A few days ago I confirmed that this mount, Reins of the Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent, drops off a level 92 rare spawn called Alani the Stormborn who is located flying around the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. My video of the kill can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLwzUnLKMwo . The mount drop of this rare spawn makes Alani the MoP version of the TLPD/Aeonaxx.

Alani has a buff called Nimbus Shroud which makes him immune from being attacked. This buff is removed from an item called Sky Crystal which is created by combining 10x Skyshard.

Skyshards have a chance to drop from most, if not all, mobs in Vale of Eternal Blossoms and also from the loot bag obtained from the final quest of the Golden Lotus dailies. The drop rate from the mobs is exceptionally low whilst I believe the loot bag is slightly higher. I think my longest gap between drops was around 24 hours of grind time (over several days ofc) and shortest was about 4 hours - RNG can be a pain. I found the best mobs to grind were the 'Trickster' mobs. These can be found is a few locations in the vale but most notably around the north to northwestern area of the Vale (33,26) and in the southern Mistfall Village. They have low health in comparison to other level 90 mobs and a relatively short respawn (1-3 mins). There's quite a few of them also in places which means you can AoE them down together. Be aware though, that these trickster mobs will not spawn every day as their spawn is related to the dailies that are available on that particular day. I was wondering, do you have to have cloud serpent riding to loot the mount off Alani? Or can you loot it without having cloud serpent riding and just keep it in your bags until you can use it? :)

I know this mount is a drop, my question is can you learn it when you get it without having Exalted August Celestial? Seeing as the item tooltip says it requires Exalted with them, I know you need Exalted with Order of the Cloud Serpent to have the Cloud Serpent Riding, but August Celestial?

I looted this today, likely one of the first kills of Alani on US servers. I had to kill roughly 12,000 mobs in Vale in order to obtain the 10 Skyshards needed.

It still requires August Celestials - Exalted.

I hate you Blizzard.

Oh no.. having to farm a faction rep with JUST dailies? that is kinda rough... Reminds me of something brutal like the skyguard rep from back in bc.. :) But, odds are that had far less dailies, and was harder to get, because i think that took me almost 6 weeks of farming every daily i could every day..

We still got it far easier these days no matter what blizz makes us do. Just be thankful we're not grinding reps as hard as winterspring frostsaber rep was originally. I'm sure a couple people committed suicide over that one ;P

I got this mount on live servers today. My friend came with me and passed on the roll just to see if the roll comes up. Confirmed, anyone in the group can roll on the reins. You can sell this mount IE: Someone can pay you to join your group and they can roll on the mount even though you "summoned" it. Hope this helps.

I finished farming Skyshards last night on live and killed her. Using the Sky Crystal is a short channeled spell but she aggros almost immediately, and to be safe I would suggest that you kill her during a low population server time or not announce that you're bringing her down until you've already killed her. She can be tagged out from underneath you, apparently.

I pulled her down on a jutting hilltop just south of the Shrine of Two Moons, near the Mogu colossi. She doesn't have any knockbacks or special abilities of any kind and goes down very quickly. Bring a few friends you trust, though, just in case you attract an audience. Once you've looted her corpse, Alani despawns within a few minutes, so take your victory screenshots fast.

I killed her last night at approximately 12:30am server time and more than six hours later she has not yet respawned, so she seems to have a long respawn timer.

All told, getting this mount took me about a week and a half of farming 6-12 hours daily. I made 25k gold on loot drops alone (and that's after sending every single dropped green to the guild enchanter) and pulled out around 10-15 Spirits of Harmony a day. Now that I have her, I have about two and a half weeks of August Celestials dailies left before I'm actually able to ride her.

