Seems like both these fish have a very low drop rate.

But I did find something out about them.
1.) They are not rare spawned pools (ie a single fish in a pool named old ironjaw). I thought that after catching around 300 fish with no luck. So having the track fish book will not help you at all.
2.) They can be caught in The Forlorn Cavern in Ironforge for Old Ironjaw or in Org for Old Crafty.
3.) There is no logic behind them, they are just very low drops. They are not like spawned mobs.
4.) Caught 300 Mud Snappers, 150 Catfish and 80 Smallfish before I got my hands on one.

Caught Old Ironjaw last night and the pool outside The Forlorn Cavern on my undead rogue...took me 462 casts and a few hours,aswell as a few corpse runs after being ganked.gonna go for the Org fish next

Took just under 500 catches to snag this. Im a hordie, so I took a few deaths on my server, Cenarion Circle, but for the most part Alliance left me alone. Like Chav, going for Old Crafty next, and maxing out my fishing skill as well.

I managed to catch one, in the pond of the mystic ward, took me 700 catches to get it, i have fished atleast another 300 fish there since, but no luck catching another one.

Tips for HORDE fishing Old Ironjaw

Fish while /sleeping to look slightly less conspicuous.
Be prepared to click "OK" on a "Looting this item will bind it to you" dialog box. This dialog box appears regardless of whether you're in a group, and if you cast again before clicking OK, you will not loot the fish.
Turn off the display of your title to make your bright red name smaller.
The easiest, most out of the way place to fish from is the Forlorn Cavern. Most alliance traffic will be coming from the West, so fish from the Southwest corner of the Forlorn Cavern. I recommend riding through Stormwind (either through the front or through the new harbor) to take the tram into Ironforge instead of the densely populated front entrance.
Bring some Elixirs of Camouflage. Most of the alliance who gave me trouble were hunters and druids who had track humanoids on. Using this elixir will reduce ganking. Edit: Or, if you are a hunter, you can use Aspect of the Beast (Thanks, Arhippa!)
Have at least 4 empty bag slots; the more you have, the better.
If you are not at max fishing skill, make sure your skill is not capped. You will probably do quite a lot of fish catching, so you may as well get skill points for it.
Be patient! It took me 943 catches to get him, which is about 4 hours of fishing. This will quite probably take you a long time, so don't set out to do it one sitting. If gankers are persistent, be prepared to log out and play another character or do something else.

I sold all my epic gear just to afford more fishing lures.... I traded my guild, sold everything in my bank. I have given up raiding and pvp and now wander the world as a lvl 70 fisherman in blue overalls. Ironjaw and Crafty have both met there ends by my own hands (rather my offhand). My mooncloth bags are overflowing with any kind of fish you could imagine... and they're raw...because one day I will trade in my rod and lures for some flint and tinder. And then i shall forever wander the world (of warcraft) as a Nomadic Cook. Untill then, you can find me chillin with "Natty P" in the marshlands in the Emerald Dream realm. Sometimes if im bored, which only happend once since im so highly medicated, I will go back in time to fish with Pagle in Old Hillsbrad, or hit up Pagles Point inside the Troll City in stranglethorn vale.

With patch 3.0.2 and the introduction of an achievement for catching both fish... I highly suspect that Blizzard responded to the constant threat of getting corpse-camped by upping the drop rate drastically on both Old Crafty and Old Ironjaw. I caught both fish in less than 300 casts each on three different characters now, the average being 253.6 total casts.

If you're not one of the lucky ones who can head into enemy territory at five in the morning when the city has 25 total people in it, this (suspected) change is a great thing.

Finally got him after two days, and 261 casts (sure as hell wasn't going to leave until I got him, because I'm Horde and getting in is a pain in the ASS). Agree with the advice to get in through the Deeprun Tram, or else you'll die a few times trying to get to a suitable place to fish.

I feel like I just earned e-p33n +345345.

No lures needed, as it's practically a starting zone fishing area. Just bring a real big drink and some snacks and prepare to slog away at it.

I seemed to have a very lucky night last night.

As I sat with a friend at the pool out The Mystic Ward. He began to get annoyed as a crowd emerged and began to fish.

Fishing is not my friend, I have 282 skill and since Achievements are around I didn't start to fish till last night. So there I was catching fish and Ding: http://www.wowhead.com/?achievement=1556

I laughed it off and continued to fish, felt like a noob but oh well that's life. 10 mins later Ding: http://www.wowhead.com/?achievement=1557

Now I began to get really excited as I only wanted to go onto 100. But to my surprise on the 57th Catch I finally caught Old Ironjaw after spending 20mins there. Yeah my friend was annoyed but come on this was something to post on trade channel, and it was only for a laugh, didn't think I would actually catch him.

Good Luck to those trying, It really is a big achievement.

I have tried all types of lures, the fishing helm, the ZG fishing pole and nothing seems to work.

I just caught this, took about 70-80 casts. A friend of mine with 17 fishing (when he started) tried to catch it as well and caught 2 with 149 casts.
Perhaps the drop rate has been indeed increased?

Trying to get old crafty tomorrow, hope I don't get ganked too much.

as horde, i was pleased to see that most of the alliance left me alone, although:

it took me 6 hours of almost contant fishing to get him, in that time a shaman got him within 5 minutes of fishin, a guild mate within 30 minutes and another guild mate within 2 hours

a note for horde, it is now harder to get into ironforge without dying as all the basic guards are level 75 that you can't easily stealth past, and theres also some level ? elites wandering about too, once you get t the cavern i recommend not leaving until you have the fish, its a complete bugger to get back there every day

For Horde trying to fish up Old Ironjaw, there is now a very easy way to get to Ironforge from Shattrath City.

Today Blizzard started the WLK prelude event with a zombie outbreak. All you have to do is become a zombie and you can take the Ironforge portal in Shattrath City. Once there shamble your way to your desired fishing spot. You will die to guards on the way, but once you die you'll be in the heart of Ironforge with no zombie debuff, leaving you free to pound your head against the wall until you catch Old Ironjaw.

My take:

I fished in forlorn cavern on a medium population server. I fished one day from 10am server time to midnight. I fished the next day from about 930am server time to about 11am server time. During this time, I was ganked 6 times, mostly between 6pm-midnight the first day. The second day, I was not ganked at all. I saw three other horde during this time, and they were a help being there since people are less likely to screw with you solo if you have more than one 70 with you.

During my entire time there, I casted 2,042 times before I got Ironjaw. It was a pain, but I'm glad I'm done.

It seems that the allies have nothing better to do than grief. I've been killed repeatedly by ranged classes at the wheel, and a few times at the Forlorn Cavern - in my first day alone. Never mind that I'm not trying to hurt them, or kill their NPC's, or impede on their fun - just trying to catch the damn rarest fish in the game.

Due to the location it's in and the rarity of the drop, I dare say this is one of the hardest achievements in the game (for Horde). Unless I got extremely lucky with Old Crafty (160 catches), it's not nearly as rare as Old Ironjaw, and the allies have two pretty decent hiding spots in Org (behind the mage trainers hut, and behind a waterfall near the BG room).

Edit: with the griefing players and the view required to see the lure, you can pretty much tell when they're coming. Only a stealth druid or rogue could avoid this, but then, it's incredibly difficult to land on the wall without hitting the lava first, revealing their position, and bringing them into melee range anyway. As soon as you see a player take any sort of action that looks like they're coming to attack you (approaching the guard rail, or going around the machinery to get LoS on you), start to logout. You can't logout mid combat, so you have to do it prematurely. If they stop, feel free to stop the logout. But if they continue their aggressive actions, just logout and wait 5-10. Afaik if you do a true logout (instead of alt+F4 terminate) you physically leave immediately, so you won't die - though you can't take any action during the logging out, and with V3 dps is very high.

Well with my dismay at my 2500 casts currently failing to yield him, I decided to run the maths.

x = 1 - 0.999^y

Where:
x = the chance of seeing one or more (that is, any outcome but 0) Old Ironjaws
0.999 = the chance of not seeing Old Ironjaw drop
y = number of samples of data

So let's take a look.

After 500 loots (y = 500), the chance of seeing at least one Old Ironjaw is 39.3%. So if you get one in less than 500 attempts, you're pretty lucky.

After 1000 loots (y = 1000), the chance of seeing at least one Old Ironjaw is 63.2%. If it takes this long, you're around the average mark.

