Frostbitten: Guide to All Rares, Part 2
2012/03/10 at 11:03 AM
We covered a number of rare spawns in
Beyond Bloody Rare: A Guide to Rares
last year, but we found even more fun ones we wanted to share with you!
While some rares drop a random assortment of greens, a fair amount have specific loot associated with them--some for transmog, some just for status or bank alts. Rares have a ton of personality with their unique models and names, usually after pop-culture references, so it's fun when their loot has some humor as well. We scanned all the rares in the database to see which ones had anything notable!
In this guide, we've provided mouseover images of the rares, maps, and links to any unique loot drops.
In the previous guide, we covered: rares for achievements, hunter tames, notably-named ones from classic instances and zones, and Cataclysm rares.
A note on droprates: many of these mobs had their levels and loot tables adjusted in Cataclysm. Drops that were nearly guaranteed from mobs are now extremely rare. If the loot's been rescaled for Cataclysm though to match a mob's new level, chances are it still exists in game--as several users have reported. If an item's level doesn't match a mob's l
Mists of Pandaria Buff and Debuff Design
2012/03/08 at 8:06 PM
We recently released an update to the
Mists of Pandaria talent tree
. Since the expansion is still in development, these updates represent a snapshot of where we are at any given moment and not a final design where we step back and say “Ladies and gentlemen, we have achieved perfection. Let us not change a thing.” If you’ve been playing the game for a while, you’ve probably realized by now that we never think we’ll hit perfection, and we probably never will.
One design that we haven’t focused on much yet is the plan for various group buffs and debuffs. Some specs have their buffs in place and some do not. Rather than trying to describe each omission, we thought we’d just dump the whole design on you here. As with the rest of the expansion’s systems, we’re not even in beta yet, so there’s plenty of time for things to change.
First, some underlying design goals, so you might understand where we’re coming from. Our main goals for group buffs are:
Make you feel more powerful when grouped with other players.
Cataclysm Post Mortem -- Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street
2012/03/07 at 11:16 AM
As part of our World of Warcraft: Cataclysm post mortem series, we sat down with World of Warcraft Lead Systems Designer Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street to talk about his thoughts on World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.
Q. What were your main goals going into Cataclysm?
A: Westfall was a seven-year-old zone with seven-year-old trees and seven-year-old quests. It naturally felt old. It felt tired for players going back to level up an alt, and it wasn’t inspiring for new players coming to the game. We just felt like it was time to give all of those old 1-60 zones some attention again. Beyond that though, we wanted to update the classes at low level as well. The spell flow, by which we mean the level you get certain spells, just hadn’t aged well. You would get some very group-focused buffs at low level and some powerful leveling tools at high level, which would have made more sense reversed. There were some specs that just weren’t functional at low level before because they lacke
Scroll of Resurrection Revamped: Free Level 80 and New Mounts
2012/03/06 at 6:24 PM
When those spectral mounts made the rounds a couple of months ago, we all wondered when they'd show up. It turns out they're for Scroll of Resurrection's revamp!
Players who revive another person's previously inactive account will receive a spectral mount based on their faction. Meanwhile, the player who accepts a Scroll will get an even sweeter deal:
A single character boosted to 80
A free character move and faction change
Seven days of free game time
And last, but not least, a free upgrade to Cataclysm
This is pretty big
, and I imagine many of you have accounts of your own you'll want to resurrect--good thing you can!
As long as an account has been inactive since before March 4th, 2012 you're eligible to be brought back into Azeroth for these goodies
We have our own
Scroll of Resurrection request thread
here at Wowhead.
This system is now live
The Scroll of Resurrection is currently on cooldown, but will be resurrected soon.

News Round Up: Stat Changes and Scroll of Resurrection
2012/03/06 at 4:56 PM
With the recent
on Dungeons and Raids, as well as the blog on
, there's been a lot of discussion on all the changes--the blue responses today cover a lot of controversial decisions on these topics.
But on to the really exciting news: it looks like there's a new Scroll of Resurrection program! It was accessible on live servers earlier today (via your Real ID list), but looks to be down for maintenance now. It's a pretty sweet deal to draw your friends back in--the recruited friend gets a free faction change, server transfer, and copy of Cataclysm, as well as a character instantly boosted to 80. This could explain all those ilvl 232 armor pieces and weapons we datamined back in 4.3--like the

