That aside, nice to see an attainable fishing pole that is comparable to the Arcanite Fishing Rod from the fishing contest. And I am guessing this will be purchasable from a rep vendor for the faction.

A very nice alternative to the Arcanite pole if you have trouble winning or get attacked a lot while attempting to win the contest (I.E. PVP server) plus a lot of people will prefer to Rep Grind a faction then try to win the contest

and what with the fishing lines either the +3 or +5 not to mention Captain Rumsey's Lager this is better for the more common angler but I'm sure the diehard fishermen will have this and the arcanite pole

not to mention its not a bad melee weapon

It's equivalent to BOTH fishing tourney items, but with the added advantage of not having to give up a trinket slot for the hook (and there shouldn't be a 30 second wait time for the water breathing to kick in like the hook has). Kind of sad to see that the arcanite pole has an extra 5 fishing on it, but that's a small enough change that it shouldn't matter much.

One nice thing about the underwater breathing feature of this very fine pole is that always-on underwater breathing is now available to rogues and paladins, who can't equip staffs like the Hydrocane. I don't think deathknights can either, so that's one more class who will like this (especially as deathknights will have better things to do than fetching hydrocanes, no doubt).

Similar but not equivalent. Arcanite Fishing Pole still has +5 fishing which can definitely make a difference when fishing, depending on your skill and where you are. Also, the Hook of the Master Angler also increases your swim speed in addition to giving you underwater breathing.

Personally, I am glad that the tournament fishing pole is still better.

Ya, that ring is not practical in any sense of the word for what you get, consider how cheap water-breathing potions are (and how little you use it). Even if hypothetically an entire instance was underwater, using a handful of a water-breathing elixirs would be easier than doing that quest chain. So unless you already have the ring, I see no point in trying to get it.

It's a cool pole with a cool feature. That's all. Is there better? Sure. But this is way easier to get.

It's funny that this fishing pole isn't better then the Arcanite Fishing pole.

For one, this item has an item level of 200, which is 180 item levels higher then the arcanite fishing pole, It's also an epic quality item. It's absolutely stupid that it isn't better then the arcanite fishing pole. So what? the higher the item level the more dps on the fishing pole? that's it? Why can't it have +40 or +50 fishing skill.

In my opinion, they ought to keep the Fishing Extravaganza as it is now, but have a quest in Northrend to allow an upgrade of the Arcanite pole. This would provide for a new level of pole, without punishing those who have already managed to win the tournament. Since there are about 160 people per realm, maximum, who have won this pole, I think that it should still be the top available, and a visible mark of your fishing dedication and skill, especially with the Achievement that requires having won.

Heck, make the quest a Northrend Fishing Tour, much like the one from Nat Pagle, so that the upgrade isn't simply given to the holders of the Arcanite poles.

I do agree, though, that we need an upgraded pole.

The only way to "grind" rep with The Kalu'ak is through questing, either one-offs or dailies, there's no way you'd get this at a 'low level.'

Agreed! When I saw that this pole allowed for underwater breathing, I saw it as an opportunity to reclaim a bag slot by replacing my Hydrocane and my Big Iron Fishing Pole. The best part about the Big Iron pole is that it doesn't soulbind, so it's going to my hunter alt.

It's not like we have to worry about drowning much anymore with a 3-minute breath timer, but I'm curious to know what Blizzard has in store for us air-breathers in the new expansion....

Due to the ease with which you can get reputation with the Kalu'ak, expect to see tons of players running around with this; the additional equip bonus is nice, and it's obviously targeted at folks who haven't won the STV contest.

i'm so close to getting this, the only annoying thing is that you only get 1500 rep a day with these guys after you do all the one off qs so you can only do the 3 dailies so it'll still be 10 days before i can get this.

From what i have seen, there are only 2 daily quests for the Kalu'ak, each giving 500 reputation.

