Hey,
I have a problem with Gruul. Though I've raided him several times, my DPS has always been fairly low on him because I'm always afraid of the Shatters.
Here's what I do:
I try to run out from range of Gruul about ~5 seconds before he does his Shatter ability, and if I get to the cave walls, I usually don't hit anyone. However, this causes a loss of DPS and oft times the timer is off by 5~10 seconds. I understand I can use Cloak of Shadows to help me get away from too many people, but I think that the Shatter happens about every 40-50 seconds, leaving my CoS on cooldown every other time.
Is this average, or am I doing something wrong?

Simple version: don’t be retarded.
Gruul is a really big dude. He’s also really ugly. It’s hard to fathom who he found that would let him father seven sons, but that’s not important right now. What is important is the way threat works on this fight. Every so often, Gruul will turn from attacking the main tank and hit the person in melee range who is second-highest in threat. This means that there need to be two tanks, and that your threat CANNOT be higher than the offtank’s. For rogues, this is probably the most important part of the fight.
Now, throughout the fight, the boss will “grow” every so often, increasing his size and the damage done by all his abilities. This means that at around 16 growths, he can and will one-shot the offtank with his secondary attack, meaning that the fight has a soft enrage cap at around 8 minutes or so with a typically-geared tank. Gruul has 3.4 million hit points, so assuming two tanks and eight healers, the fifteen dpsers in the raid have to average about 7000 dps combined, or about 470 apiece. However, since you’re guaranteed to have at least a few baddies die at the beginning of each attempt, the personal dps requirement is probably closer to 500-550 per raid member to legitimately get him down.
Also, parts of the ceiling will fall on you, because the guy is too cheap to hire a handyman to fix his cave. When this happens, you’ll see a bunch of rocks falling on your screen. Strafe out of them, but make sure to stay in melee range of the boss, without going in front if possible. These cave-ins will kill you if you’re not quick enough, so make sure you stay on your toes.
Every so often, Gruul will use an ability called “Gronn Slam”, which will take everyone in the raid and fling them through the air in a random direction. This is where it gets tricky, because he will then put a slowing debuff on everyone, and then after 5 seconds cast Shatter, which causes everyone in the raid to take damage depending on their proximity to others, with closer proximity resulting in higher damage (as in, you can come close to one-shotting someone if you stack on them). Fortunately, rogues have a few tricks to avoid eating too much of this. Most importantly, Cloaking removes the slowing debuff, allowing you to move around freely and find a good spot. I generally like to hang out along the back wall, as it’s not usually too full. If need be, use sprint to get yourself out of a crowd of people. Unfortunately, you can’t be responsible for what others do, so no matter how careful you are it’s possible for half your raid to converge on you and roll your face. Do the best you can, though, and things will usually be fine.
Once the Shatter occurs, bandage up if you need to and get back in to start dpsing again. There is a caveat, however: if you get into melee range before your offtank, you have a chance at eating the Hateful Strike that the OT’s been soaking the whole time, so it’s generally wise to wait for both tanks to be in before starting again. Continue to avoid Shatters and Cave-ins, do the best DPS you can, and hope your raid does the same. If most of the people execute the strategy decently, this fight is a cakewalk.
One last note on Gruul: if one or both tanks go down, rogues can save this fight by evasion-tanking the boss for up to the last 5% or so if they coordinate chain evasions. I myself have seen several attempts saved by this happening, so be ready to step in if the opportunity presents itself. Trust me when I say your raid will love you.
Expected DPS: 650-850

Maybe I should be more specific in my question. What I really want to know is should I wait until he starts flinging my around, or should I run out early?

You have the luxury of not being slowed down by gronn lord's grasp, because of cloak of shadows. Stay in until he flings you, then keep your head on straight and find a good spot to chill and wait. Your best bets are either in close to Gruul or way back against the wall. Either way, don't be retarded and you win.

Don't do that!
DPS him the entire time. Ground Slam is random anyways. Don't be fooled by those who say there's a scheme to it. There isn't.

Also as a tip, zoom in your mini map all the way to give you a better idea of how close you are to ppl around you without having to spin around and look.
When zoomed in you can use the mini map to guide you to a spot without anyone else.

Ive never had a problem getting out of hes aoe but its when a rogue thinks its funny and uses COS and stands right next to me... you died but i lived =P
Is that true? Doesnt CoS only remove the debuff but the AoE damage caused by debuffed players is of physical school?
You still get damaged, clos only removes the slowing effect.

To say it more specific: It doesnt matter where you run to. You will always be slammed to another person and have to get away from it.
No, some people tried to tell me one time
"OMG I GOT IT IF YOU RUN AWAY RIGHT BEFORE GROUND SLAM HE GROUNDS SLAM YOU AWAY INTO WALL EVERYTIME, TRY IT"
Tried it. Didn't work. It's random.
On a similar note, ignore your raid leader if they're ignorant enough to assign certain areas for you to be in. Like I said, because Ground Slam is random this makes no @#$%ing sense. As a rogue you don't even care anyways. What the RL is trying to do anyways is get ranged players to spread out in general around Gruul. Why they have to assign positions is an insult to their guild members. It's as if "spread out" is too much information.

Exactly, Shattered is physical damage so a clothie will take more damage from the plate-wearer who's standing next to him.
