caught with 1/5 droprate @ 787 fishing in the vale of eternal blossoms. (got golden carp, emperor salmon and krasarang paddlefish as well).

edit: swapped to 75 lure and was able to catch @ 712 fishing as well. got greys though with/out a lure @ 637.

You can fish this from open water in Vale of Eternal Blossoms, however you need 825 skill in fishing so that 0% of your catches will be junk. OR you can fish from pools in Vale of Eternal Blossoms successfully with just skill of 1.

I imagine there'll be quite a demand for this fish seeing how it is an ingredient for both the 10 (Pandaren Banquet) and 25 (Great Pandaren Banquet) man versions of the best MoP feasts.

i got 600 fishing skill +105 and i caught that in open water in Vale of Eternal Blossoms my fishing buddy gives 15.1% for 10 stack ,drop rate. :)

After searching various waters in Vale of Eternal Blossoms for schools of Jewel Danio. I decided to just fish in open water (coords: 71, 58).

4 Sharpened Fish Hook later - approximately 40 min. Fishing Buddy had recorded following results:-

23% Jewel Danio (27)
34% Golden Carp (42)
12% Krasarang Paddlefish (14)
5% Emperor Salmon (~8)

22% greys, 28 failed casts/attempts.

Fishing Buddy does indeed detect a fishing skill of 825 to have 100% chance for fish in this area. With my 727 fishing skill I was at 77%

Edit: Some time ago Blizzard made some changes to fishing. One of which is that you won't catch junk. Another is the Fish of the Day. That's probably how you should catch your fish now. Keep an eye on which is the fish of the day (the NPC is at Halfhill by the stream).

People tend to overfarm the pools for these guys on my server. This means the pools eventually respawn as Emperor Salmon or Redbelly Mandarin and the Jewel Danio pools become difficult to find. If you can't find the in pools, you need to fish the other pools in order to force them to respawn.

As far as I can tell, the answer is you CAN get to 825. The maximum skill I'm calculating as being possible is 830. Here's the breakdown:

Maximum unassisted fishing skill is 600
Heat-Treated Spinning Lure +150
Arcanite Fishing Pole +40
High Test Eternium Fishing Line +5
Boots of the Bay +15
Lucky Fishing Hat or Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat +5
Enchant Gloves - Angler +5
Captain Rumsey's Lager +10

It should also be noted that four of the items listed above (Arcanite Pole, Fishing Line, Boots, and one of the hats) are obtained from the Stranglethorn Fishing Derby. The pole can only be obtained by coming in first. The boots can be obtained from coming in first or second ~~as well as first in the Kalu'ak derby~~. The fishing line is obtained by coming in first, second, or third or turning in a Dezian Queenfish. A Lucky Fishing Hat comes from turning in a Keefer's Angelfish.

In 5.2, the daily event "Fish of the Day" will be added. One of the following nine locations will have this event going on. Each location has a specific type of fish that is quite plentiful to catch. In the case of the Jewel Danio event, Mad Qao Pao periodically throws coins into the water (screenshot attached).

Woods of the Lost, The Jade Forest: Jade Lungfish. Special pools are called Glowing Jade Lungfish because Sprite Dragons shoot arcane bolts at them.
Fields of Niuzao, Townlong Steppes: Redbelly Mandarin. Special pools are called Crowded Redbelly Mandarin which makes sense due to the tiny pond they spawn in.
Stormstout Brewery, Valley of the Four Winds: Emperor Salmon. Special pools are called Brew-Frenzied Emperor Salmon, which makes sense based on their proximity to the brewery.
Krasari Falls, Krasarang Wilds: Krasarang Paddlefish. Special pools are called Swarm of Panicked Paddlefish, most likely due to the Goblin NPC throwing dynamite at them.
Mad Qao Pao, Vale of Eternal Blossoms: Jewel Danio. Special pools are called Glimmering Jewel Danio Pool, since Mad Qao Pao, a very blingy Pandaren, periodically makes wishes and throws coins into the pool.
Binan Village Coast, Kun-Lai Summit: Spinefish. Special pools are called Sha-Touched Spinefish and the water has an oily appearance.
Sri-La Village, The Jade Forest: Reef Octopus. Special pools are called Reef Octopus Swarm and baby octopus run around the docks.
Gokk'lok Shallows, Dread Wastes: Giant Mantis Shrimp. Special pools are called Tangled Mantid Shrimp Cluster, as "Stuffed shrimp" sharks and seagulls periodically eat them.
Master Snowdrift's Pagoda, Peak of Serenity: Tiger Gourami. Special pools are called Tiger Gourami Slush, and nearby trainees cast blue bolts at them.

Mad Qao-Pao doesn't mean any harm. Truly, he doesn't. He heard that the pond in front of the Mogu'shan Palace granted wishes, you see...like a wishes well.

And...well...the poor guy has more gold than wit. Last I heard, he's been dumping gold into the water...hoping to become king of the world!

Sadly, Jewel danio's favorite treats are fireflies that fly low on the water. The glimmer of the coins lures them out in droves.

Hopefully the poor things aren't swallowing too many coins. Today's the day to get Jewel Danio if you want, though. You may even find a couple of coins yourself.

The waters of The Vale of Eternal Blossoms is full of schools of these, I found about 25 schools in my search for Redbelly Mandarins. Obviously had I been searching for Jewel Danio then I would have found lots of Redbelly Mandarin instead...

Sadly, the waters of the Vale are drained in the upcoming Siege of Orgrimmar patch, so they shall be moved to the Timeless Isle, reeled in from Mossgreen Lake and other water sources.

With the lakes and rivers in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms drained of water, the Cloud Serpents carried little buckets of Jewel Danio and relocated them to the Timeless Isle so they can thrive once more.

At 11pm Eastern Time, on Bleeding Hollow realm, every possible spawn point of these fish, near the Golden Lotus Quartermaster, is currently up, and it's pretty hilarious to witness lol. Not sure what is causing this, and wonder if any other realms are experiencing similar circumstances.

EDIT: ah...they are moving. That's why the waters are flooded. Problem solved lol.

at the pool behind the Emperor on Timeless isle I spotted one of the large pools and started fishing and wham after a stack of jewel danio the rare spawned. Krakanon. Was shocked as I wasn't expecting it at all. Lucky someone came to help me lol

With 600 fishing skill, I got 5 in Whitepetal Lake, along with a ton of Golden Carp and a few Karasarang Paddlefish and Emperor salmon. No buffs, except the +20 from Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole. You just need patience.

Vale of Eternal Blossoms - Jewel Danio
The lake on the Ancestral Rise; 22:17; with a fishing skill if 500, a pole with +10, and shiny baubles. There were NO pools in the lake yet with the above equipment, in 6 minutes I caught 5 Danio, 15 Carp, and 1 Emp Salmon.

yep, the picture doesn't lie. I found the pools I needed right behind the big celestial court in the pond. It was easy and simple. :D