Cataclysm Post Mortem -- Dungeons and Raids with Scott “Daelo” Mercer
2012/03/05 at 9:25 PM
Soon we fly together again...
We received the following pics from Blizzard this morning, with this cryptic message: "Soon we fly together again..."
Any idea what it could mean? We're curious to know more about these mounts!
Cataclysm Post Mortem: Dungeons and Raids
As a part of our post mortem series on Cataclysm, we sat down with World of Warcraft Lead Encounter Designer Scott “Daelo” Mercer to hear his thoughts on Cataclysm dungeons and raids.
Q. What were your main goals going into Cataclysm?
We really wanted to make sure we were creating new challenges, strong mechanics, and cool creatures while staying true to the expansion and the themes we wanted to carry out. The three raid dungeons came out well and we had a lot of fun bringing the story of Nefarian and the Twilight’s Hammer to life. We were also able to add some dynamic mechanics in
Throne of the Four Winds
, which featured players moving across multiple platforms.

New Ghostcrawler Blog: Mists of Pandaria Stat Changes
2012/03/01 at 8:06 PM
Our recent talent calculator changes led to some players asking questions about how character and item stats were changing, because some spell and talent tooltips suggest that changes are coming. We compiled this list to attempt to explain more of what’s coming in Mists of Pandaria. First of all, please note that we actually aren’t making many stat changes compared to the ones we made in Cataclysm (“armor penetration -- gone!”). Second, the stuff below can get a little technical. If you’re not into the subtle nuance of gear itemization, then don’t worry about it -- you don’t need to be to enjoy the expansion -- but we know there are plenty of you who enjoy some nuts and bolts talk, so here we go.
Spell resistance is gone. There are no buffs that improve it and there shouldn’t be much, if any, spell resist gear left. We always thought the system was hard to understand and we weren’t getting much gameplay out of it. Now taking a step back, we can imagine how to develop a game where you’d want various forms of resist gear for certain situations and opponents. Resist gear could potentially be interesting, b
Blizzard Lays Off 600 Employees
2012/02/29 at 12:05 PM
Blizzard is letting go approximately six hundred employees globally with over 90% of them from non-development teams (
). According to Blizzard, the development cycle will not be impacted.
As a personal aside, to everyone let go, the Wowhead staff is thinking of you and we hope you land on your feet. Layoffs are horrible things to experience.
We announced today that we’re in the process of cutting a number of active positions, mostly non-development, throughout the company. I'm sure this announcement has sparked some questions from all of you, so I want take this opportunity to address those as best I can. Over the past several years, the company has grown rapidly and evolved to better serve you and the rest of our global community. Cataclysm Post Mortem -- Quest Design with Dave Kosak
2012/02/28 at 12:34 PM
To kick-off our World of Warcraft: Cataclysm post mortem series, we sat down with World of Warcraft Lead Quest Designer Dave “Fargo” Kosak to discuss his thoughts on questing in Cataclysm.
Q: What were your main goals going into Cataclysm?
Certainly from a quest design standpoint our primary goal with Cataclysm was to remake the old world, specifically the 1-60 questing experience. World of Warcraft was released in 2004, and we've learned so much in the years since about what constitutes good MMO gameplay. We wanted to make sure that the game was relevant to new players coming in, and walking up and down the length of the Barrens on foot over and over just didn’t do it for us anymore.
Remaking the entire old world -- 46 zones! -- was ambitious. Actually, it was ludicrous. It was like re-releasing a whole game in the course of an expansion cycle. Then we added a couple new races and their starting zones on top of that. I’m not sure how we convinced ourselves we could make it happen, but somehow we pulled it together.
Q: Are you happy with how the old world re-vamp turned out?
I am. Leveling up a new character to 60 nowadays is a gr
Best in Show: A Guide to All Shirts
2012/02/25 at 10:01 AM
Shirts can't be transmogged, but a well-chosen one can change the look of everyday gear. They're not restricted by class or armor limitations, so nothing is out of reach for avid collectors. They're great for both bank alts, players looking to cover up skin, or show off a rare find.
Plus, Ashelia has always wanted a shirt guide, and since this week marked a year for her at Wowhead, I thought it was a good time to write such a guide!
I've organized all the shirts by color, as well as providing descriptions, acquisition methods, and crafting materials. The descriptions are more elaborate than in the past--besides a written blurb, there's toggled user-submitted screenshots for every shirt.
