Starting out on WoW

Hey.
I've never played wow before, but I'm very interested in the game, and I've watched numerous twitch streamers for a couple of years (Sodapoppin, Swifty to name the two I watch most at the moment).
The thing is, I'm a perfectionist. That might be why I very rarely play games, but oh well. As a couple of my buddies are getting back into wow when the new expansion comes live, I really want to join them.
My question about the game are these: Is it possible in WoW to get overpowered weapons while leveling? Or other gear for that matter. Not just regular quest rewards but drops that you can get really psyched about at level 10, 35, 55, 70 etc. You get the idea. Can I go from struggling on quests to just smash my way through a wall of mobs just because I got a great weapon as a drop?
I really hope there' that aspect to WoW. The best example I have is from Diablo3. While leveling, suddenly you get a weapon that will just smash anything that gets in your way for 5 levels.
Also, I would like to check out the possibilities of getting some guidance as to which class I should pick. I have no idea what I would enjoy playing, but I guess a caster would be nice, but I also like the idea of being a druid (shifting forms, stealth), and a rogue (stealth). I have no idea what a monk can do. Snap, I'd like to be a priest as well. Basically, I'd be anything. What's cool to level up with, and learn the game mechanics with? I will most certainly level up several characters, but I need help picking out my main one, my first one. Also, getting help to choose a race would be great. Horde or alliance is still in debates as my friends are both, and they will transfer to one or the other. I can just do that as well. So this is basically for leveling purposes only, but suggestions for end game is obviously also appreciated.
The last thing, hopefully, that I'm thinking about, is choosing a profession, or professions. Are they helpful while leveling up? Which ones would be most helpful, and will they be worth my time?
There will be things I haven't thought about here, and things I don't know about. Any tips and guidance for helping me to start out on WoW will be greatly appreciated.

Can I go from struggling on quests to just smash my way through a wall of mobs just because I got a great weapon as a drop?
Hi there! Firstly, I'd like to welcome you to the community!
Second, before I try to answer your questions, I'd like to first point out a couple of things.
TL;DR
: (my direct answer to your questions are in green text).
If you haven't played before, don't expect to be doing
crazy
damage right at the start; you'll figure out as you level which abilities and stats are best for your class and specialization; as well as what abilities of yours work well with others.
The most-powerful items available to low level players are only available to existing level
90s
, to help them level their "alts" (characters they don't mainly play on). For example:
Balanced Heartseeker
or
Bloodstained Dreadmist Robe
. These tan-titled items are called "
Heirlooms
."
However
, there are other items which are almost as powerful that you can obtain as you level, called "rares."
To help you understand, the different gear-
qualities
are as follows (the title-color of an item reflects quality):
Poor
- gray items (aka "vendor trash"), ex.
Scraggy Leather Bracers
.
Common
- white items, ex.
Initiate's Bracers
.
Uncommon
- green items, ex.
Hewn Kodo Gloves
.
Rare
- blue items, ex.
Ragefire Leggings
.
Epic
- purple items, ex.
Molten Helm
.
Legendary
- orange items, ex.
Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
.
Heirloom/Artifact
- tan items, already mentioned.
So, as stated, while you will not be able to obtain these
Heirlooms
at low levels, there are certainly alternatives. This is what
instances
are for:
There are a few types of
Instances
, just to get you familiar with the terminology.
Dungeon
= PvE (player vs environment).
Battleground
= PvP (player vs player).
Arena
= PvP, higher-level content; usually higher difficulty than battlegrounds.
Raid
= PvE, higher-level content; higher difficulty than dungeons.
Scenario
= PvE, higher-level content; designed for solo or small-groups for quick gameplay.
Proving Grounds
= PvE, higher-level content; designed for solo play, focused on class instruction.
For obtaining
gear
, I will focus on
#1
, as it is most straight-forward:
Within each
Dungeon
, you and your fellow group members will face more-challenging mobs than normal world-questing can provide, as well as receive more-powerful items in the form of "rares" (see gear-quality list) from the
Dungeon
bosses. These are the powerful items you are looking for.
Once you obtain these rare-quality items, your character will noticeably become more powerful, to where you will be able to "
smash your way through a wall of mobs
," as you put it.
What's cool to level up with, and learn the game mechanics with?
To begin answering this, there are
3
types of class specializations that you should be aware of, especially when joining an
instance
group:
Tanks
- the "shield" of the group, designed to protect your group, keep attention of mobs (aka "aggro") and take all the damage.
Healers
- the "pillow" of the group, designed to heal allies, cure mob-inflicted ailments and prevent deaths.
DPS
- the "weapons" of the group, designed to attack and kill enemies as designated by the tank.
There are
2
categories of DPS:
Melee
and
Ranged
, which deal damage from
close up
and from
afar
, respectively.
This is a pretty subjective answer, in all honesty. Mostly it's just based on what you find most appealing. However,
in my opinion
, the best classes to begin your game experience with are those with
Pets
: aka
Hunter
or
Warlock
.
With these classes, you can
a)
get help from your pet while questing and
b)
see the activity from a distance to better view NPC activity. Ultimately, though, your play style
will
vary with each class, so that is something to keep in mind.
The last thing ... is choosing a profession, or professions. Are they helpful while leveling up? Which ones would be most helpful, and will they be worth my time?
To begin answering this question, I would like to point out the different available
types
of professions:
Primary
- your character can have a maximum of
2
Primary professions, which come in two different forms:
Gathering
:
Herbalism
Mining
Skinning
Crafting
:
Alchemy
Blacksmithing
Enchanting
Engineering
Inscription
Jewelcrafting
Leatherworking
Tailoring
Secondary
- you can have some or
all
of the Secondary professions:
Archaeology
Cooking
Fishing
Riding
Currently
, professions can indeed be helpful while leveling up - most-notably
crafting
professions with which you craft gear/weapons, glyphs and buffs.
However
, it is important to note that in the upcoming expansion (Warlords of Draenor) the professions will be
equalized
: meaning one profession will not be 'better' than another for any class or type of gameplay. Though each profession will
still
be useful in one way or another.