After 2000 loots (y = 2000), the chance of seeing at least one Old Ironjaw is 86.5%. If it takes this long, you're pretty unlucky - moreso if you haven't seen it yet.

After 2500 loots (y = 2500; where I'm at now), the chance of seeing at least one Old Ironjaw is 91.8%. If it takes this long and you still don't have it... stay away from casinos; you have bad luck.

After 4000 loots (y = 4000; what I'd consider to be a breaking point for most people) the chance of seeing at least one Old Ironjaw is 98.2%. It's not a certainty, but you would have had to have run over a black cat, causing your rear vision mirror to break, all taking place under a ladder to take this long.

And there you have it. Expect around 800 or so loots before seeing him if are of average luck. The more you fish the more chance you have, but it is *never* a certainty.

Old Ironjaw and Old Crafty are NOT necessary for the Accomplished Angler !

If I remember stats, 1 - ( 0.99876 ^ n ) = p

n = number of catches
p = fraction of players that find Ironjaw in n catches

Plug in your own numbers, I'd estimate players get 180-240 catches an hour, depending on how melted their brains are. I'm at around 1400 myself, half a dozen would be asshats melted to slag by lava. Bottom line, most players won't be able to do this in one afternoon sitting, your character may very well be fishing for days.

A word of warning: If you have auto-loot on, and depend on it to actually 'loot' your fish when you catch em, this fish (like all other BOP fish) gives a warning box "Looting this item will bind it you" and you actually have to click Yes to pick it up. If you cast your lure again without clicking yes, you lose the fish!

Just be careful, would be a shame to have to catch this sucker twice just because you were in a fishing trance.

Can someone confirm whether fishing off the fake ledge in IF actually has a chance to catch old ironjaw? Anyone caught him in the lava yet?

EDIT: About 15 minutes after posting this, I hooked Ironjaw in the lava, so it is confirmed.

got him using coolguywithhair's method after about an hour/200 casts later. i just waited until late at night and tried going into the front entrance, but the lvl 75 guards saw through my stealth so i died about 4 times (counting the lava dive) going in.

with your back against the wall while you're on the invisible ledge you should hold your right mouse button to turn your character, then use your left mouse button to aim the camera to position it so that you can see the bobber.

I'm posting this in hopes that other's can avoid the mistake I just made.

I turned on auto-loot and was trying to cast and recast as quickly as possible to reduce the pain of this endeavor as much as possible. Believe it or not, I caught Old Ironjaw before I even got my "Catch 100 Fish" achievement. Problem is, I was going so fast, that before I even realized I had caught Old Ironjaw, I had already recast my next lure. Old Ironjaw is Bind on Pickup, so you have to click OK on the "Are you sure you want to loot this?" dialog -- which I didn't. Old Ironjaw went back into the water, and I haven't seen him since.

Lesson of my sad tale is to not go so fast that you drop him when you actually manage to catch him. Who knows when I'll catch him again. Good luck to all of you.

Several of my guildmates, me included, got Old Crafty in one cast while fishing for the baby crocolisk quest in Orgrimmar. Now this got me thinking it is not a coincidence, it could be a bug or something, but next time I get that croc quest, (which is available for both factions), I'm gonna go to Ironforge and try to get Ironjaw.

Maybe it won't work, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anyone to have the quest. Who knows, it can prevent you 300 casts and be ganked :)

That can be real painfull if you are bad lucky, it took me a week to catch them both, old crafty & old ironjaw.

Got old crafty after 2.300 catches in the pools@valley of spirits, took me 5 days.

Got old ironjaw today, after 600 catches in the lava of the great forge. 500 catches yesterday and no luck, today i got it in my 100th catch, a little more lucky than crafty for me...

Now, Mr. Pinchy's time i guess.

Edit: In the same night, i got Mr.Pinchy in my 50th try, really faster than i though, and i got the Avhievement completed on the first wish. My lucky day, since i´ve been fishing Mr.Pincy about 300 throws at day, along 2 weeks :)

Make sure you DO NOT move when you get him. You have to click the accept button to loot because he is bind on pickup. I accidently moved when i got him and didn't get to loot him.

Small word of advice:

If you happen to catch Old Ironjaw, remain calm. Don't do what I did and accidently click your fishing button when the "Looting this will bind it to you" box pops up.

I read about the lava method and found a slim area from the main forge spot near the turning wheels. After 500 casts in the water... I got him on my fourth or fifth cast into lava.

I don't know why this would be an exploit if they intentionally make lava fishable. It's not like it was easy to cast into the lava, it took several casts each time to get them in a fishable area.

After well over 2000 casts (mostly in the kiddie pool) I had nothing. I headed over to the lava and caught him in about 20 casts. Not sure if the lava has a higher drop rate or if I had finally beat the RNG.

Bug with Autoloot and Old Ironjaw confirmed by GM 15/11/08

I just caught him (after apx 315 casts) - but the loot pane vanished, no achievement, no fish in bag.

I contacted the GMs just in case, and had a lovely chat. Apparently there is a glitch in some clients that interacts with some addons and renders these fish unlootable if you have Autoloot on.

I thought I'd clicked out and dismissed the loot panel, but I think this was actually a bug. Blizzard are working on it.

Reccomendation is to fish with no addons turned on.

Fished him up today in the lava pool while the town was empty and everyone in Northrend. Seems to average a little more than 1000 casts , or about 4 1/2 hrs. I fished about 500 casts, my partner 500, and he got the fish. He left, so I then fished by myself for about 1000 casts, and up Ironjaw came. Appears counter returns to zero once he is fished up somewhere.

got into position at the forlorn caverns while running past a pally whos fishing. he called the entire IF down upon me. and i died while holding on to a fishing pole and is rather utterly defenceless. so i logged and await the next chance to capture this old guy

Since I didn't fancy in running in and dying. As a mage it's really simple to get to the forlorn cavern without dying.

Just to the right of this NPC there will be a ledge where you can get to the gates of ironforge without having to run along the whole mainway.

Since guards doesn't seem to be able to daze when you have shields up. Stand near the ledge, use slowing armor, mana shield and ice barrier if you got. Mount up and run inside. Turn left when you get into the gates of ironforge and run through the mystic quarter and into forlorn caverns. When you get to the water, blink and use invisibility and you'll get there without dying and before the mana shield runs out.

Guards should be slowed so they wont be able to keep up with you. They didn't manage to bash through my shield even with my RP fishing gear on sporting a massive 350 spell power. Then just /lie and have fun fishing from there on. Over 1200 casts and no fish for me sofar.

Tips for Horde players

Well I haven't caught Old Ironjaw yet, but I made it into Ironforge today with surprising ease, so I thought I'd share my tips:

-I decided to hit up the Forlorn Cavern as my spot of choice
-I went in through the front gates of IF, after taking off all my weapons and armor so they wouldn't get durability damage
-I mounted up and just kept running, and actually made it into the Forlorn Cavern before guards knocked me off my mount and I died
-Once I died (with no durability damage =D) I just ran back up. Luckily the graveyard is pretty close unlike Stormwind's
-After I resurrected I threw Aspect of the Beast on so I was untrackable (non hunters can use potions if they like) and then went into the far back corner of the pool there
-You're able to stand on a back ledge, and once I was in position I /lie to lie down. This literally puts your character under the water but you don't get a breath meter. It's as inconspicuous as you're going to get
-After that it's just a matter of patience. I intend to stay until I've snagged Old Ironjaw

This has been the most annoying part of the fishing achievements that I have done so far. I'm up to 1,000 catches in the Great Forge right now, and still no sight of him. Heres what I have gotten though:

612x Raw Longjaw Mudsnapper
200x Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish

1375 fish caught and then Old Ironjaw, a bit more than the average.

0.999^x = 0.5
x log 0.999 = log 0.5
x = log 0.999/log 0.5
x = 692.8

That means in 693 catches half of the fishermen will have seen atleast one Old Ironjaw.

Maybe it's the lava that makes him so tough eh? Fished in the great forge, caught him after about 15 fish. Was it a fluke? Maybe, but that's two people that caught him quickly after fishing in the lava.

Been trying this today myself. I did the dragonblight quest line up to the part where you go to Org. - and then waited till crocs in the city popped up for me in shatt. Went to the clone of Org. and got Old Crafty in about 5-10 mins ( about 30 casts ) - so either I got lucky or it's confirmed.

As for Old Ironjaw, I went to the real IF and just sat at the forelorn cavern casting for an hour with no luck.

