Obtained via challenge mode dungeon achievement: Challenge Conqueror: Silver.

Other colors you can also choose from are Ashen , Violet and Crimson.

After completing Challenge Conqueror: Silver today, I received an Ancestral Phoenix Egg in the mail along with a letter from Kai Featherfall.

Congratulations hunter,

Conquering the mighty challenges put before you is a laudable achievement, and in recognition of this mighty deed we entrust to you the egg of an Ancestral Phoenix. Visit me in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms and choose your boon companion.

It was a tough choice to decide which Phoenix I wanted, since they are not account-wide and you can only obtain one egg per character, but I chose this one because I find it to be the most stunning of the four. The contrast of the red rope and gold emblem against its blue-green colored feathers is very unique when compared to other mounts (not just the phoenixes).

All four Ancestral Phoenix mounts have streamers like Ashes of Al'ar (with which they share a model), except the streamers are spectral colored and very subtle, rather than bold pink.

The sound-byte when you mount up on them is a high-pitched bird call, and is certainly my personal favorite mount sound in the game because it sounds a lot more realistic than the bland roar or moan other mounts make when summoned.

You can view all four mounts side-by-side outside The Seat of Knowledge on the upper level of Mogu'shan Palace where you can also trade in your egg once you have completed the required achievement.

The Pandaren Phoenixes are designed after the Chinese phoenix, also known as the Fenghuang (wikipedia). The most striking features of the bird are its peacock tail, crane legs, and feathers of multiple colours (black, white, red, blue, yellow).

It's a shame they didn't go with the three-legged version though; now that would be a unique mount.

While WoWhead says these are "account wide mounts" they are actually NOT account wide. You can get one color on each character that completes the achievement, but you will not be able to have all colors on any character.

The mount you purchase with the egg will be returnable for 2 hours so as long as you don't learn the mount you will be able to pick a different color.

Blizzard notification on the Phoenix mounts come WoD:

"The Pandaren Phoenix mounts awarded for a full set of Silver medals will become account-wide. If any character on an account has earned a full set of Silver medals, all four variants of the Pandaren Phoenix (Crimson, Ashen, Violet, and Emerald) will become available to all characters account-wide."

Come WoD, you can purchase all Phoenixes that you do NOT have for 1k each, providing that you can purchase them.