I got my Alani yesterday. For some insight, I decided to post a couple of things:

Farming Area:
There was someone who suggested a good farming place would be in the daily quest town that can be under attack by Tricksters who set themselves on fire. This is where you will also find the Mottled Cow.
This area is where I got 6 shards and I highly recommend it! The cow will respawn instantly and can drop shards, so even if people are farming the tricksters, you can try that little guy.
**Keep in mind that I farmed here on my Holy paladin. So if you wanted a spot that was simple for a healer to do, here it is!
**This area is not always available every day of the week. But if you do happen to come across it, try it! I really am fond of this spot and will be sure to recommend it to anyone I know who wants an Alani for themselves.

Important:
Please do bring a friend you trust for Alani, because as other users have said, she IS able to be stolen. This is done by someone attacking her while the crystal is removing her health, or if someone kills you.

Location:
She will (eventually) fly over areas in Vale with neutral mobs and that is where I engaged her. I recommend places like these where you won't have mobs on you, especially if you are on a pvp server and need to get this done fast. Be sure to look around before you engage; my boyfriend noticed a caster running up (maybe trying to steal) and that ticked me off.

Combat:
I thought Alani would come in melee-range once engaged. She didn't, for us.
I engaged her on my holy paladin with my boyfriend (warrior) in the group. She spun in circles above me so I was constantly spammed with "Target must be in front of you," but I did get her. Maybe she does land in melee-range for some folk, but she didn't for us and I think it should be noted that if you want to kill her, bring someone you trust who is definitely able to help attack her.

Sky Crystal FAQ:
Your Sky Crystal is consumed once you use it, so if you mess up for any reason, your shot of Alani is gone. Please keep this in mind and be as careful as you can.

Bring someone you trust, have Master Looter on, look quickly around the spot you'll engage her to make sure of no nearby people. Use your cooldowns to kill her in a matter of seconds... so even if people do interfere, it is yours. We did, and by the time I looked up to see where she was, she landed dead on top of me with sparkles. /Screenshot.

Good luck and be careful! I really hope they fix the fact that she can be stolen, but until then, it will not hurt you to be safe and aware.

hello all, my question:

is it possible obtain that mount and learn it on he char which isnt exlted (horde), and use with exaleted char (ali) on the same account? or it reamins in inventory till char whose got it will eb exalted? and is it acountwide ot like tundra vendro mamoth just one side fractioned? thanks

Just got my "mini Alani" yesterday, spent the better part of every day since i hit lvl 90 on farming for this thing. And now i have it, now i can finaly.... do absolutely bloody nothing with it!

I get that those mounts bought from the August Celestials require reputation with them, but how does that work with a mount dropped by a dragon that flies around freely? Do they have a copyright on the name "Thundering"?

Especially now that the fixed the thing with crane quest hub it would take about a month or even longer to get to exalted.

Everybody use the suggestion feature and send blizzard a suggestion to remove the reputation requirement. I know its a long shot but at least its something.

A Complete guide to farming Skyshards and defeating Alani <the Stormborn> for Reins of the Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent

Alani <the Stormborn> is a lvl 92 rare Dragon that is found flying around The Vale of Eternal Blossoms in Pandaria. Alani is MoP's Time-Lost Proto drake/Aeonaxx, but unlike them she is easily found. She does however, have a buff Nimbus Shroud that makes her immune to attack. The buff is removed with a Sky Crystal which is made by combining 10xSkyshard . Once killed she 100% drops the mount Reins of the Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent. You will need to be exalted with The August Celestials to use this mount.

Name plates are very helpful.

Farming: Skyshard
Skyshards have a low drop rate of about 1/1000. They can be found in Treasures of the Vale (from Golden Lotus Dalies),Small Bag of Goods (from rare spawns in the Vale) and looted from most mobs found in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. There is also a chance to get shards from archaeology within the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
These shards will have to be farmed. During this farm grind you will get a ton of gold from greens, motes of harmony, and cloth. I also found a nice epic ring, and a few nice blues to sell. Best times to farm are early in the morning and late at night when others are not questing. Some days multiple shards will drop for you, other days you will get none. RNG based. The add on Rarity will help you track your drop rate.

