News Roundup: Latest Hotfixes, PVP Season Transition Compensation
2011/07/08 at 9:46 PM
Today brings a new batch of 4.2 hotfixes, including a number of changes and fixes to some Firelands encounters, and important details on Blizzard's planned action regarding the recent Season 9 and 10 PVP item mess. We reported on this "disaster" in
, where Blizzard admitted fault in miscommunication of new PVP item availability, resulting in many players spending their saved Honor points on now-outdated gear. Well, affected players can rejoice because Blizzard plan on making it up to you with some free Honor!
Oh, and no 4.3 details just yet. ;)
Latest 4.2 Hotfixes (7/8)
Combat pets should no longer aggro creatures while the player is mounted.
Dungeons & Raids
Death knight Bloodworms are no longer removing stacks of Torment when they explode to heal other players.
Molten Elementals are no longer able to critically hit players.
The responsiveness of the Molten Power ability has been increased on Heroic difficulty.
Multiple volcanoes casting Eruption will now create separate stacks. Crushing a volcano will cause its stacks of Eruption to fade shortly after.
Ranged pets can no longer damage Rhyolith’s legs without beginning the encounter.
The Ancient Lava Dweller can no longer be looted by engineers with the Loot-A-Rang.
Unbound Pyrelords are no longer casting Ignite Elemental on the same target. All Unbound Smoldering Elementals should now be changed to Unbound Blazing Elementals by the time the pyrelord dies.
The Unbreakable Shell buff present on Unbound Smoldering Elementals now reduces damage received by 50%, down from 90%.
Unbound Smoldering Elementals are now correctly resetting and are no longer retaining Blazing Flame when they leave combat.
Riplimb’s Lost Collar seemed to truly be lost. This item now properly has a chance to drop from select creatures.
Several Ruthless Gladiator’s items have had their Stamina values increased to more appropriate levels.
Season Transition Compensation
We wanted to let everyone know that we’re working to address the miscommunication that occurred regarding the introduction of new item level 371 PvP gear, and share our current plans.
For background, many players spent their Honor Points on item level 365 gear once Season 9 ended only to find that more powerful item level 371 gear was available when season 10 started. We should have communicated ahead of time that this was going to be the case, and we apologize for the mistake.
We’ve been working over the past few days to evaluate and determine the best course of action to offer players some kind of compensation for those who were caught off guard by the new gear. The plan we’ve found to be achievable within an acceptable amount of time is to provide players who were affected with 4000 Honor Points. This extra Honor would function similarly to the currency down-conversion in that it would stack over the cap, but you would not be able to earn more until you spent under the 4000 cap.
The process of determining who was affected is certainly the most difficult task of this issue, and the entire process of figuring out who should receive the Honor or not and then delivering it isn’t anything less than a giant undertaking. We’re still evaluating many of the processes that will be required to make this happen. Although we’re fairly confident we can pull it off, there is still a chance it may not be possible. Due to other service related work the soonest we would be able to distribute this Honor is the 7/19 Tuesday maintenance. More complicated solutions we discussed could take months to implement, but we felt getting something to those affected as quickly as possible was more important.
Although some of this is still uncertain we felt it best to let people know as far in advance as possible to allow for adequate planning. We’ll be able to provide more information and specifics on how this process will be carried out, and the requirements to receive the 4000 Honor, next week.
Again, we apologize for any inconvenience caused by our miscommunication. We greatly appreciate those who took the time to give us constructive feedback on the matter.
When Do We Get Patch 4.3?
When will patch 4.3 come out? What will it be about?
I ask because 4.2 is released a little over 1 week and top tier guilds have cleared normal firelands and 5/7 in heroic mode..
Last time I checked, 50 people in the whole world are working on Heroic Ragnaros. You're good. We'll have PLENTY of information on patch 4.3 in due time. ;)

PvP Season 10 Begins
PvP Season 10 has officially begun, and players can once again take to the Arenas and Rated Battlegrounds to compete for the new Ruthless Gladiator PvP sets!
All Team Ratings and Personal Ratings have been reset, and any Conquest Points from Season 9 have been converted to Honor Points. Any Honor Points above the cap were converted into gold at a rate of 35 silver per point. Matchmaking Ratings, however, will be carried over into Season 10.
Another important event that coincides with the start of Season 10 is the distribution of rewards from the previous season. Players who were in the top teams from each battlegroup at the end of season 9 should be receiving their end-of-season rewards approximately one week after the end of the last season. These include Arena-specific titles until the end of this new season and, for players who have earned the rank of gladiator, the Vicious Gladiator’s Twilight Drake. It's very important for players who feel that they may be eligible for Arena titles and/or the Vicious Gladiator’s Twilight Drake to refrain from transferring their characters to another realm or faction until all rewards have been received.
If you have any further questions about Arena and Rated Battleground rewards, please read the FAQ.

