5.3 PTR: Valley of Spirits Shut Down, Pet Battle Accuracy Changes
2013/04/05 at 12:03 PM
Today's newspost covers two very different types of battles on the PTR--Battlefield: Barrens and pet battle changes. Since our
post last week on the Horde Rebellion
, we've found a few more signs of strife in the area and it's now been included in the
official 5.3 PTR Patch Notes
. Most notably, the Valley of Spirits has been shut down in 5.3 under Kor'kron surveillance.
And if you prefer lighter combat, pet battles are getting some accuracy changes in 5.3 to keep combat from feeling repetitive.
Valley of Spirits Shut Down
The first time we previewed Orgrimmar on the PTR, Kor'kron guards were keeping the troll section of Orgrimmar on lockdown. But things have gotten even worse--they've terrified the NPCs to the point where the Valley of Spirits has been shut down. Players cannot access the Auction House, Banks, class trainers, profession trainers, and all vendors. (Suddenly, those pet snakes from
may be rare...)
In addition, the portal to Blasted Lands has been removed, and

Updated 5.3 PTR Patch Notes and Patch 5.2 Hotfixes
2013/04/02 at 2:20 PM
Blizzard just posted some Patch 5.2 Hotfixes on their US blog, as well as updated 5.3 PTR Patch Notes earlier today on their EU blog. Here's the highlights:
Horde Rebellion we noticed last week on the 5.3 PTR
is now officially in the notes and called "Quest Campaign: Escalation."
Players complete quests to support the Darkspear in rebelling against Garrosh, and destroy Kor'kron NPCs and their supply carts in the Northern Barrens.
As rewards, players get
Latent Kor’kron Armor
which can be turned into a spec-appropriate ilvl 476 epic.
Rank 9 and 10 bosses have been added to the Brawler's Guild. (Not in notes: Rank 10 players can purchase
Brawler's Burly Mushan Beast
on the PTR.)
Rank 8 players can access special VIP areas.
As we noted last week

April Fools' Roundup, 3rd Wing of LFR Opens Today and Loot Overview
2013/04/02 at 11:38 AM
April Fools' Roundup
We love coming up with April Fools' ideas at Wowhead and seeing what clever things other sites come up with! This year, the Wowhead Staff plotted to liven up the 5.3 PTR with
cosmetic character auras, Earth Day, Doritios Locos feasts. and more
. We hope you all had fun with it, and we'd love to see some cosmetic rewards or updated world events in the future on the real PTR!
Here's some of our other favorite pranks:
ElvUI users did the Harlem Shake
upon logging in, which not only made your character dance but shook up all of your ability buttons.
WoW Interface discovered that Blizzard was switching to a Flash-based UI
, with swf and js files in the Patch 5.4 alpha client.
WarcraftPets broke the news that players can summon multiple pets at a time
but with a cost--the more pets you have out, the lower their polygon count
5.3 PTR: Build 16790 Spell Changes, 3D Pegasus Mount Models, and More
2013/04/01 at 5:42 PM
A new 5.3 PTR build was datamined this afternoon--yes, it's April 1st, but from what we can tell, this data is completely legitimate on Blizzard's side.
Check out the latest additions!
We datamined two versions of a yet-unnamed Pegasus mount--blue and red! Click on the images to view them in our 3D Modelviewer.
New Global Strings
The global strings had a few additions--most notably, one that deals with the new loot mechanics allowing players receive loot for a specialization that's different from their current class role.
+CALENDAR_ERROR_MODERATOR_RESTRICTED = "Starter Edition accounts cannot be moderators.";
+ERR_LOOT_SPEC_CHANGED_S = "Loot Specialization set to: %s";
+ITEM_UPGRADE_BONUS_FORMAT = "(+%d) ";
Several glyphs were changed. As this is the PTR, keep in mind that base abilities might later be tweaked to incorporate the old glyp
5.3 PTR Preview: Earth Day, Doritos Locos Sponsorship, Auras, and More!
2013/04/01 at 11:49 AM
There are some major changes coming to World of Warcraft from the latest PTR patch. There's some really exciting stuff, including a new holiday and auras that will allow you to cosmetically alter your character to varying degrees. Both Perculia and I have been hard at work on the PTR getting screenshots of these changes and uncovering the latest details.
Oh, and one more thing:
If you're seeing broken item links, we've unfortunately had to remove these fake items for real datapushes. Click on the images below to view what the original article looked like:
If you've played
, you may remember how the collector's edition had special wings for your character. The
Heart of the Swarm collector's edition
also had a special aura as well.
Well, it seems like auras are coming to World of Warcraft. They will be

2013 Noblegarden Guide (April 1 - 8)
2013/03/31 at 4:17 PM
It's time for
--a hunt for loot, this time in the form of brightly colored eggs! We join together to "share the joy of life and friendship" all the while looking for carefully hidden eggs and devouring tons of chocolate!
April 1 at 2:00 PM
and ends on
April 8 at 2:00 PM
--a change from holidays starting overnight on the weekends.
Brightly Colored Eggs
have been hidden all across the starting areas for both Alliance and Horde players to discover. These eggs can contain chocolates which serve as a currency to buy seasonal goodies--sometimes they also have special prizes! Simply head out to one of your faction's starting areas, grab some quests, and get out there and hunt eggs! Maybe you'll even earn some achievements along the way!
CRZ intially made many low-level areas crowded when Noblegarden started this year. A hotfix has been implemented that greatly
increases the spawn rate on Brightly Colored Eggs
Diablo III for Console: Press Kit and PAX East Interview
2013/03/30 at 1:11 PM
Last weekend at PAX East, we checked out the Diablo III console demo in addition to covering
Hearthstone, Blizzard's new game
While Diablo III may seem easy to adapt for console play, there are a lot of quality-of-life changes:
In multiplayer mode, you'll be able to play side-by-side, as well as via the network. The camera will zoom out to accommodate players separated.
Fewer items drop from mobs, but they tend to be high quality. Items you wish to vendor can also be tagged as junk while fighting.
Higher-quality items drop from the console version because there is no Auction House as a means of obtaining gear.
Console monsters have a staggered combat rhythm, as being surprised by a cluster of mobs is exciting and fun on a PC, but less so with console mechanics.
A new event queue shows recent buffs and items looted. Symbols will pop up for all recent items showing how much of an upgrade or downgrade it is, for easy reference.