The best mobs to farm are the "Sprites" or "Tricksters" found in the vale. They are of low health and respawn fairly quick. They can be found depending on the dailies from Golden Lotus. Slateskin Troublemakers are best to farm when Mistffall Village is on fire do to the daily "My Town, It's on Fire!" and "Sprite Plight" During these dailies the sprites run through the town kicking over buckets of fire. Once they do they get a DOT debuff "on fire!" which will slowly kill them. You can tag them and just wait for them to die. This is where name plates become very helpfull in targeting them. I picked a spot near the cow (at 33.34/72.68) so I could pull that too. While the cow no longer insta respawns, it still can drop shards, and will repspawn every minute. From here, you can easiy tag all 4 incoming sprites and the cow.

If this daily is not available, you will have to farm the Stonebark Tricksters at Ruins Rise (30.83/20.71). These are found in groups, and are easily AOE'd down. They respawn fairly quick. Go from group to group killing all near by sprites and repeat.

Also decent are the mantids on top on the wall at Gate of the Setting Sun. (7.00/44.62) They will continuously spawn and run into the room, and with the help of the Shado-Pan NPC's killing them, you just have to tag them and finish them off.

Killing Alani <the Stormborn>:
As of 5.0.5 It is no longer possible for other players to tag Alani while the Sky Crystal is being channeled. Once you have all 10 Skyshards, you will right click to combine them into your Sky Crystal. Find a high up place to engage her. Group only with friends you trust as they will be able to loot the mount as well, making this mount able to be sold/given to others. Alani has a huge hit/loot box. Once you find a place to engage her, right clicking your crystal will remove the buff and start a cast bar draining about 20% health from her right from the start. This will consume your crystal. Alani will be drawn to you to DPS her down. Her only ability Lightining Breath does 4625 to 5375 Nature damage inflicted every 1 sec. This fight is very short, and a lvl 90 in Heroic dungeon blues should have no issues. Once dead loot your mount. Her corpse will despawn in less then a minute so take those SS quick! It took 4 hours for Alani to show back up after being killed.

My Story:
Server first Alani killed 10/27/2012 at Ancestral Rise (18.72/23.13) around 1am on Grizzly Hills US.
As a lvl 90 BM Hunter, this grind took me 28 hours of farming over a three week duration. 9/10 shards from Tricksters, 1 from Golden Lotus daily bag. 7k from vendoring greens,100 plus stacks of cloth, 70 plus Spirts of Harmony (motes x10), 4 blues, and one epic ring. There were times I could of sworn the droprate had been lowered, or that I had the worse luck in the world. And other times I would get back to back shards. But I didn't quit once I started farming for at least 3-4 hours. I sometimes skipped dailies and farmed all day. Keep at it!

Now for the rep to ride her. Sighhh.

Honest Question, why is it required to be Exalted with the August Celestials to ride? Look at the Thundering Jade Cloud serpent, you don't need to be exalted with them to ride that one.

From what I can tell, alts only require The Order of the Cloud Serpent rep to ride this. It is only the character you have the mount/are getting the mount on, that needs The August Celestials (only to learn).

so more of a question than a comment, I got this today but still require exalted with august celestials to learn.

My question is if i learn this when im exalted will other chars on my account need to be exalted to ride it.
I know other characters will need exalted with cloud serpents to get the flying skill but will they also need august celestials rep? Because that would suck.

just thot i would add that u dont need to farm the gem/shards if u happen to find some poor suckers from the opposit faction killing him and u can kill htem n just steal the tag and mount like i did about an hour ago found 2 alliance fighting him on a cliff and explosive traped them to there doom and i managed to get the tag and kill it and loot the mount hope this helps anyone who has a bit of luck catching them of guard :)

Just want to say I downed Alani today on Proudmoore. Took me about a week of grinding off/on and about 5k mob kills. Got one from the daily treasure and the rest from mobs. I got one roughly every 6 to 8 hundred kills. I consider myself lucky it didn't take more kills. Still working on The August Celestials rep.