Some notes about both locations: You catch a baby croc every time. Having the quest makes it 100% drop rate by the looks of it in IF, SW, and Org. Old Ironjaw on the other hand, might not be affected by the same bug Old Crafty is by having the quest. Just to give you an idea of casts: I went from 387-388 in Org. 388-391 fishing in IF so far.

Some tips: Turn autoloot off, and turn on loot window to mouse cursor. Hotkey your cast line. Get in the habit of waiting 2-3 seconds before pressing the hotkey. Breath easy and be patiant. Last but not least, do this a little bit at a time.

Staying calm and focused is the key to not missing your catch!

I went here http://www.wowhead.com/?maps=1537:485248 and since im a tauren druid i just stealthed all the way to that back corner and took all my gear off and /laydown and nobody could see my body i also took my title off so it shortened my name then about 3 alliance were fishing one of then saw me i stealthed for 3 mins then she went away the two there were either really retarded or im really good because from there i sat there got about 460 http://www.wowhead.com/?item=6289] before i got old ironjaw but it was worth it because i also need the 1000 fish achievement and it got me way up there..hope that helps...

Gained about 45-55 skill points in fishing doing this and even though I am horde, I did not get killed or even attacked once. Guess it pays to work the night shift =-)

Just trained Fishing on my Death Knight, caught 2 Old Ironjaws within 3 minutes of each other around 5:30 A.M. Fishing was only at skill level 45 I was using a lure.

I decided to start fishing a few weeks ago because I want to try to get as many achievements as possible, and I knew fishing would take the most dedication and patience.

I went from 1-314 skill all in Ironforge, but finally found Ironjaw after about 1150 casts.

I did about 900 in the Forlorn Cavern, 50 near the Great Forge, and 100 near the Mystic Ward before finally catching him.

I should note that two of my guildies also had similar luck near the Forlorn Cavern and Great Forge, but all caught him relatively quickly (<200 casts) near the Mystic Ward.

Obviously nobody knows the 'best' place to catch him, and it's more than likely possible anywhere inside houses him, but based on this I would suggest at least starting out near the Mystic Ward as it just may have a higher chance to yield him, and if not nothing bad came of it. :)

Was waiting for a raid to form in IF today and I got bored, so I decided to level my horrifically low fishing... fished up old Ironjaw going from 51-57 Fishing. Pleasant little surprise. Was in the Mystic Ward pool, but it's more likely than not just random chance.

It took me about 2100 catches to get him, don't expect to do this in one sitting, it took me 4 days and multiple sittings, thankfully being ganked was rare.
I fished in the forlorn cavern, rumors of the drop rate being higher in the lava are false, his drop rate is consistant among the three available areas to fish from.

Lures do not help, wearing fishing gear does not help, it is purely luck based, you do not need to be on the fishing quest.

I entered Ironforge via the Tram from Stormwind
I fished in the Great Forge Lava (south lava pit)
I got Ironjaw in 311 casts.
I didn't get ganked once. Some lame hunters tried sending their pets in the lava after me but other than that it was easy sailing.
I did find that having my toon /sit while casting helped avoid having to re-rotate/position him after a few casts.
Also - I can confirm that you can loot the Baby Crocolisk for the daily here if you have the quest.

Was pretty fun all in all - sounds like I had a fairly easy time of it compared to some of you (with 500-1000 cast stories).

I started fishing for the old bugger with a base skill of 376. By the time I caught Ironjaw I had just rolled over to 444 fishing skill and it was at or around my 741st catch in the Forlorn Cavern. No man should have to see that many Long Jaw Mud Snappers in one sitting! There are no shortcuts for this fish, I tried 'em all. This is just plain old cast and bobber watch for hours on end. If you are Horde you may never want to look at a rod again if you pull this one off. You are left with a calm sort of serenity afterwards. You feel like theres no fish out there ya can't catch once ya put Old Ironjaw in your bags... after which i promptly slaughtered two ally lowbies and hearthed the hell outta that horrid pit in the side of a mountain!

I also knocked out the 1000 Fish acheivment while I was working on it. Man I hate IF!

the spot inside the forge between the wheel and the wall worked great for me as horde! I caught it after about 300 or so casts. No alliance bothered me except one guy who felt the need to make a level 1 alt to complain since he couldn't figure out how to reach me :)

Also note you can't get a camera angle if you fish from the north wheel. I tried for about 10 minutes to get an angle since I saw another horde player in that spot. I assumed the north wheel was fine but I was unable to see my lure. I moved to the south wheel and it was extremly easy to see the lure in the lava. Good luck members of the horde!

Anyone knows if there is the same bug with this fish like there was with Old Crafty, that if you hadn't gotten the achievement you could not loot it, don't know if there is anyone else that experienced this bug or it just was 3 of my chars that did. would be irritating to find out when trying to catch this sucker.

Crocolisks in the City!

Before having this quest, i fished up 790 fish in ironforge without catching ironjaw.
I obtained the quest, and without looting the baby crocolisk, i caught ironjaw on my 22nd cast.

Coincidence? I'll let you decide.

The "Crocolisks in the City" bug that allows you to catch Old Crafty easily also works for Old Ironjaw. However, it only works on the small pool in The Mystic Ward. This makes it much harder for horde players to do.

I managed to get him on my 10th cast or so and it acted the same way as Old Crafty does when trying to loot him with the crocolisk in your inventory.

I don't believe using the fishing Crocodile daily has any effect on Ironjaw like it does with Old Crafty. I caught crafty on my alliance and horde characters in 2-8 catches; fishing skill was irrelevant.

I caught over 270+ fish on my horde Deathknight in Ironforge with the Croc daily and did not fish up Ironjaw. I tried the Forlon Cavern, the Mystic Ward's pool, and fishing in the lava behind the water wheel. I caught about 200 on my alliance character with the daily in the same areas and did not get him.

To my knowledge the daily quest bug does not work for Ironjaw on alliance or horde - it only works for Old Crafty.

If anyone can prove me wrong and provide proof that would be awesome. If not, prepare to spend some time fishing in Ironforge!

I just finished the Artisan fishing quest and I figured I'd get some skill points.

Sat down in front of the TV to fish in Ironforge.

I'd just like to inform everyone that the daily quest "Crocolisks In The City" has absolutely NO EFFECT on your chances to catch Old Ironjaw. He's just a tough fish to catch.

So... after almost 2 years of sitting on 22 fishing skill I decided to level it since we've cleared all content and I was terribly bored... Got myself a pole and some lures and started in the Ironforge Mystic Ward... Got this baby before I got the 100 Fish achievement. And if that wasn't good enough I got 2 (two) more before I got the 250 fish achievement. Now I don't know what to do with all 3. :D

Edit: I'm fishing from the "secret" wheel spot... I have been slow to switch back from other windows on occasion and missed a few catches but for the sake of my sanity I'm not considering that old ironjaw could have been one of those. :(

It should be noted (especially for horde) that the "Crocolisks in the City" trick appears to work on Old Old Ironjaw just like it does with Old Crafty

For those unfamiliar with the "trick" I'm talking about, it involves obtaining the quest "Crocolisks in the City" from Old Man Barlo Just outside Shattrath City in Terokkar Forest.

You then travel to Origmar (for Old Crafty) or Ironforge (for Old Ironjaw) and start fishing.

Apparently, being on this quest seems to greatly increases your chances of fishing up ether of these very rare fish.

However, it seems the quest needs to be incomplete for this trick to work. So if you catch a crocolisk before Old Ironjaw, Just throw it back, or destroy it, and keep fishing.

You may catch several Crocolisk before Old Ironjaw shows himself.
(I threw back about 3 of them before I got him)

But with a little bit of persistence, he should show himself.

I know the whole idea sounds kinda unlikely, but tried it based on other peoples advise, and caught Old Crafty in the time it took me to get from 304 fishing skill to 316 & Old Ironjaw in the time it took to get from 316-319.

So it seems to work.

Also, as others have mentioned, the reason you want to be carefull with auto-loot and re-casting is because both fish are BOP and trigger the "do you want to loot this item" window.

So stay sharp, and don't panic when he finally pops up.

Due to the BoP dialog with Old Crafty and Old Ironjaw, I have installed NoBoPWarning from curse gaming to remove the BoP dialog while I am fishing.

IMPORTANT: make sure you turn this off for instances and raids or youll get in big troub.

