Hallow's End Guide (Oct. 18th - 31st)
2011/10/18 at 12:02 AM
It's that time of the year again--ghosts and goblins, witches and warlocks unite!
hits Azeroth today.
Hallow's End is one of my favorite holidays in World of Warcraft. Running from from
October 18 - October 31
, the holiday invites players to gather candy, wands, food, masks, and even vanity pets from inn keepers all over the in-game world.
Before we get onto our guide, we'd like to cover the immediate changes for those who already are familiar with the event. There are quite a few with this event for this year, including new items and a new currency system:
Gone are the days of trick-or-treating hourly for a chance at an extremely rare mask or a rare vanity item. Instead, the event has been streamlined into a vendor and daily system, very similar to
. One new vanity pet,
, makes its appearance here on a vendor, for example; meanwhile, old favorites, such as
have been made purchasable. There's also
from a short questline and
from vendors which is a fun campfire.
Tricky treats are obtained through dailies and the pumpkins spread throughout in
Orange: A Guide to all Legendary Weapons
2011/10/16 at 3:59 PM
With the buzz about the teaser information for
Fangs of the Father
, it's a good time to go back and look at the other legendaries Blizzard has implemented across expansions. Many of these weapons have similarly striking questlines and unique models--even if you can't transmogrify them, they're worth collecting. Whether you're trying to farm one of these for the looks or lore, or were the first person in your guild to receive one during progression, legendaries have a special place in everyone's heart.
We've also gone through the database to highlight removed, silly, and temporary legendaries for your amusement, as they've got some funny stories behind them too!
Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest
This staff is a must-have for any caster in Firelands--plus it turns you into a dragon (

acquiring this weapon
, but we'll give you a few of the highlights here. Players w
4.3 Preview: Well of Eternity Overview and Dragon Soul Testing
2011/10/14 at 10:32 PM
Blizzard hit us with an unexpected testing phase this afternoon of the new raid as well as the final 5-man; unfortunately, the raid was announced right as the bosses went live, so the servers started tanking immediately while everyone rushed to log on. Only a few groups got a 10-man together--most top-end guilds fought the loading screen boss instead, getting 4-5 of their members in the instance before testing time ran out. We managed to get in and take some screenshots, but sadly, the majority of my guild was stuck at the loading bar for the entire night.
All of this is to say I doubt we'll see many good videos, as the streams were fairly disappointing due to guilds like Blood Legion only able to pull trash due to limited numbers--most videos will probably be PUG point of views.
A rocky start, but hopefully we'll have some great testing sessions before and after BlizzCon!
Here are our other 5-man related previews

4.3 Dragon Soul Raid Drops
2011/10/14 at 1:36 PM
Last night's PTR patch let us see what will drop from the new raid instance, as the dungeon journal was updated for the Dragon Soul bosses finally.
Some notes: the items themselves aren't entirely done nor is this by any means a final draft of the loot and its ilevels. We think the stats are fairly accurate; however, their names are obviously generated with the "Horrific" prefix and some of their text is erroneous, like the season 10 item or the multiple ones that require Avengers' of Hyjal reputation. Still, this serves as a great basis for what's dropping where--as well as what type of boss you'll be facing, lootwise. I mean, Spine of Deathwing is looking like a trinket boss to us!
Patch 4.3 - PTR Build 14849 - Spell Changes, Darkmoon Faire Replica Items, and More
2011/10/13 at 2:43 PM
A new PTR patch is out; here are the spell differences, icons, maps, and more. Note that while many of the changes are in the
PTR patch notes
, some of them were not (such as Windwalk or Ambidexterity changes).
Remember when they said Darkmoon Faire would, you know, bring back legacy items?
Well, they're back, baby: the original level 60 dungeon sets are making their return, both the blue and epic sets, such as
Replica Soulforge Breastplate
Replica Devout Gloves
Click here for a complete list of new (and returning) items!
There's also a whole slew of PvP gear, but most of it is available on the vendors right now, so we'll have to see if that means they moved its location. Still no word on tier 3 or season 3 gear, but I think there's a good chance it's coming.
And not to be outdone,
Elementium Gem Cluster
make a show--undoubtedly for making the rogue legendary. (As well as
Spectral Mount Crate
for those ghostly mounts so many people didn't like.)

Public Test Realm Patch 4.3 Notes: Updated 10/13
2011/10/13 at 11:52 AM
Some class changes in the PTR notes today: many classes had abilities buffed, especially Warlocks (for example,
lasts 20 seconds instead of 15), Warriors got new character attack animations, and low-level druids should find it easier to tank while leveling now with an armor boost. Another interesting change is the buff to
, making it an even more effective tanking cooldown.