Arena and Rated Battlegrounds Rewards FAQ
Below, you can find answers to a plethora of questions about the Arena. This information contains facts that can be helpful for seasoned Arena veterans as well as people that are perhaps new to the sands:
How can I get the Gladiator title?
You need to be in top 0.5% of the total active teams in either the 3v3 or 5v5 bracket at the end of an Arena season.
When does the season end?
Official announcements are made to provide a warning of at least two weeks before the end of a season. These announcements for European realms are posted in the Arena and Rated Battlegrounds forum here:
What rewards are given for Rated Battlegrounds?
The top 0.5% of players on the Rated Battleground ladder will receive an achievement that grants a permanent "Hero of the Horde" or "Hero of the Alliance" title.
When can I purchase the PvP weapons?
Certain PvP weapons require that a player meet a minimum requirement before becoming available for purchase. Vicious Gladiator’s one-handed or two-handed weapons require that the player first accumulate 7250 total Honor Points, while Ruthless Gladiator’s one-handed or two-handed weapons require that the player first accumulate 7800 total Conquest Points. Total accumulated Honor and Conquest Points are tracked over the course of the season.
What rewards are given out when an Arena season ends?
The end of season rewards include the titles ‘Challenger’ for the top 10% to 35% of active teams in the battlegroup, 'Rival' for the top 3% to 10% of active teams in the battlegroup, 'Duelist' for the top 0.5% to 3% of active teams in the battlegroup, and 'Gladiator' for the top 0.5% of active teams in the battlegroup. Players who earn the 'Gladiator' title also receive a special permanent mount to signify their accomplishments in the Arena.
I was in a top team last season, where’s my reward?
Rewards from the previous season are awarded shortly after the start of the new season.
What Personal Rating (PR) must I have to qualify for the end-of-season rewards?
There is no specific personal rating amount required, but you need to be within 100 personal rating of the team rating.
What percentage of games must I play on my team to qualify for the end-of-season rewards?
You need to have played in at least 20% of the games that your team has competed in.
How many games do I need to play to qualify for the end of season rewards?
You need to have played in at least 20 games on your team.
What is an "inactive" team?
A team is "inactive" if the team has not played at least 20 games, there is no one in the team with 20%+ games played, or no one within 100 Personal Rating. Inactivity status has nothing to do with how often you play. Any inactive team is disqualified from the end of the season rewards.
Do I need to play in the last week to be able to get Gladiator?
No, you don't have to play in the last week.
If I transfer to another realm after the season ends but before I get my title and drake will they still get to me?
No. You must wait for titles/drakes to be distributed and then transfer afterward.
How do players get the Vicious Gladiator title?
At the end of each season, the #-1 ranked teams from the 3v3/5v5 brackets in each battlegroup get the title of that Arena season. For season 9 it is Vicious Gladiator and for season 10 it will be Ruthless Gladiator. If multiple teams are tied for the top spot, they will all get this title.
Do I get to keep my title forever?
The Challenger, Rival, Duelist and Gladiator titles are redistributed at the end of each season based on your team’s performance. So for example, if you get a Gladiator title at the end of season 9, when season 10 ends you will get a new title based on your performance specifically for season 10. The only title that is permanent is the one awarded for the #1-ranked teams each season.
Lack of Spirit Gear
I have yet to here any explanation regarding the lack of cloth spirit gear for us priests, when every other armor type has spirit pieces that drop in Firelands. My main concern is we are being forgotten. Its going to take longer to gear a priest than any other healer, and then the issues with heroic mode for those who do them. There are slots that don't even have heroic upgrade. Holy priests depend on spirit for our regen! What was the theory behind all this and to leave us priests out?
Stat balance on gear should be looked at via much more than just boss loot tables. We consider reputation gear, tailor gear, Valor gear and the tier sets when examining what's available to you. If you wish, you can have Spirit on every slot but your belt (which can still be reforged). The priest tier set has Spirit on all 5 slots.
Having said that, the mindset that only cloth with spirit is priest healer gear (and cloth with no spirit is never priest healer gear) is a mindset to be resisted. If that is allowed to set in, then all the fun of looking at a potential new piece of gear and deciding for yourself whether it is an upgrade for you is removed entirely.
Along those lines, something keep in mind is that there is more to improving the healing you do in cloth than simply stacking spirit. As you increase spell power, haste, and crit, and your tank increases health, armor and avoidance, boss damage negates less of your mana in the first place.
Lava Bolt Crossbow
Sounds Like a Gun
This is a known issue for which we have a fix. The crossbow shouldn't sound like a gun. 'Cause that'd be silly.
Updating sound files requires a client-side patch, so unfortunately this cannot be addressed via a hotfix.