A couple hours into doing Ol'Crafty I checked WoWhead and used the Crocolisk daily trick. I still had the quest a few days later when I went to Ironforge for Ironjaw. Low and behold I must have gotten within 20 casts, on my second Baby Crocolisk.

Despite what Above posts claim, I magically had better luck using that silly Quest method on BOTH of these rare fish.... go figure, it won't hurt :)

**NOTE** - Yes, i realize this is quite long. If you want to get to the good stuff, simply read the underlined paragraph. I just figured i would post the entire thing so people could see exactly how i caught him, and share in my excitement.

I recently moved to a new server, and have nothing to do, so i decided to start leveling my long neglected secondary professions. I was reluctant to level Fishing until after i had got to 375 First Aid, and then Cooking, and when the time came to actually start leveling fishing i hated the thought of it.

I'm exactly sure when i leveled it, but i was already at 150 fishing, which was rather encouraging. I decided that if i was going to do something as mind numbing as leveling fishing, i wanted to get something awesome out of it, so i chose to try fishing up Old Ironjaw. Since i hadn't leveled fishing since long before the achievement system was implemented, my fish caught was at 0. I started off in the Forlorn Cavern, and fished up somewhere around 150 fish before moving to the lava for another 50 fish and then moving back to the Forlorn Cavern and fishing up another hundred fish, giving me a total of 300 for the day. This put me at 225 Fishing.

At this point, i was so mind numbingly bored that i simply could not continue, so i went to a couple PUGs (got no loot btw :(). After the PUGs i decided to go do the quest to get Artisan Fishing. Once completed, i headed back to Ironforge to give Old Ironjaw another go.

I spent the better of an hour fishing because i was distracted by several other things, but something soon caught my attention. Normally i cast, click the bobber, let the loot screen pop up while i reply to a tell or to someone in guild chat, then pick up my loot and repeat, however after about 75 fish (375 total for the day) i noticed that my loot had a green name instead of the usual white. To my amazement, it was Old Ironjaw! I simply could not believe that i had caught him so quickly. After reading all the horror stories about how long it took, and seeing Jaxsonbateman's calculations on the percentage to catch Old Ironjaw after so many loots, i expected to be fishing for the next few days, but no, i had caught him much more quick then i anticipated!

The words of wisdom i offer to those hoping to catch Old Ironjaw are this: Don't give up simply because you are at 5000 loots, and have yet to see him even once. The time it takes to catch him is nothing compared to the excitement you will experience when you finally do! Although i caught him very quickly, i didn't expect to, and i planned to stand around fishing as long as i needed to so i could catch him. Just stick with it guys! :)

I, on the other hand, will be sneaking my way into Orgrimmar to fish up Old Crafty =D

I went to the north wheel on my first attempt but try as I might I could not get a camera angle to see the lure. Fishing the south wheel now without any problems.
Approaching my level cap at 375 after over 900 fish so will have to port Dalaran and start again once trained.

You can fish in the lava in IF, not just the running lava.. it's gotta be the lava that is beneath it. It's directly under the flight master and it's more dark then the other smelting lava.

First cast today when I logged in and Old Grumpy was mine, err I mean Ironjaw >:)

Do NOT be in a group while fishing. Ironjaw is BoP, so if you are in group it will say: "This item will bind to you", and if you're to fast and press your fishing keybind before you have pressed accept, you will lose it. I cutted wrists all night.

Started fishing in Ironforge at 1 fishing, in Forlorn Caverns. MIght've fished 10 fishes before I realized I was at 75, so I went to go train and continued fishing. At perhaps 85, I decided it'd be more fun to fish in the lava at the great forge. So I stood on the rim of the eastern smelting pool and cast into the magma.

Anyway, I got Old Ironjaw at 102 fishing. I might have been really lucky, or the droprate might be a lot better in the lava.

In any case, happy fishing.

Priests can benefit from the free levitate glyph whilst fishing and can thus levitate on water for as long as they wish. creating a macro ensures you will never fall.

refreshes levitate every time they cast
applies generally ofc too but its handy being able to sit at the back of the forlorn cavern pool.

Caught him on a quiet monday morning. There weren't even PvP-ing allies at the gates and to my sheer luck and amusement, 2 rogues joined me inside to cause mayhem and distract everyone in Ironforge. Took me exactly 380 casts to catch him. I was detected twice, but being a druid I could stealth and hide.

So, no real new tips from me, except that the "distraction method" worked quite well in keeping the allies away from me. Only works on very low hours, of course. And it gave me something to watch while fishing: seeing the buffs and debuffs on my party members, I could vividly imagine the fight, hehe.

As Horde, in a low traffic hour (early in the morning) had no trouble. Got killed once by a rogue on the way, only a couple players saw me and stopped when i was fishing, logged for 15-20 mins and they were gone. As a druid i could stealth in easily from stormwind using the tram, after fishing there and doing stockades for the achievements. Taking armor off is advisable to avoid high repair bills for classes that cant stealth (even for who can stealth, couse stuff happens), since you will die a few times on the way. Took me round 360 casts to catch ironjaw. Blew up luck for a whole month xD
Up to 1500 casts and Old Crafty still laughs at me. I have a feeling itll be today...

Sampling is from the geometric distribution, so says the almighty Wikipedia, which measures the number of trials until the first success. He is implicitly assuming the drop rate is 0.1%, or p=0.001. I couldn't find any numbers on it, but there are numbers for Old Crafty, and it says 0.2%. That'll make a huge difference.

This is not a symmetric distribution, so z=50% does not correspond to the average number of catches. For the average, simply do 1/p, so, 1000 catches if p=0.1% and 500 catches if p=0.2%. It's not a very useful number because the standard deviation associated with such a low probability is almost 100%. So there can be a lot of variability between different people.

694 fish to get Ironjaw - max fishing used no lures, was in forlorn cave. Saw one person next to me get Old Ironjaw at the same time they hit 50 total fish acheivement. I'm not sure how many of the 50 were cast there but I would guess all of them.

I caught mine after 16 catches in the Forlorn Cavern. I posted the acheivement in Trade Chat and I kept getting whispered "Wtf?" or "Congrats!". I had the following in my inventory after catching him:

My fishing skill was 560, I was using the Weather-Beaten fishing hat, Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole, and some Captain Rumseys Lager.

After all your elaborate comments on strategies of fishing and drop rates, I feel inadequate by saying this: caught Old Ironjaw at my 1st attempt, 4th reel...

Old Crafty, however, did not yield so easily and after 7h of fishing and evading the horde, I have yet to catch him.

On a side note: I don't think the fishing skill is of any significant relevance in this current achievement (my fishing was between 190-200)

It took me about 5 hours to catch him, however there was no loot confirm. It just auto looted with no BOP confirmation, I think they might have finally gotten rid of it for the fish!

Thanks for all the ideas about horde fishing in IF - the /liedown idea works great, and helps a lot. When you lie down you can orient your toon so that your head goes through the back wall and then your title will be totally covered!

Ok, so I went fishing in the Folorn Cavern with a fishing skill of around 140.

On the 35th lure I found him. In that time I've got:

Longjaw Mud Snapper - (21 : 60.0%)
Bristle Whisker Catfish - (8: 22.9%)
Brilliant Smallfish - (5: 14.3%)
Old Ironjaw - (1: 2.9%)

I was stood in fromt of Lago Blackwrench and was in the water up to my elbows.

I just caught the fish today, after the 3.2.2a patch, and I'm pleased to announce that the BoP window is GONE!
I cast my line, clicked the bobber, heard a "reeling in" sound effect followed by an achievement ding. Looking up from my comic book I discovered I had caught Ironjaw. I had been looking forward to accidentally casting a new line instead of clicking the accept button, but it seems we no longer need to worry about that.

i'm a level 34 human rogue. FINALLY caught him after between 870-880 casts.... nothing special, just throwing a line into the pool of the Forlorn Cavern. pretty much right on par with the chart from an earlier post that explained percentages to catching him. you guys in that 300 cast club are lucky! lol in the end though, got a couple low level green items and potions along the way i could send to my alt and sell at the AH, probably worth 3 or 4 gold worth of items by the end of it as a bonus to the achievement. didn't get that BOP message either (i'm still more of a noob though so i don't know much about what the patches have done).

also, someone earlier mentioned Old Ironjaw as an actual weapon.... i did catch a Steelscale Crushfish, which is a 12dps or so mace, by coincidence off the docks of Southshore while trying to catch the Fish Finding ability. it is pretty fun to equip it and smack some wolves or something around just for the sake of gaining mace skill.