While this requires exalted with the August Celestials, it is obtainable off of Alani, like most of the other comments say. The August Celestials sell the Reigns of the Thundering August Cloud Serpent which would look identical to this mount, however it appears that the August Celestials mount is either sha-touched or imbued with some sort of thunder/ august celestial power.

Took me roughly 12 hours of farming as a Demo-tank lock specced with Harvest Life.

Just waited for the tricksters daily near Mistfall village and grinded away. Used Potions of Luck (Definetely one of the best places to use those !) so I made a lot of gold while grinding. Note that you CAN have someone from a low-pop server invite you to their realm if yours is crowded (Just cross your fingers that they have the same daily set than you ^_^).

Basically, for locks who wants to try this; Stand near the ''stairway'' and harvest life away to pull groups of tricksters to you, use Immo aura(as Dark Apo), Hand of Gul'dan to generate some fury, and harvest life as filler. I had 499 iLvL at that time, so it might be best to gear up before pulling loads of them. I was averaging groups of 20+ each pulls.

I love all the rare WOW mounts like the TLPD, Aeonaxx, Poseidus and the Camel. I spent countless weeks farming for each of these mounts until I got them. I couldn't do it without a good friend of mine, whose help was fundamental in finally getting Aeonaxx and Poseidus(I had spent 56 days camping Aeonaxx before my friend decided the help me get it and 2 days later Aeonaxx spawned next to where he was) Alani wasn't going to be different. I farmed for 1 entire week as soon as I reached level 90 until I got this mount. I was very proud. My friend told me that farming wasn't his thing and he was probably never going to go through all the effort required to get Alani.

1 month later I noticed how some Alanis were being sold for 150/250k gold around the world so I decided to farm the crystals again and sell the mount. However, my server is a small RP server and the majority of people don't even know who Alani is, some even think the mount is exactly the same as the August Celestials one and people aren't used to seeing large amounts of gold running around. I spent around 1 month trying to sell the mount for 90k only to get laughted at, spitted at, was told that "I believed in Santa Claus", "90k gold for a mount? Keep dreaming mate" and other very nasty things accompanied by some 90k copper offers. After 1 month of this, I started pondering about giving Alani to my friend.

About 1 week ago I received one offer of 60k gold for the mount. I told the guy that I would sell him the mount for that amount if 1 week later nobody else outbid him. He accepted. 1 week later his offer was still the best offer so I told the guy he had won the mount. He answered me with "sorry, my offer lowered to 50k". I told him goodbye and gave Alani for free to my friend. I guess you guys can guess how excited he was when he heard the news :) The other guy wasn't very happy, too bad for him, shouldn't have lowered the bid. I think such a beautiful mount must stay with only those that truly deserve it and my friend proved to be worthy of it through all the help he gave me.

5.2 update... Skyshards are bind on account. Mailed the 6 from my pally to my warrior who had four. Combined them to make 1 Sky crystal. Personally I'm not fond of cloud serpent mounts, wondering if the reins can be looted to anyone in my group when defeated?....

You only need to be exalted with The August Celestials on ONE of your characters. You have to LEARN Reins of the Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent on that character then ALL you characters ONLY need to be exalted with Order of the Cloud Serpent to ride it. Don't make the same mistake I did and get exalted on other characters with The August Celestials for no reason! Lol

While this requires exalted status with the August Celestials to learn, it does not require it to ride the mount. Meaning that you can learn the mount on a character that is exalted, then ride it on a character that is not exalted. However you do still need to be exalted with the Order of the Cloud Serpent to ride this or any other cloud serpent mount.

Patch 5.4.0 - Comprehensive Skyshard farming guide for the Siege of Orgrimmar and above

So. With 5.4.0, the Vale sort of went to s**t and as a result, many prime farming spots were lost for Skyshards, as well as the fear that they may become even less obtainable due to the destruction of a large portion of land and the loss of mobs.

