I was talking with my tanking buddy about hunter pets. I've lvled a hunter to 42 so I'm not too knowledgeable about 70 hunters, but Ive got enough understanding about the class to contribute my 2 cents.
Heres where we where disagreeing for raid utility pet wise:
Me - Bats/Owls - Any damage mitigation in raids is a must. 210 melee reduction on enemy mobs isn't too shabby. Both pets do aight damage too. You also have to admit, both are just hilarious to have as pets, specially Owls to annoy people in PvP. My Hunter twink has one and Ive seen hordies go straight at it to just shut it up. lol
Him - Wolfs - Buffing all melee classes and a bit more survivability
Hes a MM hunter so its not the pet that matters here but where the benefits lay. ty for responses.

Ravager > Wolf for raid dps.
Cool ty for the info on that. He uses 2 differant pets for the most part, ravager for dps and when the guild calls for it a Turtle to off-off-tank with when hes speced BM.
However, raid wise, which would be more beneficial over all (for the most part he raids MM so pet its there to help not damage), Owls that reduce inc melee damage (which is where most raid damage comes from), or the Wolf that buffs one group's melee damage??

First I agree that wolf pets aren't very effective given their low damage, small buff range, and lack of higher ranks for the Furious Howl ability.
Secondly I have not found that a pet with screech is particularly useful in a raid group. The attack power reduction seems nice but it does not necessarily do you any good. It is not particularly difficult to eliminate all of a mob's attack power damage bonus and applying additional attack power reductions beyond that point has no effect.
In most cases a single improved demoralizing shout or roar can completely eliminate the attack power bonus on a raid mob. Once you've taken 320-340 attack power off a mob already further reductions are just a waste of your pet's focus. The comments on the
demo shout
page link to more detailed discussions on this.
It is unfortunate but the none of the pet buff or debuff abilities really offer a significant advantage over the pure damage alternatives, at least in pve raid content.

Yup, I'm well aware of CoR but I just don't see it in use. At least in the raids I'm part of we get far more benefit from using warlocks to buff caster instead of melee damage. In the few cases where we had such a melee heavy group that CoR might be a better option we're probably using a druid tank and have at least one damage dealing warrior, between their two debuffs there's still no need for Screech and I'm better off using a high damage pet.
With 2.4.3 combining warlock's CoE and CoS maybe we'll have one who can afford to add CoR but I'm not counting on it.

Your raid DPS should be filled with nothing but Warlocks BM Hunters and Shadow Priests