Though with quests in Borean Tundra, Howling Fjord and the Dragon blight, with only 1 or 2 days of daily questing mixed in, i was revered and about 2k towards exaled.

As for the rod selling for 25g, last i checked (with my friendly rep discount) it was over 100g so price given may be wrong

Kalu'ak Reputation is gained ONLY through Questing, this means that low level character won't be able to get this pole as weapon ;-)
So, no, your twink will not be able to get a weapon that can instant kill anyone of his level, sorry...

Here's something to think about... This fishing pole does more than twice the damage the Hand of Ragnaros can do. Funny how things like that work, eh?

You have to consider that the Hand of Ragnaros has a iLevel of 80 instead this has a iLevel of 200.
Since with a fishing pole you cannot use skills, also you don't get any strength, stamina, chance on hit or equip effect other than the fishing ones, the damage is pretty justified by the iLevel :)

Can you do enough quests to get exalted without dinging 71? Cause this item could pack quite a punch for alvl 70 twink even without special attacks and especially now that its harder to find a group for the best weapons like Apolyon,

All level 80 dungeons give Horde Expedition or Alliance Vanguard reputation by default. By wearing the appropriate tabard, you can choose to change this to Argent Crusade, Ebon Blade, Kirin Tor or Wyrmrest Accord reputation instead. There is no championing mechanic for other factions (Sons of Hodir, Kalu'ak, Oracles, Frenzyheart, etc.). Gaining reputation with those factions can only be accomplished by completing quests, including daily quests (similar to Ogri'la or Netherwing in Burning Crusade).

great fishing pole, but fishing with it, it bugs me to no end that the pole is "backwards" to my senses. eg; the pole bends toward your body, not toward the weight of the fish pulling. and while I know it's not an error, it still seems really weird. The way all the Tusker people hold it, at least they get to hold it at at about a 45'degree angle, not straight up and down like we do.

Just picked this baby up along with Pengu. Upon compairing things between it and the sword I had before picking up the pole arm they also sell I was embaressed.

After the Feral AP changes in 3.0.8 this fishing pole will give 1844 Feral AP.
Now that's really epic and easier obtainable feral weapon with such stats.

Since you can't use abilities with a fishing pole and as far as I know you use abilities through your main hand.

Theoretically, can a Titan Grip specced warrior use this for his offhand? Or does the same apply as with staffs, not usable in offhand.

On WoWhead, you can click on any special effects on an item, usually in green.

In this case, clicking "Allows underwater breathing", you are directed to a page of all of the other items which use this same ability. Which will reveal : Band of Icy Depths.

As a druid who's won the fishing contest and has kept their prized arcanite rod with eternium line in their inventory pretty much since he's gotten it, I've got no real use for this. So of course I farmed and grinded for it. The upshot is that I get a cute penguin too.
I am a little curious why the line remains slack even when you're reeling in, though.

This fishing pole is not enchantable. I tried to put Mongoose on it today and it gives the error of "Invalid target". Although I have not tried to do any other enchants I can imagine that it would yield the same result.

This may seem like a silly observation, but this weapon would be better for feral druids.

http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34198 drops in Sunwell, and note is only have 1195 ap, plus 75 from the agility, another 94 from attack power. This gives a total of 1134 AP, while http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44050 adds 1843.

Of course it's ilvl is 200, much higher than the Sunwell Staff but the fact that its requirement is 70 makes me wish there were 70 twinks.

