Blizzard Releases 5.2 Teaser

Happy Monday--Blizzard's just given the press and fansites a 5.2 teaser to share with the masses! It shows many of the things we're excited for, including those particularly wonderful dinosaur mounts.

5.2 PTR: New Daily Quests

We've got the first batch of 5.2 daily quests to share with you and one thing is for certain--you'll be killing a lot of Trolls. The majority of datamined quests cover daily quests associated with two new factions, the Kirin-Tor Offensive and the Sunreaver Onslaught. Several of these quests are in a very early stage, between their jokey names or missing descriptions, but other offer details about the Loa, Zandalari lore developments, and the Mogu.
There's also some information on the areas in Isle of the Thunder King--the Bestiary of Jelek appears to be a center for Zandalari forces, while the Court of Bones is home to Mogu Sorcerers. And this patch's poop quest is found in Ihgaluk Crag, home to the Saurok.
We also found a weekly quest and raid quest tied to the upcoming 5.2 raid, Throne of Thunder:

Transmog Weapon Restrictions Changed
Last month, Blizzard tweeted about possible transmog restrictions being lifted in 5.2:
Removing main-hand/off-hand Xmog restrictions maybe by 5.2. Also allowing Xmog of weaps w/ similar anims (2H axe/2H sword, etc).
Problem right now is fist weapons can be quite big, & Monk anims are detailed enough that these weapons cause bad art clipping.
I discussed w/ @Ghostcrawler & he's going to see if we can make polearm Xmog work for War/DK/Ret weapon types. Want to!
While transmogging Off Hand or Main Hand weapons to One Hand weapons wasn't possible on the PTR, we realized that over 600 Ma
5.2 PTR: New Spell Effects

Several new and redesigned abilities got interesting spell effects on the PTR, so we took screenshots and Lore made a video of them! Here's the ones we thought were the most interesting:
Ring of Peace
, Level 60
New Talent: Forms a sanctuary around the target for 8 sec, causing all enemies to be silenced and disarmed within 8 yards.
, Level 30 Brewmaster and Windwalker
ability: Clears you of all root, stun and fear effects and reduces the duration of future such effects by 60% for 6 sec. Nimble Brew can be cast while stunned or feared.
Marked for Death
, Level 90
New Talent (replaces Versatility): Mark the target, instantly generating 5 combo points on them. When the target dies, Marked for Death's cooldown is reset.
, Level 60
New Talent: Immediately teleport to a targeted location, leaving a shadow of yourself behind. Upon activating the effect a second time, or after 10 sec, you will return to your shadow's location.
, level 90
Redesigned Talent: A ranged attack that deals 1246 Physical damage to an enemy target. If the enemy is farther than
5.2 PTR Zone Preview: Isle of Giants, Isle of the Thunder King

The 5.2 PTR opened up today, and while it's still a work in progress, we have some visual previews of the new zones for you!
Isle of Giants
is a small tropical isle to the north of Kun-Lai Summit that features the new world boss,
, a troll dinosaur.
Isle of the Thunder King
is able to be explored in an incomplete scenario form.
Edit: as of 1/3, these scenarios have been locked, most likely to fix some bugs.
This is the location for the new 5.2 raid, new quest hubs featuring the Kirin Tor Offensive and Sunreaver Onslaught, a new world boss, a Lightning Forge used to craft weapons with distinctive or formerly-removed models, and a Shipyard, Main Courtyard, and Treasure Room.
Isle of Thunder
explored the Scenario version of
Isle of Thunder
. In his walkthrough of the zone, he speculates on what each visually-unique area is used for, based on the 5.2 PTR Patch Notes.

The 5.2 PTR just opened up with level 90 premades available! We're really excited to be able to check out all the
cool things we datamined last month
and will be having more news up shortly! Right now it looks like at least two scenarios are open for each faction.

News Round Up: Valor Point Cap, Ghostcrawler Twitter Highlights

While many of us are still on vacation, Blizzard staff is returning to regular news posting! Today we have some explanations behind the
cap--always a hot topic--and what the purpose of common-quality vendor gear serves when it gives minimal upgrades. Personally, I think it adds some neat flavor even if the items aren't huge upgrades, but would like to be able to use them for transmog.
Ghostcrawler has also been pretty active on twitter dispensing advice and answering player concerns. We've picked out some of the most interesting recent ones, which cover class balance, LFR droprates, and cooking catch-up mechanisms.

5.2 PTR: Raid and Scenario Preview, No New Dungeons

Today's 5.2 feature covers information about upcoming encounters--raid bosses and scenarios! While some bosses have incomplete entries so far and the loot tables aren't known yet, you can still get a sense of what the encounters are like with the Dungeon Journal. We think it's pretty neat that the Dungeon Journal is deliberately vague about
, a heroic-only encounter, by saying he's instead "shrouded in mystery"--brings back a sense of player discovery.
And as there's no new 5-player dungeons planned for the rest of MoP, we've highlighted our 5.2 scenario summaries to give you a taste of upcoming small-group content.
No New Dungeons in 5.2
People who read the
5.2 PTR Patch Note Preview
may have noticed that there was no mention of new 5-player dungeons. Zarhym clarified that this was intentional, as it would disrupt the current progression model.
LFR has taken the place of dungeons for gearing-up mid-expansion. While players enjoyed
at the end of Burning Crusade, in the current raid context, it's strange for a dungeon's loot to be on par with raid gear. Players were unhappy with how 4.3 dungeon loot was compa
Transmogrification Guides: Troll Armor (Updated for 5.4)

Patch 5.2 introduced
that bring back a ton of old troll designs, made inaccessible when the original versions of
were removed. We immediately thought what great transmog additions they would be for players!
The new version of
had some recolored weapons and armor, but they didn't match the original items. Plus, player favorites like
Ancient Amani Longbow
never made it into the new version of the instance.
was more extreme--the 5-piece sets from vanilla, often with surprisingly good itemization compared to Tier 1, were never put back in. While they aren't as eye-catching as the
armor, they hold sentimental value for a lot of players. Some distinctive weapons like
Fang of the Faceless
never made it back in either.
The majority of this lookalike gear was added in Patch 5.2 as zone drops from
Isle of Thunder
, but later patches have added a few pieces to fill in incomplete sets.

5.2 PTR: Season 13 PvP Armor

Last week we posted many 3D models of
Tier 15 PvE armor coming in Patch 5.2
: this week we have most Season 13 PvP sets to share! Since most model names are called "Alliance" or "Horde," it looks like Blizzard may be implementing faction-themed PvP gear. While the Tier 9 PvE sets had different models for the Alliance and Horde, this hasn't been done for PvP since vanilla, before arena seasons were introduced.
Several sets have four color variations, so perhaps the lower ilvl PvP gear will look the same across factions, and the unique Alliance and Horde colors will be reserved for the Elite gear, similar to how
Reins of the Vicious War Steed

are unique faction rewards for battleground dedication.
Shoulders have now been added to some PvP sets! Enjoy.
Patch 5.1: New Rare Tames

Over 100 low-level rares were also added in the most recent patch--many have distinctive colors that make them unique Hunter tames. In addition, Arcane Wyrms are now tamable serpents, and several received recolors for more variation.
If you're not a Hunter, these new rares don't drop any fancy loot, but they do give a significant amount of experience for killing them. The list is fun just to browse as well because many have clever names, like
Gib the Banana-Hoarder
, a monkey with a fez.
We've broken down the rares by continent and level, including zone details and 3D models, as well as by pet family. Tames with unique colors/models are marked in italics.
