Yes, it's possible.

So. You are going to take the hour-ish to do the starter quests for all 13 races instead of taking half that to grind out the rep doing quests in the starter areas?

Or you could buy the tabard for the faction, pull all of normal mode scarlet monastery, AOE it down and get tons of rep and loot.

I did it for the few alliance mounts that I didn't have and wanted to finish off my collection of. I did one every couple of days to skip the feeling of a grind. It was pretty quick and wasn't all that hard.

Would still take more than an hour... or at least it would FEEL like more than an hour from doing the same dungeon 50 times in a row.

As opposed to what? doing the same starting zone 12 times in a row?
I'd recommend simply doing the low lvl quest areas for quicker rep. At 90 one can blaze through them and they give rep with each faction (except Silvermoon, Bilgewater, Exodar, and Gilneas. On those you do need to make a DK, or slap a Tabard and do dungeons)

Precisely.

Far simpler to make one DK, then just run the dungeons with the tabard on; after all, you need to get gold as well.

Consider for a moment that doing a 5man takes at most 8 minutes today (if the group is really geared it can take as little as six, my personal record is 5 and a half minutes for the brewery). Therefore doing 10 of those would take 80 minutes. Or roughly an hour and a half, rounding up.
Doing 20 would take 3 hours. Doing 40 would take 6 hours.
40 dungeon runs would be more than enough to get exalted with just about everyone thanks to the tabards and the fact that you get over 4000 rep per run assuming a full clear.
By contrast: Doing the starting zone of the DK can easily take up to 1 to 2 hours, and in that timeframe you get only ONE, exactly ONE rep to exalted, and you must then do it again 10 more times for the other ones. Easily chewing up to 10 to 12 hours to do them all.
I think your math is a little off.

that seems like a lot of unnecessary time spent. would be much easier and faster to do as stated in previous posts to just wear the faction tabard and dungeon to exalted.

That sounds like BS.

It's not; check Wowjuju and put your character in, it will give you the rep amount for runs with the tabard on.

If you say so champ. I've gotten 50+ reps to exalted to know what I'm talking about.

Just seems like a waste of time to start so many new toons just to get the mounts. Personally I have one main that is the collector, she's where my achievements come from and where I rep grind. Getting full exalted with everything didn't take long for me at all with the tabards. Besides, I couldn't stand doing that same zone over and over just for some mounts.

Why do you constantly doubt people who time and time again have shown they know more about the game than you probably ever will?
As others have said, and backed it up, the rep gain Rankkor quoted is correct.
@OP
It's really not that slow to grind rep using the tabard and dungeon runs. Whilst queuing you should do starter zone quests. (Also worth noting that if this is something that will take you a few days to do, the fishing and cooking dailies in each city provide a nice chunk of rep for that faction.)

Even using the tabard method, you'd need to create 2 toons (one horde, one alliance) and then either do the entire DK starting zone or level a toon of any other class up to 15. So it's still not as easy as just "collect tabards, queue for LFD".
people who time and time again have shown they know more about the game than you probably ever will
Where are these people? I've never seen them around here.