Errr, I think the joke was lost on you mate. He was kinda point out how the Hand of Ragnaros, a legendary that can only gained via slaying a mighty Lord Elemental and his entire legion of minions is out done by a simple fishing pole use by fat fish people. :P

I've just started leveling my lev70 druid
given that a druid can still use special attacks whether it's a fishing pole or a mace, is there any reason why I shouldn't try and obtain this while leveling?
if I do all the quests, it would take about 14 days to reach exalted (of doing the dailys)

Pre-patch was my Priest Toon's best melee damage weapon, used it in BGs when going one on one vs a class that cast silence on me (Mage, Lock and Felhunter, or a Shadow Priest) or one on one vs a Disc Priest that had drained all my mana. Now almost anything is better. - sigh

this was buy far the best feral druid weapon for 70 to 80 before it got nerfed. ididnt realize it had all the feral attackpower taken away and while i was running WG people were yelling at me to put away my fishing pole took me about 4-5 deaths to realize that it was nerfed thanks blizz now i have to go find a new weapon now that i got rid of my good staff because i had gotten the pole

Just to clarify, the price of this item is currently bugged in Patch 3.1.1, it costs 52 copper at Exalted (previously 52 gold). So if you're not far off Exalted, I would work toward getting this before the price is fixed ;)

Unless my WoW is totally wacky after the latest patch (3.1.2, I think), the pole is epic once again! :) The conversion process has left it in a damaged state.

The other "rare" poles appear to be on par as well, at least the Jeweled flavor has damage about equal to this one (it's the only other rare pole I own). Alas, my level 20 rogue can no longer use his restored Big Iron Fishing Pole" since it has a level requirement (again?).

You know when you attack with it. It should give you fishing skills lol. Since it doesn't give you weapon skills :) That would be totally awesome and I do believe this fishing pole is the best. One: if you get attacked no need to change weapons really this thing got a very high Dps. Two: +30 fishing skill that's really good not the best but still good. Three: You can breathe underwater and so if you want going clamming you can. Without casting spells or changing gear. Overall great fishing pole and in my opinion overall the best in stats.

Very nice fishing pole, easy to get aswell. I was sad when i saw it lost its damage, then got it back.. still seems to do very little damage even though it says it has such high dps.. but i guess thats not the point of a fishing pole.

I just wanted to add, in response to the various comments about wether or not it is viable to use a high dps fishing pole as a weapon or that it is handy to have if you are ganked while fishing etc. If you have an addon installed such as outfitter, when you are fishing you can have your normal weapons automatically equip when in combat and unequip when out of combat, making use of stats, dps and skills. Puts all the arguments to rest although the high dps is nice to see for flavour.

If your after this fishing poles you need exalted with the Kalu'ak fraction. Not very hard just do all the quest and dailies for about 1 1/2 weeks and you get exalted. That how long it took me to achieve Exalted with them. After you finish these quest I suggest you do the 3 dailies
1st Howling Ford <The Way to his Heart> http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=11472,

and last is Borean Tundra <Preparing for the Worst> http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=11945.
The path I picked is most effecient for me to grind the Wyrmcrest dailies and lead to the less amount of time to the Oracle dailies too. If you don't know what the other 2 fraction provide here a list for Wyrmcrest items: http://www.wowhead.com/?faction=1091 <want a red dragon epic flying mount 2k> and the Oracles http://www.wowhead.com/?faction=1105 < you can buy an Mysterious egg at revered and it can hatch into Green proto-drake and other stuff>. Hope this helps out and when you throw out your pole. Everyone notice it because it much bigger then theirs lol

High Test Eternium Fishing Line +5 fishing is the best fishing enchant you can get. 2 ways to get the fishing line either from the Dalaran fishing dailies or catching Dezian Queenfish during Sunday fishing contest will get you it too. Hope this helps out.

And it gives more attack power then a lot of Naxxramas weapons.

....Can this be enchanted with Massacre as well? not entirely sure if it'd work on Fishing Poles.

Agreed, however, I believe the Arcanite pole should have an enhanced graphic as well, seeing how its stats are better than that of the Mastercraft. That's just a personal preference, though, I love the graphics of the Mastercraft and wouldn't want to go back to the boring old pole should I win the tournament, ya know?

Okay, I don't normally make posts, but I had to write this one down:

I finally got Exalted with the Kalu'ak at about 6:30 am today. As happy as I was to get the fishing pole and the penguin, it wasn't anything compared to how happy I was that the damn grind was finally over!