630 fish, 3hrs, 54 skill points later I finally got the old man. To say I got excited after finally catching it would be an understatement. I actually had to go unload fish in my bank to continue fishing. I wanted to stop a couple times because I thought you might have to be 450 but you don't, I caught him at 443. Just some info if you're debating on doing it or continuing after about 300 fish, lol.

I was just fooling around on my warlock fishing a few in between my AV's to level him and i just started fishing and at like level 5 fishing i caught him. Now on my main, 80 druid, i have been fishing for at least 1k fish and i can't catch him, its just terrible

Thanks to all who posted helpful tips for fishing inconspicuously in Ironforge as Horde.

I finally decided it was about time to get this old fish, so I braved the guards, and made my way to the cave. A few level 80s decided it just wouldn't do to have me there fishing, and killed me.

After returning, I used the /sleep command to keep a lower profile. Although I was noticed a couple times, I wasn't deemed enough of a threat apparently. Fishing while lying down seems to be the key to getting undisturbed fishing time.

After my successful catch, I counted up all fish in my bags, and discovered I had a total of 333 fish, plus Old Ironjaw!

As you will see down in further posts, many people make the mistake of casting catching Old Ironjaw and then recasting not realizing he is BoP. They realize at it afterwards and get angry and try to warn others about it. theres an easier way to do it. put your cast lure ability on your action bar and do not use your keyboard to cast. moving your mouse back and forth will many times allow you enough time to see what u have caught without recasting. therefor there will be less missed Ironjaws because you will see what you have caught before you click the cast button again (With your mouse)!

Getting into Ironforge is not that difficult for Horde side if you are anywhere near the level of the guards. I rode through the front gate and circled around until I got to the forlorn cavern. Once I got there, I swam out to the farthest area away from the road and killed the one guard who was still following me, then swam to the shore and started fishing. Most of the alliance players who ran past waved at me (I took off all my armor so it would not receive durability damage before I entered the city).

Just fished up Old Ironjaw as Horde. I fished in The Forlorn Cavern. Most of the time the Alliance left me alone, occasionally fishing with me!

I did it while leveling fishing - only level 297 fishing reached so far. My guess is if you are leveling fishing from 1 to max while doing this you have very good chances to grab both.

Haha, is there a record board somewhere? I just got it in under 10 casts.
I tried fishing him up with my Horde Druid and stopped after ~650 casts because I needed to visit my trainer. Now I tried again with my also Horde Shammy, got there last night, already dead tired and only did 3-5 casts before falling asleep. Now I log back in, still in the Forlorn Cave, ready to have a 4-5 hour anglin' session and the 4th cast suddenly gives me the achievement swoosh. I was barely awake yet, now I am and overjoyed.

I've tried all the "tricks" like having the Crocs in the City quest, wearing the lucky charm necklace, using max fishing skill. Nothing. This is driving me nuts.

I am alliance and I was at about 145 fishing skill, i think, and i went to try for the "Old Ironjaw" achiev... i fished him up on my very first attempt... True story.. Went to try the "Old Crafty" When i was lvl 46 and fishing about 210 and tried over 500 times and didnt get it, then i got over it because horde kept killing me :P

Edit 5/10: Finally got him on cast 553 today. I did have the Crocolisks quest in my log, but I'm not quite sure if that helped or not. It was humorous seeing so many Alli standing around the entrance of the water, all fishing right along with me today.

I started at 250 fishing (with a +20 fishing pole, using no additional baubles or attachments) and then ended (or stopped) with 300 fishing - I never bothered to go see a trainer for my fishing profession since I knew soon enough that I would be heading to Northrend (requiring 305 fishing minimum), as you soon shall see and read on as to why in a minute. I casted 1,409 times for Old Ironjaw all the while standing and/or lying down in the back of The Forlorn Cavern within the city of Ironforge - coordinates (47,24) - as Alliance players passed by my Horde, Level 67 Tauren Druid, for approximately 3-5 hours straight (inbetween 5 to 30 minute intervals). I believe I was only noticed twice the entire time whilst fishing - though none of the passers-by were within level of attacking my character, so I was never fallen to becoming a victim of being "ganked" by any Alliance related players within the city. However, as a warning, low- or high-level Alliance players may or may not tell and/or notify others about your whereabouts through their city's global chat system, so be sure to take extra precaution(s) in concealing yourself as much as possible to avoid any "ganking" related deaths and run-backs while in ghost form - same goes for entering the city as well (you may instead want to use the backside tram subway system entrance to and from Stormwind and Ironforge to keep your presence to a minimum). It is generally very quiet and non-populated in the back of Ironforge throughout any day of the week, so you shouldn't run into too much trouble, if any, aside from the level 75 Ironforge Guards. You may want to bring some music and/or tunes along - or surf the net in the web browser of your choice - to run in the background whilst fishing to pass the time by. Fishing may also go by a lot faster for you if you use a trusty WoW add-on that I use - and personally swear by - specifically for fishing related tasks, that goes by the name of "Fishing Buddy". Also, I might add as a side note that after acquiring and/or fishing up Old Ironjaw in the latest patch of WoW - version 3.3.3 - with my trusty ol' Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000 fishing pole, I received no Bind on Pickup (BoP) message confirmation box from within the loot window with auto-looting enabled.

Unfortunately, i'm another lucky person after getting Ironjaw and his achievement on about my 20th cast.

What made it worse was arriving to see two other fellow Horde who had been fishing in the same spot for 2 hours; I waltz in and grab the fish after getting the Fishing Diplomat achievement!

My gut instict of "Might as well blast 10 minutes on Ol' Ironjaw, should be a laugh" seems to have paid off immensely.

(That, and Death Knights are OP)

Just caught this as a hordey, Used most of the advice already posted: track humanoid food to see whos nearby, sit in the lower left in the cavern, and took the tram to IF from SW.

Caught him at cast number 827. took around...4-5ish hours, was my 3rd visit there. Alot better then 6kish on old crafty e_e;

I just got very,very lucky on my lvl10 Warlock and was able to catch him after only 125 casts. I was using a Aquadynamic Fish Attracter,and I got my fishing skill to 128,and cooking to 121. Good luck and Happy Fishing!

This beauty took me about 500 casts to fish up in the shallow circular ring of water in the Mystic Ward before they took out fishing in that particular spot. I did not get the fish at a very high skill level but I think it was over 200. Keep trying, happy fishing and good luck!

Only equips the one I have in inventory at the time. So far, these are the only ones I've been able to get. Finally taking the time to work on my fishing.

I use that macro for all my toons. The keeps me from recasting on accident or while looting. Might help with those that recast when tryin to loot Ironjaw. So far, got him on two of my toons, Rogue was around 215 when he caught'em and my Pally just now at 145.

Idk what everyone is complaining about with his low drop rate or something. I stealthed in as a Horde and caught it within 20 casts with an ally DK sitting right be side me. I also got the 500 fish caught in the same 20 casts.

(I'm totally jk. I've tried this soooo many times on my allies and had terrible luck. I'm just much more lucky with my Horde toons. Caught Old Crafty on my lvl 30 alt at 17 fishing skill. I know it can be very tedious, but don't think that just because it has a low drop rate you won't get it quick. Currently over 3000 casts with my ally into the IF pool and no luck.)

I had some insane luck with this fish considering I'm playing a horde character aswell. Was prepared to fish some hour and be ganked by alliance but I caught this on my second cast! Sometimes the gods smile upon you, or I was just lucky.

As you cannot fish anymore in the Lava, I spent 2hours in the Forlorn Caverns which resulted in

Session 2 - 12 Fish - Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

My advice, don't be worried to walk away and don't be plagued with "If I stop now then it'd of dropped in the next cast...", because it will drop when it drops.

The heavens opened, the angels danced, the harps played and Old Ironjaw is in the off hand. Priest must have been on a blessed day. Had one of old man Barlow's sharpened hooks on my Nat Pagel rod.

I levelled from lvl1 to grand master on my hunter....getting the 1000 fish on the way in the Folorn Cavern. Still haven't caught him on that one.

Finally caught him today! The guards in IF are now 85 and shoot you for 3k, plus there's flying gryphon guards who charge-stun you, died 3 times getting to forlorn cavern lol.

