This is the common ink of Cataclysm, like ink of the sea in WotLK. It can be traded for any lesser common ink (including ink of the sea) in a 1:1 ratio. It can also be traded in a 10:1 ratio for the Cataclysm and WotLK rare inks, inferno ink and snowfall ink. All Cataclysm herbs should drop the pigment to create this ink, (ashen pigment) as well as sometimes dropping burning embers, the pigment for inferno ink.

...and it is here the thing comes in - the herbs are not yet avilable so the poster above has a point.

You can´t trade ink for ink at the moment due to that the herbs are "coming" in Cata.

Mousa means that you can use an herbalist to go farm the lower level herbs that yield the lower level materials needed to make certain glyphs. The Auction House is another option. While it does inconvenience inscriptionists by not allowing us to trade in inks for lower level inks until Cataclysm, it is NOT impossible to make glyphs until expansion. You just have to do slightly more work.

I am drowning in these. There are only oh so many Mysterious fortune cards I can make, and I've made a lot of old glyphs (they move so slowly now) and I still have more than 300 in storage and making many many more due to the new set of Darkmoon cards.

I wish there was a better use for them.

On average you will get 5 Blackfallow Ink from a stack or 0.25 Blackfallow Ink from each of:
Cinderbloom
Stormvine
Azshara's Veil
Heartblossom

And 6 Blackfallow Ink from a stack or 0.30 Blackfallow Ink from each of:
Twilight Jasmine
Whiptail

As far as I can see, this ink only has a few meaningful crafts.

The first two would be you being able to trade 10 blackfallow inks for :

sea/snowfall to do your daily Northrend reserch (or minor if you still need that).
inferno ink(s) to start making some darkmoon decks.

You could start making some of WoW's lottery tickets.
Almost forgot, the daily Forged Documents, which reward 9-28g roughly.

Other than that, the least sought after items left to make are scrolls, 1 glyph, dust, 60min buff journal, and shoulder chants (which only are needed per upgrade). However, with patch 4.3 on the horizon, you might want to hold onto these just in case they pull a quick one on Scribes and add something to be used with these inks. Always a good idea to be prepared.

i went farming today in Vashj'ir, this is my find:

i've got 49 herb stacks total (980 herbs)
of Azshara's Veil ( 30 stacks) and Stormvine (19 stacks)

yielded me 243 of Blackfallow inks and 30 of Inferno inks

As of Patch 5.0.4 this ink will NO LONGER be tradeable for lower tiers of Inscription Ink.

Only Starlight Ink, the Mists of Pandaria ink, will be accepted from the Ink Trader vendor.

As of patch 5.0.4, you can still use this ink to trade for other inks, despite what the vendor says.

Edit: The vendor now correctly displays what inks she accepts for trade.

Just to confirm and put this issue to rest now that MoP patch 5.0.5 is out: blackfallow ink is no longer the ink traders accept in exchange for other inks. It is now Ink of Dreams. With the abundance of Green Tea Leaf throughout Pandaria, arguably the most common herb in all of the known WoW Universe, it makes sense for it to be the herb currency of choice. A 30 min run in the Jade Forest (level 86 Druid herbist) netted 5 stacks (with some competition I might add) - as always your mileage may vary. So happy farming.

Note: the only viable use I have found for blackfallow ink is for the Forged Documents inscription quest which helps with leveling and/or some nice gold now and then (still only once a day, resetting at midnight ST). With the Mysterious Fortune Card (see versusvs' comment) you might get lucky, but I am under the curse of the Bliz RNG or use the card for the Fortune Cookie recipe. Scrolls do not sell (on my severs) and Dust of Disappearance sold from vendors have been greatly reduced in price, 30 - 40 s depending on rep and guild perks, (oddly still see people trying to sell it on the AH for x.x gold! - silly, greedy humans ... sadly maybe not so odd).

There's no reason to mill Cataclysm herbs in Mists of Pandaria, they're worth more alive than dead. You can't make money worth the trouble from this ink anymore.

For those of you looking for the best possible location for any herbs that can be milled into Ashen Pigment, consider this:

Azshara's Veil: Shimmering Expanse: 90 Nodes
Cinderbloom: Deepholm: 429 Nodes
Heartblossom: Deepholm: 994 Nodes
Stormvine: Mount Hyjal: 88 Nodes
Twilight Jasmine: Twilight Highlands: 737 Nodes
Whiptail: Uldum: 145 Nodes

Deepholm is the obvious choice for your node hunt at 1,423 Nodes in this zone.

Note for wow professions levellers - you can't mill heartblossom until 450 inscription. Cinderbloom or Stormvine is your choice to make this ink, as you can mill them at 425.
