tab
We've added image search results, generated by our 3D Modelviewer, for all armor and weapons! To view the image results, simply click on the
tab next to the default
option. Clicking on an image will open up our 3D modelviewer, and clicking on the name will take you to the item's page.
We've also turned the
Same Model As
tab on all armor and weapon pages into an image gallery as well. With images for all items, players can easily spot what armor not only has a matching style, but also identical colors--a popular site request among our transmog users.
Loot Specialization Filters
Patch 5.3 introduced the
system, which allowed players to more easily collect off-spec loot. By pre-selecting a loot specialization, all items acquired from questing, Bonus Rolls, LFR, and Heroic Scenarios would be suitable for that spec--regardless of what spec the player currently is.
Whether you need to know loot specialization details for planning out bonus rolls or knowing what spec has a quest reward that's a unique transmog model, we've added some tools to Wowhead to help you out.
Loot Specialization details have been added to raid boss pages. We've added a row of class buttons on top of each boss' loot table--click on a particular class to see spec details in the
column. You can clear results by clicking on the
Item pages affected by loot specialization now display spec icons underneath their tooltips.
New item filters: going to "
Requires Loot Specialization...
" under General will let you filter loot by spec or by class.
Battle Pet Breeds
We've made some adjustments to our battle pet search results so players can find pets with specific stats and breeds more easily.
Search results for battle pets now display health, power, and speed stats for specific breeds.
You can specify what breed you'd like to see in results with our
new Breed filters
In search results, if a pet has multiple breeds, there will be a dotted line underneath the displayed Breed information. Clicking on that brings up a simple list of the other Breed options, and selecting a different breed will modify the pet's stats accordingly.
And as a refresher course on breeds: they're are simply another way Blizzard creates variance with their battle pets. There are ten possible Breeds--of which each pet is assigned only a few. These breeds affect a pet's stats in unique ways, which we display on our battle pet pages with percentages.
Spell Data Refinements
We're also continuing to refine how our spell data is displayed:
In Patch 5.4, in-game trinket tooltips will show proc per minute information. We've updated our tooltips accordingly to display proc per minute and ICD details--but due to how Blizzard has handled the data, you'll have to visit
our PTR domain
for this information until Patch 5.4 goes live.
section on each
, we've added information on a spell's flags--useful when theorycrafting. Clicking on each flag will open up a list of spells that share that particular flag as well.
Spell pages now display a Modifies tab, in addition to Modifies By. Useful for deciphering vague tooltips and figuring out what abilities are affected by set bonuses, glyphs, masteries, class abilities, legendary procs, and more!

Wowhead Server Migration Complete
2013/06/18 at 6:06 PM
We had some site downtime today and we wanted to share with everyone why that was--and don't worry, it's good news!
In short, we have just completed migrating servers and getting Wowhead stabilized on its new home. This change will allow us to have better uptime, faster load times, and allow us to create more awesome features in the future.
It will also fix a couple of notorious issues people have been having with our site. Many of you probably remember an issue where pages were not loading correctly. While we fixed it for many people, it was a reoccurring problem for a few regions despite our best efforts. You'll be relieved to hear that this should be fixed by our server migration.
The next few hours are crucial for us so be sure to report any issues you find in the comments here so we can investigate them thoroughly. Moving a site as huge as Wowhead is not without its difficulties, but this will alleviate the server issues we've been having over the past month and bring greater stability to our users in the future. Thanks for your patience, you guys!
Edit: If you are still experiencing issues, please check out
. We've fixed some critical bugs like Russian Wowhead and uploading images not working properly, and have a known list of issues we're still addressing.

Site Updates: Reputation Guides, Reagents Breakdown, Transmog Filters
2013/05/10 at 1:17 PM
With the constant talk about the 5.3 PTR, we wanted to take a break and let you know about some of the new things going on at Wowhead! We've updated all of our Mists of Pandaria reputation guides, added a number of helpful filters to transmog sets, and implemented a reagents breakdown on profession pages.
Updated Reputation Guides

Profession Reagents Breakdown
Know you want to craft an item, but can't remember the raw materials needed for one part of it? We've added a reagents breakdown on all profession pages. These pages can be accessed via
Spells > Professions
, or clicking on the "
" link on a crafted item's page.
Users can expand/collapse information for all reagents at once.
Expanding the reagents section will bring up a nested list with the amounts of raw materials needed, and links to the raw materials.
We also display the crafting spells needed for various reagents, and how many times you'll have to cast it.
To learn more about crafting one particular recipe item, users can simply toggle it to view one segment of the reagents tree.
Over the past month, we've added numerous filters to our database, such as
We're especially happy with our improvements to the
transmog set section
--as users get more creative in their appearances, we want our tools to get more refined as well!
We've added a Styles section to filters, allowing users to search by looks most commonly associated with Classic World Drops, Dungeons, Events, PvP, Raids, and Quests. You can further break down these filters to search by looks associated with a

Battle Pet Tools: New Stat Calculator and Site Enhancements
2013/03/18 at 7:04 PM
Wowhead users love battle pets--just check out January's
for proof--so we've spent some time adding and refining our battle pet tools! Whether you're looking to level up your favorite pet, need to look up a pet tamer's stats, or want the perfect pet team to crush your
Fabled Pandaren Tamer
opponents, our expanded tools should help you out.
Here's a roundup of what we've just launched--we hope you have fun using these tools when finding
Patch 5.2's new pets
Battle Pet Calculator
Our biggest addition is a Battle Pet Calculator, showing a pet's Health, Power, and Speed based on its Breed, Quality, and Level:
: All battle pets useable by players can be leveled up to 25. Untameable pets display their static level.
: All battle pets useable by players can be acquired or upgraded to Rare quality. Some pets, including all wild ones, can be initially found as Poor, Common, or Uncommon quality too. Tamer pets that are epic or legendary are marked accordingly.
: This one is a bit beyond Battle Pets 101, but it can really affect your pet's performance. Pets can come in one of 10 breeds, which inflate your three primary stats in various ways. Many wild pets have the option to come in multiple breeds, so you might end up catching a few pets before you find the Breed that suits your pet's skillset.
We've displayed which breeds each pet can come in, and given each breed its own button with icons and percentages so users can quickly see what type of stat boost each breed offers. To learn more, check out
WarcraftPets' Guide to Pet Breeds and Breed IDs
The calculator is found at the top of each Battle Pet's NPC page.
Improved Battle Pet Listview
Users liked how we displayed pets in both a gallery and traditional form, so we added some details to enhance your search results:
From both listviews, you can now see a breakdown of a pet's level 25 stats, as well as all of their abilities. We've added untameable trainer pets to results and you can now reference their static stats and level.
We've also marked which pets are non-combat companions, untameable trainer pets, and elite pets.
We've further refined the Gallery's display: mousing over a pet will now bring up enhanced information, including the levels for all pet abilities and what slot they can be placed in.
Using the format of our
page for reference, we've updated
to contain many more filters.
You can filter by Mechanics such as
, as well as choosing from a variety of other filters including Buffs, Debuffs, Combat Order, Weather Effects, and bonus-granting abilities.
We've also added some general filters for things like Pet Type, Ability Families, and Weather Effects.
Based on user feedback, we've added some additional stat columns to the abilities section on all battle pet pages: Levels (different pets can learn the same ability at different levels), Accuracy, Duration (how many turns an ability lasts for), Cooldown (how many turns must pass before an ability can be used again), Base Damage, and Base Healing.
We've also cleaned up ability search results and have removed Aura versions of abilities from the default display to make things less confusing for our users.