Then after 2539 casts, leveled my skill from 190 to 525.., even got myself The 1 Ring I finally GOT THIS FISH! Feeling incredibly happy right now! I don't think anyone has covered this achievement in Cataclysm yet. For Horde, the route there it's made much easier with flying mounts, but the fishing part remains highly unpredictable.

What I did was:

- Mount up and fly to Stormwind, in my case I departed from Stranglethorn Vale
- Head towards the Dwarven District tram terminal. This is located in the North East corner just above the 'S' and the 'T' on the world map. You will aggro a few guards, both air and land - but don't fret, head straight towards the terminal's entrance which is instanced and you will lose all aggro once you are inside.
- Take the tram. If the tram is not there I would highly recommend waiting for one instead of running the distance by foot.
- While you are on the tram do not under any circumstances jump off the tram, the run back is quite long.
- Get off the tram at the Ironforge terminal and leave the instanced zone into Ironforge.
- The area you are in now is Tinker Town, you need to head to southern Ironforge, to the Forlon Cavern. You will need to fly north through two sections, and you will not doubt aggro guards both air and land.
- Mount up and head towards Forlon Cavern as efficiently as you can. If you are able to get there without dismounting, the aggro from guards in the previous rooms will drop by the time you dismount at the pond.
- If you are dismounted and engage in combat, continue to run and head towards the pond as much as you can in the hope that you will be able to resurrect your corpse in or near the pond where there are no guards.
- Move to the back of the pond and start fishing!

I am currently on 385 fish and counting.

I started playing wow like 3 weeks ago. My first toon is a Gnome, while passing through Ironforge for the first time, i decided to try my luck. I caught Old Ironjaw on my 23rd cast ever, without any lures or bait or anything :P f***in crazy luck. Its damn near impossible, but it happened. Quick question, after about 3 days of fishing, and 2000+ loots, still coming up empty. Do I HAVE to have anything attached to my poles (lures, etc.), or can I just raw-dog this SOB? I've been fishing without lures or buffs, so I'm just wondering if it was possible.

I've fished him up on 2 chars now.

- The second time I caught him (fishing level 110) the sever time was 9.02 am and I had been fishing for a few minutes.
I don't know if he spawns at a certain time, but if you're having trouble cathing it, you can try fishing at 9.00am.

Just got him on my Troll Shaman.

I've been fishing for him on and off for about a year. Usually about an hour or two once a month, nothing super hardcore. I was doing Archaeology when I decided to make a pitstops and try to get him. Here's the results from today's success:

I'd tried fishing both Old Crafty (and Old Ironjaw when i was Alliance) for probably about 5 hours combined about a year ago and gave up.

I was determined this time. Took about 4 days fishing for a couple hours each day to get Old Crafty in Orgrimaar. I just watched a movie and bound the commands to my mouse, clicking whenever i heard a splash. Kinda peaceful actually. Finally got it and the usual congrats in guild chat.

I still had some time that night so i figured i'd head over to IF to see how much trouble i was in for. Put on all junk clothes and snuck in through the upper windows, being especially careful of the flying guards, but none really came close at all to aggroing me. And very few Alliance in Ironforge now so no worries. I snuck to the very back of the cave wall and sat down, almost completely covered with water, an Alliance would have to be actually looking for me to find me. And none of the guards wander close enough ever.

About 30 casts in and 20 minutes after getting Old Crafty, boom Old Ironjaw lands in my lap. Pretty funny in guild chat and i wasn't too disappointed that i didn't finish watching my movie.

I don't really think the drop rate has increased at all, just lucky. Point is, as long as you expect hours and hours of fishing, and don't mind, you'll eventually get it. Good news for hordies is you don't really have to worry about getting ganked or harrased at all in Ironforge.

I fished this up Today on my 13th cast. I know its just lucky and the RNG was kind to me. I just want to give hope to some people and let people know that it doesn't always take 1000's of casts. You can get lucky.

I had 474 Fishing, Was using the weather beaten Fishing hat and the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing pole.

Also since Cata is out Ironforge is pretty dead, at least on my server. I did what another posts said to do which is stand in back of lake and cast /sleep. makes it super hard for alliance to see you.

Also if your trying for Old Crafty there is a really easy way to get him as well. (assuming they haven't changed it) You go to outlands and pick up the quest crocs in the city when its the daily. Go to org and fish. If you get the quest item before you get Old Crafty don't loot it and cast again. Can normal get him in less then 10 casts. I have heard of it taking people 15-20 but its a better chance at catching him while on this quest.

Ive tried in all different time of the day and night. This is over 3,000 casts with no luck. I know that a random % chance to drop is just that, and the more ou canst the % still stays low. Alot of people think that "Hey, if its %.1 drop chance, and I cast 1000 times Im sure to get it!"
This IS NOT TRUE! If the drop chance is %.1 than it will be %.1 on the 2,000 the same as it was on the first cast.
That being said, I do think that Blizzard should do something about this, sutch in having some kind of internal counter, so that when you do reach your 10,000 cast you get it just for being that stubborn.

Approximately a half-hour spent at The Forlorn Cavern with 525 + 150 (Heat-Treated Spinning Lure) + 30 (Jeweled Fishing Pole) + 5 (Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat) = 710 Fishing skill. This actually took very close to the same amount of time to fish Old Crafty up and had extremely similar results in items obtained before acquiring either of them.

Figured i would throw a few lures out as i was in Ironforge for the midsummer festival (as horde)

So I decided to try for Old Ironjaw tonight on my undead while I was in Ironforge to steal the midsummer fire. I was there for about two or three hours fishing. Since others posted what they got fishing before Old Ironjaw finally popped up, I decided to post my tally as well. Before Old Ironjaw bit, I caught approximately:

100 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish
267 Raw Longjaw Mud Snappers
a lesser healing potion
a 17 pound catfish
& a 19 pound catfish
Not to mention a couple daggers in the back and some arrows in the face by some allies who decided to double team me halfway thru my fishing trip. lol

it is very easy to enter IF since you can fly in azeroth just fly close to the ceiling and head to the forlorn caverns. I've been fishing for 2 days for about 5 hours of fishing and still i can't catch it. And i catched old crafty in ogrimmar twice in less than 1 hour wtf lol

I caught Old Ironjaw while I was on this page reading comments on how to catch Old Ironjaw. Background noises, video set to Windowed (Fullscreen), auto-loot on. I heard the sound, looted, recast, alt+tab'd back out and heard the achievement pop. Took about 10-15 minutes.

I find it rather odd that "The legendary uncatchable fish of Ironforge" vendors only for a round or two of Southshore Stout.
I was expecting scantily clad women to rain down from the heavens, noobs to pwn themselves in my presence, ALL OF AZEROTH TO BOW TO MY AWESOME POWER. Instead, all I got was this frog.

Guess I had a lucky week...
Last Sunday I got my Lucky Fishing Hat during the fishing tournament (&another +5 fishing line).
Monday I received a Bone Fishing Pole from the daily fishing quest (still prefer my Jeweled one)
Tuesday I found Lil' Timmy and got my white Kitten in Stormwind (after about 2 hours waiting in the courtyard for him), to add to my other 4 cats, chicken, 2 moths, 2 Parrots, bunny, raptor, crab and balloon.
Then Wednesday night while riding through the courtyard doing the daily quest I stumbled on him again (and got a 2nd kitten I couldn't resist) and followed him his whole route.
Then last night after doing the fishing daily in Ironforge, since I had some +75 lures to waste, I stepped to the back of the pool threw out my fishing line about a DOZEN times and caught Old Ironjaw and got the achievement (I don't remember him requiring me to answer "yes" to bind, but maybe I oked it without thinking about it). Note: that's who I was fishing for...didn't realize he was that hard to catch?
I'm not sure why people recommend bringing empty bags, I just recasted whenever I got a fish I didn't want...no sense in keeping them if I'm maxed out fishing (and I'm not hungry).
To review: I'm a maxed out fisher, wearing a Lucky Hat +5, with my new bone pole +30 and a +75 fishing lure, fishing from the back (center) of the pool in the Forlorn Cavern and caught Old Ironjaw in about a dozen casts and looked for and watched as the achievement flashed on me screen...

I am sorry to brag, but I have to be the luckiest horde to every enter Ironforge, and fish up Old Ironjaw. I went to the backside of the cavern, fished twice, then realized I needed to equip the lure from the fishing hat; and with the next cast I fished up Old Ironjaw. A smile just crossed my faced, I yelled a couple times with praise, and got the hell out of there.