. Players on the battlefields and arenas of World of Warcraft have proven their mettle in glorious combat, and are ready for new challenges and more powerful rewards. Here’s a look at the gear that the most accomplished PvP competitors will be sporting in Season 10.
Dungeon Journal Preview
In patch 4.2, Rage of the Firelands, we'll be introducing the Dungeon Journal, a new system that players can use to learn more about specific dungeons, the bosses within those dungeons, their abilities, and the rewards they offer.
While in a dungeon, hitting "M" (the default key for Map) will open the Dungeon Journal. A new button will also be available in the navigation tray, so that the Dungeon Journal can be accessed from anywhere in-game. There won’t be any gating or limitations placed on what content a player can see in the Dungeon Journal. All boss/dungeon/raid information will be available to all players regardless of level, gear, or content experience. The dungeon/raid map will display each boss in their respective locations, marked by unique icons.
Players can access boss information by clicking on boss icons on the map, or by clicking on the boss’s name in the associated tab of the dungeon/raid map page. General loot information for the dungeon/raid can also be accessed from the dungeon/raid main page by clicking on the Loot tab. This will show all loot dropped (from bosses and trash) in the instance, of a certain quality.
Boss abilities will be available via the boss’s page, either by clicking on the map or by going through the Dungeon tab. The Dungeon tab on the boss’s page will list out all major spells, abilities, and phases for that encounter.
Players will be able to glean useful insight in to the mechanics of boss encounters by first reading the Dungeon Journal. Our goal is to give a solid foundation for taking on the boss, a general sense of how the encounter will play out, and some context to the abilities, without taking the place of creating independent strategies.
In patch 4.2, you'll be able to use the Dungeon Journal to help conquer every dungeon and raid that was introduced with World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, including those in Firelands. We want the Dungeon Journal to include as many dungeons, bosses, and encounters as possible, and we hope to add more in the future. Have fun storming the castle!
Holy Word: Sanctuary
We think Holy Word: Sanctuary is fine as-is taking all of the variables into account. It is isn’t intended to directly compete with Healing Rain or even Efflorescence, and if we decided that it needed to be, we’d have to nerf Holy priest AE healing in other ways, such as Circle of Healing or Prayer of Healing. If you are casting a heal every single GCD, then there may not be many times you would want to use Sanctuary over, say, Prayer of Healing. But you probably aren’t casting every single GCD. Even on heroic raid encounters there are often periods of lower damage, and if you're blowing big heals then when you don’t need to, you’re going to run out of mana. But Sanctuary is the kind of thing you can cast during periods of low damage in preparation for predictable high damage in the near future, at which point it can be ticking away while you also cast other AE heals. Some pretty salient points here. We compare the entire class packages when evaluating and making changes. Saying spell X costs more mana than spell Y is just a recipe for X and Y being the same spell. It's probably also fair that healing priests still have a few too many healing tools, and finding niches for things like Holy Nova continue to be issues without great solutions. Also, saying that Sanctuary is there to prepare for high-damage phases is just not a great usage of the spell. The mana tradeoff is just too harsh for such a pathetically weak spell.
I was going to go into a lot of other uses for it, throwing it out for clump-ups and getting in some regen time when possible, obviously for any localized group damage where you're going to get the duration. I probably should have just cut the example part.

Arena Passes for 2011 Now Open
2011/05/04 at 12:55 PM
It's that time of the year again--Blizzard has opened registration for the arena tournament realms where players compete for a chance to win exclusive prizes, including
Murkimus' Little Spear
and the elusive Vanquisher title. The title is worth getting for the sheer number of questions you'll get, we promise; for some reason, people always seem to think it's a bug with Twilight Vanquisher not displaying properly.
So are you competing this year seriously? Are you facerolling for that pet you've always wanted (he is pretty cute)? Or maybe you've already conquered past years and are passing this time? Let us know in the comments!
Oh and if you're just interested in the pet, it's 50 rated games to qualify by the end of the online qualifier.
Registration for the 2011 World of Warcraft
is now open. Remember, this year all participants in the Arena Pass have a chance to earn the exclusive Armored Murloc pet as well as the exclusive "Vanquisher" title, so get your team together and be ready for fierce competition.
For more information on the 2011 World of Warcraft Arena Pass, take a look at

In addition, a special

has been set up on the World of Warcraft website for Arena Pass discussions.