I had to log off to go to bed, then came back at about 2:00 pm and equipped my shiny new pole, then added the high-strength eternium fishing line. Slapped on my battered fishing hat, then went to Shattrath to fish in the lakes to see if I could get the weather-beaten journal. On a lark, I decided to do the Rokk's cooking quest and Old Man Barlo's fishing quest also, since I still needed the recipe for Skullfish Soup and Kibler's Bits, and the quest Shrimpin' Ain't Easy for the ach.

Barlo gave me Bait Bandits, which (since I could do it in Terokkar) I decided to go ahead and do anyway. Caught the blackfin darter and flew back to Barlo to turn it in. To my surprise, the weather-beaten journal was in the sack of fishing treasures he gave me!

Well, since I was feeling pretty special by now, I gathered the mats I needed for the Rokk's Revenge is Tasty quest. While up in Terokkar, I used my shiny new fish tracking ability to search out pools. After about twenty minutes of fishing, I caught Mr. Pinchy! O.O

Can it be? I asked meself as I right-clicked on Mr. Pinchy... *WHOOSH* I got the Magical Crawdad box!

Holy Cheese-whiz, Batman!

I dashed back to Shattrath to turn in the kaliri stew, and the Rokk gave me one of the recipes I still needed (Skullfish Soup). Wow! I wasn't about to question this absolutely unreal string of luck (or NOT take full advantage of it), so I returned to Dalaran. Forty minutes later, I had caught the last gold coin I needed for the Titanium Seal of Dalaran.

Today has absolutely made up for the hours-days-weeks-months of mindless, spiritless, pointless, colorless, smokeless, greaseless grinding... Carrying around smelly fish in my pocket and dodging the misdirected affections of mutant walruses... Avoiding lonely seamen on their first shore leave in centuries while retrieving Kalu'ak bottle-cap collections... Murdering wolvar mothers and kidnapping their babies to sell into Kalu'ak slavery... No more, never again, there was a light at the end of the tunnel and the cake was NOT a lie!

I'm going to see if there's any giant rats wandering the Underbelly in need of a good home, and after that, I'm going to go buy a lottery ticket. Best of luck to everyone else out there!

Huge mistake from Blizzard: this fishing pole is now obtainable for any character with maxed out fishing.
Winning the Kalu'ak fishing contest rewards you with exalted status at the walrus people faction :)
So, if a level 19 twink manages to get this done he/she will be able to buy this fishing pole.
I guess this is a new 19-49 (perhaps even 59) warrior/paladin/feral druid twink dream?
I mean, try to get near that amount of dps with any other weapon...

Uhm...what about casters? Most quests/mobs/ect I'm going underwater to kill I can kill easily enough without the Int/SP of my staff for five minutes. And in those cases, the benefit of not having to worry about breath makes up for it. And, of course, you can always equip the pole to swim, swap to your weapon to fight, then swap back to the pole to swim back.

So yeah, I don't see this as unuseful as you do. You just have to think outside the box a little. : )

Looks just like a torch (like the name suggests), so you can light the fires that will fry your fish.

Blizzard has changed the graphic on this pole, instead of being made from an animal's spine now, they changed it to wood and it just looks crappy.

So, comparing this rod (Linked here for easy comparability) to the Jeweled Fishing Pole, the only real difference is that this one also offers underwater breathing. Granted there is a higher attack on this one, but if you're using a fishing pole to fight with, you're not going to win. I just got the Jeweled one from doing my fishing daily, so I don't see any reason to purchase the Mastercraft, unless you haven't been lucky enough to get the Jeweled one yet.

The best Fishing Pole in my opinion ... -5 skill on contest pole but with a lure would you feel the difference? Unlikely and with underwater breathing on tap wherever you are...... how cool is that? Unless you are UD, and UD racials aren't so useful these days?

Also saves bag space (no need for a hydrocane) and has a super cool graphic unlike the contest poles ....sweet!