My sister's 20 and she saw me fishing one time and she was all like "Thats so cool, can I try? Hah? Hah? Can I?" and when she tried, I couldnt play wow for 2 weeks bcuz of her fishing all the time. So I thought I could take advantage of that and sent her to fish Old Ironjaw and I was all like "Ok, listen here. Its one of the rare fishes in game, so you'll prolly try to fish it up for hours!" Then she started... I went to the other room to watch some TV and in less than a minute, she came and told me "I cought something with green name". Went to see, she cought Old Ironjaw for 4 casts... Now she's doing all my rare fishing achievements. :)

LOL - I just fished this sucker up while doing the Ironforge fishing daily's. Funny, on my main character, I fished and fished and he never dropped, now on an alt, he drops when I'm not even looking for him.

Heya...What I did was just fly in as fast and as far as I could get in, b 4 being killed by guards..then walked back to my body..ran again as far as I could get..made it to the fishing spot..was killed by guards..then when u rez u r right there and no guards around. Also did it in the am...put on hat, pole and lure..sleep and fished..got it after about 150 fish..woot..very lucky!

Ok so after 4 hours and a bit drunk I FINALLY caught him.

Started at 6:30ST and ended at 11ST, with roughly 10-15 miscasts and a couple few minute breaks in-between,
I was determined to catch this mofo.

Toon caught this is an alt, Fishing buddy keeps data for my other toon fishing here as well. Best I can guess is in about 25 casts i got it.
Used fishing buddy to keep track of fish, problem is keeps the overall
totals for all my toon, not separate ones. Other problem is cant reset it, still working on that issue.

On Destromath it's taking me forever to catch this guy (Forlorn Cavern in Ironforge). I'm 525 fishing and I'm probably at about the 2500 cast mark, if not more. I've probably been fishing for around 10 hours total.

After dying 4 times geting into Ironforge I literally got this achievment on my second cast.
So - anyone looking to get this - you might look into it. Might be nerfed.

Just caught Old Iron Jaw today had my Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat (use: adds 75 to fishing), Jeweled Fishing pole (Adds 30 to fishing Skill), Captain Rumsey's Lager (adds 10 to fishing), and Bright Baubles (adds 75 to fishing) Fishing Skill 525 before adds caught in 5 cast.

I feel extreme pity for all of you with 8k+ casts. I just got it expecting to have to to all that, but figured I could sell the lavascales as a source of income. I have played WoW since vanilla, yet never leveled fishing. Check my armory for achieve, Undalyn on Garona. Fishing skill: 32.

Once again, almost no reason to level fishing xD. Now for the other one......bet I get it before max fishing

Just caught him, took me a reasonable time.
Did it as horde: Just use flying mount to get there , swim to the back of the cave and fish from there.
I had 2 alliance coming to hit me ( they were low lvl ), had to kill them once so they would fish in peace with me, other than that it was all fine!

I believe I have been subjected to the most insane amount of ''luck'' ever to occur within the Warcraft Universe. I read the account of one who attempted to catch Old Crafty from the warm waters of Orgrimmar and thought it appropriate I share my own experience.. with one even greater.

It was a quiet evening, I silently emerged from the gloom of The Forlorn Cavern. The steady dripping of water over the dark rock was all that made noise, or movement. This forgotten, shadowy corner of Ironforge was the perfect realm for a monster of a wit and strength that is matched by only one, but his is a story yet to come. I approached the still, sapphire pool and gazed over the domain of this scaled legend. The waters surface seemed calm and clear, deceiving a depth and darkness I cannot fathom. It was from this aquatic void that I would learn of a talent I had never dreamed I could possess. An ability to rival every Angler, Mariner and all manner of Fishermen in every corner of The Great Dark. A skill, I never knew, that would be woven into the fabric of my very being. Into my soul, dominated by an unwavering drive to take the monsters of the light less depths. For my legacy. For my most respected catch. I could never have known, nor have comprehended what was to happen moments from drawing my Pole.

It was a clean cast. Short, yet graceful as it arced high, landing softly in the crystal pool. I was not disappointed, within seconds I had a bite. A sizable Catfish. Impressive, but no grand catch. I placed the the fish in my barrel, and as I turned my back.. I felt it. Weak at first, and then it grew. Anxious, I spun around.. I was greeted by the moment that scarred my heart, the memory that will never be forgotten the burning flame that was born within me that frosty night. Our eyes locked from beneath the gentle, rocking surface of the lake, and I felt him. I felt his being shift into mine.. and we became one. What happens next is history. For a brief moment I saw The Great Dark flash in an explosion of radiant light! The shadowed tendrils of The Twisting Nether enveloped me. All turned to silver - white. I was One.

I let back my Rod and with a cast that disappeared from sight, I, Re birthed, felt his ancient teeth grasp the firm hook as if they were my own. I felt the tip drive into his withered jaws as a searing pain shot through mine! .. I screamed with agony and, for but a brief second, loosened my grip of the line. Yet, the molten desire that took hold of me at that moment, when I knew that I could no longer be barred by the fabric of this world, burned a fury of desire I had never felt. A heave of perfect balance, with the strength of a Titan.. and I finally saw the beast. A swirling vortex of sparkling indigo, and purest white. The legendary being skimmed off the shimmering lake and was thrown against my chest with a force so great my feet shot out from beneath me, and I hurtled towards the cobbled rock of the Traveling Fishermen. Before I pulled Lago out from under me. Before Grimnur could pull his jaw up and form a coherent sentence.. Ironjaw looked into me, the world around seemed to dull and halt.. Although skepticism will be ever present.. he spoke. He said in a hoarse but peaceful voice, '' I have lived long, Night Elf. Long enough to grow wise of your world.'' '' In the countless millenia that I have swam Azeroths' endless oceans, none have been worthy of ending me.. Until now''. '' I feel the flame within you, a passion of insatiable hunger''. As a troll, I took the portal in orgrimmar to the twilight highlands then just flew west to ironforge. I'm a rogue, so I was naked except for a crap dagger in my main hand to sap with. If you make friends with a rogue or cat druid that could easily sneak in like me, and who has mass summons, they could probably get you in without your gear getting trashed.

So it took me 5200 catches to get Old Crafty, and now I'm at 2500 catches in Ironforge and I've yet to catch Old Ironjaw. Are you kidding me? Most people that have bad luck getting one fish get the other one quickly... but not me. I've had mega patience throughout all of this but my bad luck is really starting to piss me off. At this rate, I'll be getting Mr. Pinchy's pet at 20k+ catches.

and finally the old ironjaw
when i read the posts thought twice to try and get it "dind´t wanted to spend a lot of time on this thing" so just try to do the daily and then until the dungeon finder got me a dungeon. by the way i have 215 fishing skill
maybe rate its better know or just really good luck

I put up my mind to catch Old Ironjaw from The Forlorn Cavern in Ironforge.
It went like this... I started at 17:45 danish time and ended at 17:51 danish time.

I caught: 14x Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper, 3x RawBrilliant Smallfish, 7x Raw bristle Whisker Catfish and last but not least the famous Old Ironjaw.

I have tried before without help and then i thought, "maybe it would help if I took time on it"... And BANG! Old Ironjaw... Maybe if you have fishing for a while do what i did, maybe it helps you too... Good luck fishing...!

Now i will go for Old Crafty and do the same...

For those who were able to complete this in about 200 catches, you are lucky. I have spent 3 hours and over 1000 catches and still have yet to complete this achievement.

The easiest part was flying through IF to get to Forlorn Cavern as lvl 85. If you are lower than that, you might go in a group, stealth or wait until you can fly through IF. You generally do not have to worry about most Alliance killing you, that is with the exception of Hunters and Druids. Well, you might have to worry about Rogues, but I never saw one (LOL).

I did this on my SP and a Dwarf hunter could tell I had been their for 2 hours just fishing. He was fishing as well, but kept logging on and off. After 2 hours, a Night Elf hunter showed up and they decided to kill me. Honestly, I couldn't care less, expected to have been killed a lot more before then, and wondered if they thought I would engage in a fight. PUHLEEEZ! I am a squishy and never would have a chance against 2 pets and 2 hunters on me. I am no where near that skilled. So, why would I waist time in a fight? I had a good laugh, rezzed and kept fishing.

