[Known Issue] Wowhead Client - "Could not update a file."

I get an error now every time I open the Wowhead Client - "Could not update a file. Please try again later." (
screenshot
)
I've tried everything I can think of.
Redownloaded the client from Wowhead.
Removed all registry entries.
Deleted the Wowhead .lua and .bak files from SavedVariables.
Deleted Wowhead addon folder.
When I open the client after removing/resetting everything related to it, it asks me if the WoW location is correct, starts uploading, and at the end I still get that error (but it says 100% on upload progress and the last file shown is the .toc file). Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have you ensured you're running the client as an administrator? Also, make sure your computer's own security settings aren't interfering, like your antivirus or firewall settings could be interfering.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner. I kinda forgot about this, and I'm not sure if there's an option to subscribe to posts to get notifications.
I did finally get it working. I found the log folder in ProgramData and saw that it was failing when it tried to upload data for the beta client, which I had set up back when the Legion beta was going on. I'm surprised it didn't stop working earlier to be honest, but I suppose you've maybe set your server to reject beta data recently. Just a guess. Also,
beta data
rhymes! (Depending on your pronunciation of data I guess. lol)
Since the error closes the Wowhead Client when I click OK, I removed the beta path from the settings in the registry. It might be nice if the error didn't close the app, so I could view the logs and remove the offending setting within the client. But it's working now, so no worries.
Thanks for the help!
Oh, and if you need me to send any log files for informational purposes, just let me know.

Sorry for the necro, but I am too having these issues.
I can recommend a config file in the ProgramData or a way to override behavior or enforce game path and live/ptr/beta, since I have all the different installations, and my beta is actually the PTR now (game did that by itself) but Wowhead thinks I run beta and tries to download that, but the server fails because it's trying to download from /files/beta/* and it doesn't exist, at least not the .toc file.

How exactly does one fix this issue? What registry key am I looking for? I can't find anything relevant. I am receiving this error as well, which is keeping me from being able to upload my data.

Visit the client options and clear any beta path you have. If you're trying to detect/link the client to alpha/beta it does not currently work due to Blizzard not permitting addons. Clearing the path should stop this error from popping up.

What client path? Can you be more specific? I'm having this same issue...

In the Wowhead Client, click Tools -> Options and remove any path from the Beta field.

The problem is the WowHead client closes before I can click this menu. As soon as I dismiss the "Could not update a file. Please try again later." error the Wowhead client closes.
I solved it the following way on Windows 10:
-Run regedit.exe
-Go to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wowhead\Wowhead Client\Options\
-Open the WoW Folder Beta value entry and clear its data field (Do NOT remove the value entry itself)
After this you should be able to start the client again.
(NOTE: Only open regedit if you have some familiarity with how it works. Modifying the wrong stuff can do some serious damage to your Windows installation)

Same issue here. I have problems to start wowhead client sice a long time ago. Tried all ideas from above. At last I did it all - cleared all options in client (with a little trick it was possible to open options)deleted all registry entries, deleted all wowhead files and folders in ProgrammData / Interface and WTF, deleted the client exe and the folder where I saved the file. Then I restarted the PC, downloaded the client again and moved the filde in a new folder with a different name.
But It doesnt work!
Please help me!

Just downloaded the client for the first time on this computer and getting this error. Went into the registry and cleared the beta and ptr keys that were created, left only the live key. Still can't get it to load. Keep getting the "Could not update a file. Please try again later." Happens at 100% with the toc file.
Was going to start uploading data again once BFA goes live, but if I can't get the client going, I guess I'll have to pass.

Same issue for me. Downloaded for the first time on this Windows installation and cannot get the client to launch. I've tried everything recommended so far but can't get past the "Could not update a file. Please try again later." when at "Updating +Wowhead_looter.toc...".
Can't even configure the setting for the app since the app closes immediately after the error pops up.

Exact same issue. I used to use it fine, but realized today I had never set it back up when I built my new computer a few months ago. I went to do it now, and the client completely closes at Updating +Wowhead_Looter.toc, after the same as above error message of "Could not update a file...."
Deleting the ProgramData Wowhead related folder doesn't fix it, and neither does changing the registry entry above.