I just wanted to update something I saw in this guide… This is what I can accumulate to grant the highest Fishing Skill Level of 755:

525 Skill Level Cap (Cata)
+40 Arcanite Fishing Pole
+5 High Test Eternium Fishing Line
+150 Heat-Treated Spinning Lure (15 min Lure)
+15 Boots of the Bay (Feet)
+5 Lucky Fishing Hat or Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat (Head)
+5 Formula: Enchant Gloves - Angler (Glove Enchant)
+10 Recipe: Captain Rumsey's Lager (Drink Buff for 3 min)
525 (Skill Cap) + 230 (Added Bonuses) =
Total: 755

Now, I don’t know of anywhere in game that would require anyone to have their fishing this high, but, I wanted to update it since the only person I saw that was close had a Rank of 0.

Some fishing poles in game since patch 1.11.1 with some helpful tips:

■ Fishing Pole can buy from any trader and is a reward from Red Snapper - Very Tasty! (Alliance only), generally its used for increase fishing skill on beginning.

■ Strong Fishing Pole can buy from specific vendors in world, them can sell only one item.

■ Staats' Fishing Pole reward from A Taste for Grouper in Darkshore (Alliance only).

■ Darkwood Fishing Pole fishing low drop in some low level areas.

■ Big Iron Fishing Pole low drop from Shellfish Trap.

■ Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000 reward from Snapjaws, Lad! (Alliance side) and Snapjaws, Mon! (Horde side).

■ Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole reward from Rather Be Fishin' (Shattrath City).

■ Pandaren Fishing Pole you can get it if you are honored with The Anglers, require the Mists of Pandaria expansion.

■ Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole reward from Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme, Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme for who completed this quest before the quest trainer for Artisan Fishing was removed in 3.1.0

■ Arcanite Fishing Pole reward from world event of Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza for to first player who catch Speckled Tastyfishx40 and give Riggle Bassbait, completing Grand Prize, its is the best pole in game with high fishing skill.

■ Jeweled Fishing Pole low drop from Bag of Shiny Things (Fishing Quest Daily in Stormwind and Orgrimmar), even a lvl 10 can obtain this item, and Bag of Fishing Treasures (Fishing Quest Daily in Dalaran) you must be lvl 70 and got the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Also if you catch the Blacktip Shark but you are not the first person who completed it, you gain the bag in Better Luck Next Time.

■ Bone Fishing Pole low drop from Bag of Shiny Things, same work with Jeweled Fishing Pole.

■ Dragon Fishing Pole you can get it if you are revered with The Anglers, require the Mists of Pandaria expansion.

■ Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole can buy from Sairuk (Dragonblight) or Tanaika (Howling Fjord), you must be Exalted with The Kalu'ak, its the best pole with cool model and unique breathing underwater in game, you must have the expansion Wrath of the Lich King if you want this item.

Some itens removed or in database of game but you cant ever got:
■ Crafty's Pole this item appear in database of Lich King expansion, probably in patch 3.2 or 3.3, cannot be obtained in live realms.
■ Blump Family Fishing Pole is no longer available in game because the Gubber Blump disappear, so Staats' Fishing Pole and the Johnathan Staats replace.

Got this fishing pole tonight on this level 69 druid.

To give an idea of the damage boost this fishing pole gives over a level 69 green (of the Bandit, with 37 agility), I attacked a level 60 target dummy with no buffs. Average crits with the moves are listed below, first with the polearm, then with the fishing pole:

Mangle: 2444 --> 3737
Rake (one tick): 1550 --> 1449
Ferocious Bite (5 combo points): 12,740 --> 12,504
Shred (with bleed active): 3309 --> 4796
Ravage: 5136 --> 6133
Thrash (one tick): 1318 --> 1271
Auto-attack: 965 --> 1364

Damage for several moves actually went down, because they scale with attack power rather than base weapon damage per second. Overall damage and "burstiness" is still far superior with the fishing pole. All in all, I don't regret the grind.