So lets get the basics out of the way.

Yes, Skyshards still drop.
No, I don't believe the new Sha in the zone drop them.
Yes, there will be a lot of competition.

My Skyshards.

What a freaking ordeal. The first 4 were pre 5.4.0, the others grinded in Winterbough glade over a period of 36 hours in 4 hour sessions.

1) Treasures of the Vale
2) Stonebark Trickster
3) Thundermaw
4) Thundermaw (Two dropped in the same pack and were AoE looted. Maybe a mob can drop 2, maybe not. Such luck has never been observed before)
5) Painweaver
6) Painweaver
7) Conqueror
8) Painweaver
9) Conqueror
10) Thundermaw (Final shard. 02/03/2014 at 17:53)

Farming Areas

There are two primary farming spots and on a heavily populated server they will be -extremely- popular, so be prepared to move on or wait for them to pass through on their own accord. These areas are:

Winterbough Glade.

My spot of choice. Quick respawns on Painweavers and Conquerors and plenty of passing Thundermaws make for ideal farming, especially if you're an AoE capable class. Large and openspaced with numerous Mogu clumped in groups of 5-6. This is where I farmed 6 of my 10 shards.

GuoLai ruins and Halls.

Not...Too bad? If we're talking about the actual halls, there's more of a run between groups than at Winterbough and numerous rooms. The Mogu here seem to have a slowerr respawn timer than at Winterbough, especially in the halls themselves, and the ruins around the halls are no different. I'd recommend coming here just for a change of scenery or if competition at the glade gets too intense.

Either way, if you can choose Winterbough, do so. But with the presence of too many people (Two people alongside yourself is too many.) go to the halls and clear them on a room by room basis.

If you can AoE pull, do so. They'll respawn in no time whatsoever, however be wary that the Conqueror leash is quite small, and they have a horrible tendency to reset after their leap ability and run all the way back to where they were. The Painweavers will also stand on the spot and channel Torture Mind, leaving them stationary. Interupt if you can but don't worry if not as at higher gear levels (Anything above 500) it does barely anything. Finally, when you have them AoEable, don't stand still as both mobs will summon a pool on the floor that, while neglible at one pool, deals nasty damage when stacked up by many mobs.

Time taken

To give you a brief idea of how many kills you may have to make, I'll put it into context.

It took me near enough exactly 36 hours.
I'd kill roughly 7 Mogu per minute, pulling them all into Lights Hammer. You can probably do better.
So per hour, I kill 420 mogu as a rough estimate, not accounting for other farmers, afk breaks, etc.
I did this in 36 hours, in 4 hour bouts a night, five nights a week.
I killed, to obtain my mount, 15120 as a near estimate. Seems about right once you account for passing Thundermaw packs which I wholley reccomend murdering.

Anyone who wants to loot the mount MUST tag the dragon during the fight--simply being in party in the area is not enough! I painstakingly collected the Sky Shards this weekend so that we as a guild could give the mount to our RL after our Realm First Heroic Garrosh Hellscream kill. We all grouped up and took it down, but because our RL didn't get a shot in, he wasn't able to loot the mount.

We contacted a GM to fix this, but they said their hands were tied. Blizzard needs to empower the GMs to do the right thing sometimes, even if it means bending the loot rules.

If you are planning to sell or gift the Alani mount, make sure your friend tags it!

Does anyone know that if after you killed her the first time you would be able to kill her again? In the way that the skyshards will still drop after you killed her?

They are getting alot cheaper now when WoD is closing in , i managed to pick one up for only 15k gold. Well worth the money in my opinion , since farming it could possible take months.

Found these reins on the BMAH this morning. Opening prices was 35,000g, which is much more expensive than buying an Ala'ni kill. I'm, not sure how the price of those kills has been affected in WoD, but it should still be much cheaper to simply buy someone's kill rather than bid on the reins.
