Run to corpse and ressurect
Run to Elder

All the quests are availiable for both horde and alliance even tho wowhead displays some quests only Alliance/Horde

Collected all 50 in few hours... some of them were in pretty distant and random places like the one in Maraudon. In LBRS and BRD I killed no mobs and didn't even use my mage invisiblity.
Alliance towns were a bit tricky ones except Darnassus because it was kinda empty. In Ironforge I got killed three times and in Stormwind only once, because the quards can be outrunned more easily there. Using the Deeprun Tram between IF and SW is a nice experience for a horde-only player like me.

I have 120 coins now if only there was something to spend them on. Already spent 25 on the eng stuff and that was worthless seeing how they can't be used inside.

On my classic account toon, I've been able to accumulate 49 coins this year (2010). In other words; one coin short of 50 Coins of Ancestry. This includes all elders of both Alliance and Horde, Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor and dungeons available. Gotta wait 'till next year, I guess!

Im lvl 80 blood elf hunter and havent got any rep at all lately, im revered with thunder, bilge, and darkspear and since im trying to get the albino drake i thought going after the coins would be an easy rep gain for all main factions, any1 know why i dont get any rep even tho it says 83 per coin for me? same with stonetalon quests, says i get for the horde but nu faction rep changes? :S

These coins can be picked up from Elders scattered throughout Azeroth and ~~Outland~~. To get one simply locate an Elder and speak to him/her. For a detailed guide on how to find Elders/coins and the entire Lunar Festival, check out Wowheads Lunar Festival Guide

Edit: Brainfarting, no Elders in Outland due to Lunar Festival celebrating the victory in the War of the Ancients.

You can now buy a Lunar Lantern companion pet from Fariel Starsong in Moonglade.. Costs 50 coins.

Actually it's two different lanterns depending on faction, kind of like the pet from Enchanting:

Lunar Lantern for the Alliance.

Festival Lantern for the Horde.

They're tradeable so... to the Neutral AH, Robin! *bat transition*

Just curious though but are there ways outside of the first 4 or 5 quests and the elders to get the coins? Perhaps blizz adding on Dailies may help? i find myself short on the coins and have gotten all the elders than bought what was needed for the ach and my engineer

There's a total of 84 coins to gather this year (2012 and 2013), with the addition of 9 from the Cata Elders.
That's also 84 Lucky Red Envelope and 6300 (6930 with the guild perk) rep.

There's a total of 84 coins to gather this year, but if you are engineer:

x50 Pet
x5 Dress/Suit achievement
x30 All engineering schematics

Total: 85 of 84 possible on this year, so do you need to wait another year for the last schematic....

If you're planning to But The companions and sell them on Neutral AH's , Just grind 50 coins with an Alt then Buy the companion send it to your main :P Might take a while for grinding though but I'd say it's worth the gold.

I used 2 Alliance alts to farm Lunar Lanterns, one for my main and one for the AH. I wasn't watching but it couldn't take more than 2.5 hours or so of flying around. The one on the AH sold much quicker than I thought, for about 16k. Mind you I'm on Thaurissan so there's not many Alliance characters, or even people with Alliance alts. I'm thinking of getting another one and holding on to it for 6 months or so to see if I can sell it for a fortune.

Moral of the story: there's gold in them thar coins!

If you wish to go around the world and talk to elders for coins, but don't wish to be clicking trough their dialogs, you can run this script and it will do the talking for you -just click to open the dialog and it will finish the quest for you! NB: Remember to /reload or relog once finished, otherwise you will also be doing this for other quests, so beware.
/run local f,G,C=CreateFrame("Frame"),"GOSSIP_SHOW","QUEST_COMPLETE"f:RegisterEvent(G)f:RegisterEvent(C)f:SetScript("OnEvent",function(f,e)if e==G then SelectGossipAvailableQuest(1)elseif e==C then CompleteQuest()end end)

Alternatively if you wish to simply click a macro after talking to them, instead of the game doing it automatically, use this (you must click it twice to fist select quest then complete it):

I made myself an addon to help me visit all the Elders, but since it's selfish not to share, here is a link to said addon, Candy Buckets (Lunar Festival: Elders) -it will help you figure out where you have been and where you can go, have fun! :)

Just so I'm not missing anything, I visited all the elders listed below and got all the achievement, but only have 71 coins... What's this talk of 84?

You get this coin from talking to an elder and bowing to them it is a instant quest gives just under 10 gold, and it goes towards an achivment it is worth doing them all because then you will get the title "elder" doesn't take long ans it is also 1 of the World event achivment needed for the Voilet Proto Drake.
