Next generation of meta gems:

The Burning Crusade - Earthstorm Diamond & Skyfire Diamond (added in 3.0.1.; still ilvl is 70)
The Wrath of the Lich King - Earthsiege Diamond & Skyflare Diamond (ilvl 80)
Cataclysm - Shadowspirit Diamond (ilvl 85)
Mists of Pandaria - Primal Diamond (ilvl 90)

All gems can be made by the alchemists.

You learn this transmute recipe through discovery, but you are required to have alchemy skill of 600 before you can discover it.

With the requirement gems to make by alchemy it can be quite expensive.

2xVermilion Onyx
2xWild Jade
2xImperial Amethyst

Those gems can be made by alchemys and by prospect with a low drop, but still can be expensive 'cause of the requirement of Golden Lotus on transmutes

One of the easiest ways to make gold in MoP, the diamonds sell for 800g on my server.

Figured I'd throw this up here in case some people didn't know this. Jewelcrafters are able to make primal diamonds as well now. The recipe is a worldwide drop in Pandaria. The mats are also very reasonable. It just requires prospecting nodes and getting green type gems which is what you get every time you prospect.. 5 of each color and a spirit of harmony. That's all.

Despite what alchemists may have feared at first, the introduction of the new legendary meta gems has done nothing to reduce the demand for primal diamonds. Quite the opposite; a new legendary meta gem costs five primal diamonds. The demand for cut primal diamonds is bound to go down, but the demand for uncut one will only increase as people progress through tier 16 and replace their old helmets.

You need Pandaria level jewelcrafting in order to see this receipe drop. I did not see it until I leveled up my jewelcrafting.

Just made this account just so i could put this comment because I couldn't find the answer to this anywhere else. As of patch 5.4, what is the easy way to farm the gem cut recipes for level 90 Jewelcrafters? I figured out what was easiest for me. I farmed Mogu inside Ancient Guo-Lai Halls in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms (They have a chance to drop a recipe) for the Ancient Guo-Lai Keys (Not too bad of a drop) to open the chests which have a decent drop rate for the recipes. I found this to be the quickest way to get them since farming useless dungeons wasn't fast enough for me.

I may have been alone on this but I leveled my Jewelcrafting at level 90 not as I leveled so I didnt get the benifit of finding recipes while leveling, whoch is why I needed a quick way to get a few recipes. In all seriousness though the chests in this area dropped a recipe at least 1/3 of the time. Of course though the chance lowers a bit once you start getting to the point of learning all the recipes, but, in my opinion, its still faster than dungeons.

Another bonus is if you need/want Golden Lotus reputation the dailies take you straight to here and also killing these guys gives you rep as well.

My husband found a primal diamond while prospecting black trillium. I didn't even know that was possible, and this page does not include a "Prospected from" tab. It must be incredibly rare.
