The Wow.exe is actually the game itself, the launcher is the Launcher.exe, try pointing the Client to that.
It seems Blizzard is moving forward to integrating the Battle.net client more into WoW, so expect third-party programs like the Wowhead Client to behave in weird ways in the coming months. But as long as it doesn't actually cause errors, don't worry :)

Actually, I'm wondering why starting the WoW.exe opens the Launcher... I think there's some setting in the Launcher you can disable to start the game immediately, if that is preferable to you.
Though the old Launcher will vanish eventually, leaving you only with the Battle.net client.
Lastly, would uninstalling the Battle.net client be an option? You don't need it unless you play Hearthstone.

. With the use of the battle.net launcher, external driving WoW may no longer be a possibility. Anyone -like me- that would carry WoW on a thumbdrive to play on computers we cannot install anything on, will no longer be able to perform that function, and therefore not be able to play at those locations.
Not true at all. If you do as I do and have WoW on an external hard drive to switch between my home system and my work laptop, when launching the app it will state that the game is not found and have a link to "locate the game." Selecting the link will bring up a file browser where you can point it to the directory that has WoW installed. Once it verifies the game you can launch without issue.
I have been doing this for some time and yes, it takes a few clicks and a few seconds, but going between the computers is relatively painless.
