News Round Up: Valor Point Cap, Ghostcrawler Twitter Highlights
2013/01/02 at 12:34 PM
While many of us are still on vacation, Blizzard staff is returning to regular news posting! Today we have some explanations behind the
cap--always a hot topic--and what the purpose of common-quality vendor gear serves when it gives minimal upgrades. Personally, I think it adds some neat flavor even if the items aren't huge upgrades, but would like to be able to use them for transmog.
Ghostcrawler has also been pretty active on twitter dispensing advice and answering player concerns. We've picked out some of the most interesting recent ones, which cover class balance, LFR droprates, and cooking catch-up mechanisms.
We've also refined some 3D models from our
popular Season 13 PvP post
--check out the new shoulders!
The cap should not really be seen as punishment to people for being able to reach the maximum amount of
s every week. The idea behind the cap is to give people a choice on how they reach the cap without having them feel obliged to do everything.
s should also not be considered the prim

For those looking to avoid trouble—or get into it—you may want to steer clear of—or head toward—Booty Bay as the guards there appear to be spending more time enjoying themselves than enforcing town rules (at least int
5.2 PTR: Raid and Scenario Preview, No New Dungeons
2012/12/29 at 11:23 AM
Today's 5.2 feature covers information about upcoming encounters--raid bosses and scenarios! While some bosses have incomplete entries so far and the loot tables aren't known yet, you can still get a sense of what the encounters are like with the Dungeon Journal. We think it's pretty neat that the Dungeon Journal is deliberately vague about
, a heroic-only encounter, by saying he's instead "shrouded in mystery"--brings back a sense of player discovery.
And as there's no new 5-player dungeons planned for the rest of MoP, we've highlighted our 5.2 scenario summaries to give you a taste of upcoming small-group content.
No New Dungeons in 5.2
People who read the
5.2 PTR Patch Note Preview
may have noticed that there was no mention of new 5-player dungeons. Zarhym clarified that this was intentional, as it would disrupt the current progression model.
LFR has taken the place of dungeons for gearing-up mid-expansion. While players enjoyed
at the end of Burning Crusade, in the current raid context, it's strange for a dungeon's loot to be on par with raid gear. Players were unhappy with how 4.3 dungeon loot was compa
Transmogrification Guides: Troll Armor (Updated for 5.4)
2012/12/28 at 11:23 AM
Patch 5.2 introduced
that bring back a ton of old troll designs, made inaccessible when the original versions of
were removed. We immediately thought what great transmog additions they would be for players!
The new version of
had some recolored weapons and armor, but they didn't match the original items. Plus, player favorites like
Ancient Amani Longbow
never made it into the new version of the instance.
was more extreme--the 5-piece sets from vanilla, often with surprisingly good itemization compared to Tier 1, were never put back in. While they aren't as eye-catching as the
armor, they hold sentimental value for a lot of players. Some distinctive weapons like
Fang of the Faceless
never made it back in either.
The majority of this lookalike gear was added in Patch 5.2 as zone drops from
Isle of Thunder
, but later patches have added a few pieces to fill in incomplete sets.

5.2 PTR: Season 13 PvP Armor
2012/12/27 at 3:30 PM
Last week we posted many 3D models of
Tier 15 PvE armor coming in Patch 5.2
: this week we have most Season 13 PvP sets to share! Since most model names are called "Alliance" or "Horde," it looks like Blizzard may be implementing faction-themed PvP gear. While the Tier 9 PvE sets had different models for the Alliance and Horde, this hasn't been done for PvP since vanilla, before arena seasons were introduced.
Several sets have four color variations, so perhaps the lower ilvl PvP gear will look the same across factions, and the unique Alliance and Horde colors will be reserved for the Elite gear, similar to how
Reins of the Vicious War Steed
Horn of the Vicious War Wolf
are unique faction rewards for battleground dedication.
Shoulders have now been added to some PvP sets! Enjoy.
Patch 5.1: New Rare Tames
2012/12/26 at 12:17 PM
Over 100 low-level rares were also added in the most recent patch--many have distinctive colors that make them unique Hunter tames. In addition, Arcane Wyrms are now tamable serpents, and several received recolors for more variation.
If you're not a Hunter, these new rares don't drop any fancy loot, but they do give a significant amount of experience for killing them. The list is fun just to browse as well because many have clever names, like
Gib the Banana-Hoarder
, a monkey with a fez.
We've broken down the rares by continent and level, including zone details and 3D models, as well as by pet family. Tames with unique colors/models are marked in italics.

Patch 5.2 PTR Patch Note Preview
2012/12/22 at 12:10 AM
Hot on the heels of the
new datamined 5.2 patch this evening
, featuring Tier 15 armor models, new boss descriptions, and hundreds of items, comes Blizzard's official Patch 5.2 Patch Note Preview.
Three new factions: Kirin-Tor Offensive led by Jaina Proudmoore and the Sunreaver Onslaught led by Lor'themar Theron. Players can choose to do PvE or PvP quests with these factions. A third faction, the Shado-Pan Assault, has impressive Valor rewards and reputation can only be earned in raids.
Two new world bosses: Nalak, the Storm Lord and Oondasta.
The new raid is the Throne of Thunder, which has 13 bosses, and 4 different segments on Raid Finder.
All world bosses are now Tap to Faction. This new system offers every eligible player of the same faction that engages a boss the chance to earn loot.
The legendary questline continues in 5.2, with the reward being some special helm-related perk.
Elite Battle Pets have been added to the game world--they will spawn alone against an entire team.

, is coming! All
bosses were revealed:Horridon:
The Zandalari brought powerful creatures with them to the Isle of the Thunder King to use as engines of war. Led by the War-God Jalak, the dinomancers of the Zandalari Beast Ward use ancient tribal magics to strengthen the great beasts and command obedience. The horns of Horridon, the fabled mount of Jalak himself, can tear through the stone walls of a keep as a blade cuts silk.

Patch 5.2: Thunder Isle Teaser from Blizzard, PTR in January
2012/12/21 at 2:11 AM
Blizzard woke us up in the middle of the night to share this sweet teaser pic of Thunder Isle, the new raid dungeon in 5.2. From this picture, we can also learn that the 5.2 PTR is hitting soon, right on the heels of the holidays. Blizzard really seems to be sticking to their promise of delivering new content patches quickly.
Here's their official statement:
Happy Holidays from the World of Warcraft team! Here’s a small present to tide you over until the new year.
We can't tell
much about the raid theme from this picture, besides that it has really awesome Pandaren-themed architecture with some Mogu statues in the courtyard--what do you think the new raid theme could be? Several devs have hinted that they were inspired by Ulduar.
We've seen the Thunder King alluded to in a few places already, such as in Golden Lotus quests like
Battle Axe of the Thunder King
, legendary quests like
The Thunder King
, and archaeology (
Collector: Edicts of the Thunder King
). Known as Emperor Lei Shen, the Thunder King was a powerful mogu leader who defeated all of his rivals with the aid of a mysterious relic, and was resurrected by
at the Isle of Reckoning in Mists.
