Obtained via trading in an Ancestral Phoenix Egg (which is obtained via challenge mode dungeon achievement: Challenge Conqueror: Silver).

Other colors you can also choose from are Violet and Emerald and Crimson.

At the moment it looks like it's only possible to pick one color, so choose wisely!

The Pandaren Phoenixes are designed after the Chinese phoenix, also known as the Fenghuang (wikipedia). The most striking features of the bird are its peacock tail, crane legs, and feathers of multiple colours (black, white, red, blue, yellow).

It's a shame they didn't go with the three-legged version though; now that would be a unique mount.

While WoWhead says these are "account wide mounts" they are actually NOT account wide. You can get one color on each character that completes the achievement, but you will not be able to have all colors on any character.

Am I the only druid who's disappointed that it's a flying only mount?

As lovely as it is, it's useless for us. On to Gold for transmogs, I guess.

You have to complete the achievement on 3 more characters to get all 4 mounts. But a character who completed the achievement can only use 1 of the four mounts, you can't have all the colors in any character.

The mount you purchase with the egg will be returnable for 2 hours so as long as you don't learn the mount you will be able to pick a different color.

So, my question is, if you were to get all 4, would they all count towards the <X> number of mounts achievements?

As mentioned after completing Challenge Conqueror: Silver you are awarded a Ancestral Phoenix Egg and then you are given a choice to chose one of four mounts.

Ancestral Phoenix Egg is not automatically given (unlike the gold cache which is automatically given) instead you are mailed the egg by Kai Featherfall. In the mail you will receive the egg and a letter which reads:

Congratulations <enter your class here>,

Conquering the mighty challenges put before you is a laudable achievement, and in recognition of this mighty deed we entrust to you the egg of an Ancestral Phoenix. Visit me in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms and choose your boon companion.

Kai is located outside The Seat of Knowledge on the upper level of Mogu'shan Palace.

Up until the time I was faced with the actual decision of picking a color I thought, hands down, I was going to go with the violet phoenix because it looks so dark and badass in the pictures but luckily the mounts are on show next to Kai and I was able to compare and I ended up choosing this mount, the ashen phoenix, because honestly it is just so beautiful compared to the others.

Each of the four phoenix's have something going for them but to me I found the ashen phoenix to 'pop' more visually and it also looked the loveliest because it's so light and airy looking. Seriously it's so pretty. With this mount there are three main feather colors that are subtle but work well with the color accents, the main feather colors are slate blue grey, pale cool grey and a bone-olive warm grey which make the turquoise and lime green accents just explode and it compliments the pretty silver medallion around it's neck. Also each phoenix has vapor like trails when flying (like all phoenix mounts in game) and the vapor colour for this mount is a pretty shimmery turquoise color so when flying, in my opinion, it's the prettiest phoenix because everything just looks so darn good on it. Also a fun point to note is when you mount up on any of these CM silver mounts a high-pitched call sounds off, scared the hellbells out of me the first time because I wasn't expecting it.

The exciting news is come WoD this mount will be account wide as confirmed by a blue post.

EDIT: I've been reading false statements that you can't have more then one CM phoenix per account (not per toon) this is incorrect. I've got three on the one account and working for my fourth. Right now the mount is toon bound but come WoD it becomes account bound. Something to remember for those who manage multiple accounts you can safely transfer CM toons around your accounts and the phoenix will follow since it's toon specific mount (mounts are locked to account not toon unless it's toon specific) HOWEVER come WoD the mounts will become account bound hence remain on the account you achieved the CM runs on. So now is the time to move all the CM toons to one account if that is your plan. As of 9/16/2014 I closed one of my accounts and moved the toons to a main account and the CM phoenix traveled with my toon. So FYI

Blizzard notification on the Phoenix mounts come WoD:

"The Pandaren Phoenix mounts awarded for a full set of Silver medals will become account-wide. If any character on an account has earned a full set of Silver medals, all four variants of the Pandaren Phoenix (Crimson, Ashen, Violet, and Emerald) will become available to all characters account-wide."

Come WoD, you can purchase all Phoenixes that you do NOT have for 1k each, providing that you can purchase them.

After paying my last copper piece for a carry so I could obtain this most beautiful and most gorgeous of mounts before it is to be discontinued in Warlords of Draenor, I have one thing to say:

Not a fan of those bouncing head beads.