Anyway, you are better off just taking the hits, and not engaging as others might just leave you alone, just dying, and waiting until they leave your corpse. Or just keep rezzing back and eventually they will get bored and go away. If you have over 4 hours of time to waste on catching this, then at least make it a bit more exciting and see how long they will waste their time on you! :) My only other suggestions is: 1) take of your gear so you do not receive durability damage; 2) put on a tabard - non Horde of course - if you don't like being in your undies; and 3) don't emote unless they emote at you (even though mine was nice...that is when they decided to kill me...lol). Anyway, best of luck to all you fellow fishers!

I was very lucky to get Old Ironjaw after about 110 tries using Jeweled Fishing Pole, one Glow Worm and Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat. I was at about 495 fishing skill when I finished. Good luck, all :)

Finally reeled this guy in tonight.

I don't even know how many casts it took me to get him...probably around 2500. After a while I stopped keeping track. I never quit though. I knew, one day, my persistence would pay off. I knew that one day I would fly out of Ironforge victorious, never to set foot in The Forlorn Cavern again. Never again would I gaze upon that row of dimly-lit shops; never again would I keep lonely watch over Ransin Donner's solitary vigil as his pet Murky shuffled back and forth. Never again would I cast, cast, and cast again...attach a Bright Bauble, a Glow Worm...and cast again.

Old Ironjaw, I just couldn't quit you. Now, I am free.

Couldn't believe this. Randomly decided to level fishing on my priest while waiting for the Tol Barad queue, barely casted the line 10 times and caught Old Ironjaw. I got it before even getting the 25 Fish achievement.... All those hours spent fishing on my Death Knight wasted. :(

This fish is really all based on your luck, There is no way of increasing it or making you not able to catch it.

In case anyone is taking all of this down and doing the math, which I doubt lol I Decided not to leave my seat and continually cast until I caught him. Took me 214 Raw Longjaw Mudsnapper, 96 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish, 50 Raw Brilliant Smallfish, 2 19 Pound Catfish, 2 Lesser Mana Potion and 1 Lesser Health Potion.... finally 1 Old Ironjaw. In all, caught on cast number 366. This was at level 85 with the Mastercraft Kaul'ak Fishing Pole, Weather Beaten Fishing Hat, and a Heat-Treated Spinning Lure.

I opened a ticket because it just seems so improbable.

Since the ticket has not been answered in 3 days, I'm beginning to think there is something to my suspicion.

Edit: I finally received a reply and they said it's not bugged but recommend I visit a fansite.

Edit: 5537 was my lucky number. My RNG was really bad.

This is one of those achievements you might want to consider a faction transfer to complete. I have often considered maxing out a goblin and doing horde side achievements, buying bank tabs and horde only recipes galore then switching to an alliance race. This achievement, as well as cooking recipe completion, tailoring and/or BS and/or LW professions would all show slight benefits as there are some recipes that only the horde can get. Also, goblins get "the best deals anywhere," and can buy even guild tabs for less than alliance guild masters can buy them. A goblin may transfer with an unused tab, if not more than one.

I have always wanted a goblin rogue. A goblin rogue might translate into a human rogue fairly well? Of course, then I'd probably want a new goblin. :)

I have Old Ironjaw already but it is simply for "the challenge" that players like me persist in doing it on other toons. Currently getting ganked repeatedly the last 24 hours but battling on with my lowbie toon. With one of my toons, well versed in Archaeology and whatnot, I got all the fun stuff out we had a right party, me and the Alliance with all of our transformations and things we could lay out on the ground. That was a fun day. This time around... not so much fun lol.

Got him today after years of trying to catch him, today was one of my serious tries (250+ casts.).What i can confirm is that there was no confirmation window, so feel free to enable autoloot to reduce some clicking or getting your little finger goes numb on the shift key.

I can't believe i just spent 2 days in a Alliance stronghold totally nude, wielding only a fishing pole. Caught over 2,000 fish and never got Old Ironjaw. What is wrong with this picture. I endured multiple pk's, 13 hours of mindless fishing. The drop rate for this fish really needs to be tweaked. I caught Old crafty within 15 tries and did not have to get pk'd." Its just a fish" Battle.net people, I Played my role, I got into enemy territory, fished in their pools, now give me the achievement, please !

Just fished this up moments after fishing up The 1 Ring in Ironforge. I have no way of knowing how many casts it took because I fished on-and-off for about three months before I finally caught Old Ironjaw. Several times I fished for a good 2-3 hours straight, including this session just now and a shorter one last night. Old Ironjaw takes me to 200/201 profession achievements... now to go repeat this grind in Horde territory some other time...

If I had to guess, that was probably somewhere in the ballpark of 3000 casts total. Maybe even 3500. Definitely more than I needed for the rare fish achieve.

EDIT: Just caught Old Crafty in under 250 casts! I am just lol'ing nonstop right now after how long it took for me to catch Ironjaw!

PATCH 5.4

I can confirm that you no longer have to click accept Ironjaw as a soulbound item. So put auto loot on and do not worry about losing him.

Just fished up this elusive creature. I had fished for about an hour and 10 minutes when I decided to take go for a smoke. When I came back I decided to try out Fishing Buddy and after about 15 minutes of fishing with this addon I finally cought the sum'&*!@#.

Feeling really lucky after reading about the horror stories some people shared here.

As a horde player I flew into Ironforge and reached the back of the pool where it is possible to sit down and thus hide beneath the water.

I was spotted by a dwarf almost immediately.

He rafted over to me, sat beside me and fished and drank beer and roleplayed with me for THREE HOURS. Very friendly chap.

I caught the following in my hunt for Old Ironjaw:

I have a lot of alts, and when I am not working on them, I usually park them in an area that has daily fishing and cooking quests, a pretty painless way of getting some XP. So I had done the "Young ironjaw" daily quest a few times, but I had no idea that Old Ironjaw was a thing.

I was locked out of my main alt and decided to log into my level 5 gnome. I ran her to Ironforge and got her fishing and cooking. Level 5 is not eligible for daily quests, but I was bored and thought I would cast her up to 75 fish.

At cast 51 I caught Old Ironjaw and got an achievement on my screen. I mentioned it to my boyfriend and he was... grrr... I guess he's spent a lot of hours casting for it and hasn't got it.

I would like to thank all of the Alliance players who left me alone while trying to get this acheivement. Currently I'm at 550 casts. Old Ironjaw will be mine!

For several days, without hope and success, praying to all the five Gods of RNG and every existing guardian angels in Heaven or Hell, whichever I belong to after cursing and forgiving for every sin I made in the last month, I'm just throwing a hook into shallow waters and with crossed fingers pull it back every so often to see nothing but 1 Copper worth of useless junk piling up in my backpack. Whoever blessed this fish with all the might to evade even the most epic casts ever took place on Azeroth, may God bless You. I shall sing songs of your wisdom and make sacrifices of pure server time on the very altar in The Forlorn Cavern that slowly becoming my tomb, encasing my soul forever in the deadliest of duels between man and fish for all eternity. With only a small counter slowly rising in number smiling in the corner of my view, the only companion I had, feeling all the hatred of a Horde player stuck in the Alliance city of Ironforge, manwiched constantly for even setting foot in their holy city in the first place.

The long lived legend of the mightiest fish ever lived on the hallowed crust of Azeroth, was besieged by a thought quicker than the speed of light, a flash of idea, that formed behind the very flesh and bone of my head. However, legends are born with a reason; to stand for itself for all eternity, unbroken by time itself. With all my might I've tried and failed to break the very foundations of this myth, to catch "The legendary uncatchable fish of Ironforge". For every failed attempt, a new part of me cried out in pain, even those I knew nothing of its origin or existence. The veins of my eyes slowly popping while watching the number of fails rise beyond 10000. The thought of me holding this fish was slowly overrun by the pain and regret of fishing and getting killed constantly for 6 days straight. However after all that I've witnessed and everything I've been through, I'm committed to experience the end of this battle, even if it results in me being torn apart by rampage and fury. May this statement be my solemn oath, my testament to not only this world, but every world hereafter. Let these thoughts stand as a promise for all mankind, that when I catch this fish, I'll find a way to cook and consume it with a Joker-like smile grinding on my face, the very sweat of my ancestors seeping through my skin, the thoughts of a mysterious legend broken and my suffering avenged.

My Father told me once, that Lady Luck will point towards me and bless my very footsteps. Sadly he never mentioned which finger will be pointed at me.