This post is absolutely awesome, thank you! I really appreciate your answer, and it's helped me out already, and I will come back to this whenever I have a question on any of the above topics.

You bet. If you have any further questions feel free to ask.
You can also look at the numerous
Guides
on this site that will more-thoroughly explain the different aspects of the game.
I merely gave you a small preview of game-play!
Good luck!

As one clarification: you technically CAN get heirlooms earlier, from doing quest in the darkmoon faire (only avalable first week of month) and redeaming the tickits

May I add a welcome to the community as well. As JaxOh1 stated, you can begin working for heirlooms by doing the Darkmoon Faire when it occurs during the first FULL week of each month. (see your in game calender, located on your mini map.) However, your toon will have to have a skill rating of at least 51+, and be in journeyman status to be offered profession based quests. (journeyman refers to the second tier of the professions.) You can complete all the secondary professions, cooking, first aid, fishing, once per faire. This will gain you faire tickets, as well as adding skill points to that profession. Once done with that, then you can do the quests for your primary professions, again earning tickets as well as skill points.
There are daily games to play as well in the faire. These can be done once a day through all 7 days of the faire. And while these add only 1 ticket when completed, doing them all will net you 35 tickets at the end of the faire. While all of the above are done during the faire, and on the fair grounds, the quest given by the "strong woman" is done outside. Her quest requires you to gather 250 grisly trophies. (this means making 250 kills where you gain experience points.) when you complete this one, you gain 10 tickets. ( something to remember, you MUST have the darkmoon faire adventurer's guide in your pack when you do this to collect the trophies.)
Lastly, there is a pet battle quest as well as one for the Archaeology profession. Doing the faire twice, (2 months) should get you the needed tickets to be able to buy your first heirloom item. These are scalable items. meaning that they go up in power as your toon levels up. You will find better items in the game, but these act as a good fallback item when you just can't get that better weapon to drop, and you notice that you have been carrying something for the last 10 levels. In addition, these are account bound. so unlike the soulbound items, these can be mailed to another toon in your account. Hope this helps, and see you in the world.