Guardian Cub Coming to Blizzard Pet Store Soon
2011/10/10 at 11:32 AM
Blizzard's finally putting that model we datamined back in 4.2 to use--the
will be available on their virtual pet store shortly!
An interesting thing to note is that this pet will be bind-on-equip. It will be interesting to see if this ends up going well or badly for Blizzard. On one hand, it means people will no longer try to sell them in trade chat as potential scams; on the other, it allows people to essentially buy gold.
Coming soon to a Pet Store near you: the new and titanically cute Guardian Cub companion. You’ve soared across Azeroth on the majestic Winged Guardian. Soon, you'll be able to purchase a pint-sized Guardian of the Titans sidekick to accompany you on your adventures.
Stunning good looks and adorable, supersized eyes aren’t all this new pet has going for it. The Guardian Cub is also the Pet Store's first tradable pet, meaning it can be swapped between characters in-game or given as a gift to guildmates, friends, family, or that special someone -- no adoption papers
Transmogrification, Part 6: A Guide to all Cloak Styles
2011/10/08 at 12:03 PM
For the most up-to-date version of this guide,
for additional capes and MoP styles.
Capes are the bane of transmogrification. There's so many options, they're never designed to match specific tier, and some of them cut into your cool weapons. Although there's a "show/hide cloak" option, hiding it is the easy way out.
This past week, Ashelia and I went through over a thousand capes in the database, sorting them by similar models for a different project and we decided to make it into a guide. With this guide, you can find the perfect cape to match the removed ones from Trial of the Grand Crusader, a crafted cape that's identical to a raid epic you've never seen, a completely unique model from a quest reward, or even a blue-quality version of your favorite tattered grey cape.
The capes have loosely been categorized by Unique Designs, Patterned, Two-Tone, Solid with Border, and Faction. From there, the capes have been further categorized as medium (hip-length), long (ankle-length), and split (two rectangles ending at waist). We've provided screenshots of all the capes we own, and you can always use our modelviewe
4.3 Preview: Chromatic Dragon Pet and Loot Rule Changes
2011/10/07 at 11:44 AM
We wanted to post a few models up that Alayton found for us--mostly the Chromatic Dragon pet, which I am betting is the reward for the guild legendary for tier 13, since there already was a Deathwing pet a while ago. There are also the Lunar New Year rewards we speculated one as well as the Scarab pet from the next TCG edition (not archaeology as we had hoped).
As for the Fel Hippogryph, he's actually from the TCG (thanks to reader Nathanyel for the tip).
New Loot Rules in 4.3
In response to concerns regarding how loot will be distributed in the Raid Finder system, we are making some changes to how loot rolls will work when using the Need Before Greed system in the Raid Finder. When using Raid Finder for the Dragon Soul raid instanc
Patch 4.3 - PTR Build 14809 - Spell Changes, New Items, and More
2011/10/07 at 4:12 AM
There was a small patch last night. Nothing huge--just new maps for the 5-mans as well as some achievements for PvE encounters in 4.3. In any case, we also have a
new data push on the PTR site
so you can check out all the data we've acquired so far. A major thanks to everyone who uses the
as well during the PTR, it always helps us!
I'm tacking on some notable blue posts here as sort of a round up as well--heirlooms might be changing in the future and void storage pricing was changed considerably. Hopefully this stops some of the complaining we've seen about the prices!
We would like to share an insight on the approach that is the philosophy behind the heirlooms at the moment. This is still something that may change, so please do not take it as set in stone.
In short, the developers agree that the process of mailing heirlooms around constantly is a little annoying. We'd prefer to try and work ourselves away from the method of mailing out BoA items in the future, like pets, mounts, etc. To that end, we have some desig
Hunter Tier 13 and Visual Retrospective

We like to tie a Hunter’s Tier armour in with an appropriate donor creature – it suggests the Hunter has actually hunted for the set! As there’s an awful lot of dragons in this patch, a draconic theme was the way to go. We wanted to reference but not simply reproduce the classic Dragonstalker set. To that end, we limited the use of dragon heads to the helm and chained leathery wings around the shoulders which gives the impression of a skeletal drago
4.3 5-man Dungeon Drops
2011/10/05 at 4:22 PM
We managed to get the loot tables for the 5-mans (prettied up by resident volunteer Neutronimity, thanks!)--this is probably a lot more helpful than our datamined list of items as these show what will drop from where and what stats you can start looking forward to picking up.
A quick rundown of the items: they're ilevel 378 and surprisingly solid stats. The trinkets were taken from Bastion of Twilight and Blackwing Descent in procs and on uses, making them equally solid; whose death knight alt wouldn't want to nab a ?
As a side note, there are also unique dungeon sets for these 5-mans. While they do not have set bonuses, they do have a noticeable style which
