Well Duh!
I'd tell you to piss off too if you tried to do anything from an obviously compromised account.
I'm not sure how things work in your mind, but showing ID to prove your identity to get a stolen item back is a perfectly legitimate and expected procedure.
Not sure what the point of this post is, but again it's another perfect opportunity to tell people BUY AN AUTHENTICATOR!

Obvious advice I know but I wish I had thought of it sooner
Whenever a company or an organization is dealing with an IT mechanism that has had it authentication process compromised they have perform identity verification via an out of band mechanism. AKA since you account was compromised you had to contact blizzard via phone, not in game and not off of battlenet. I am surprised the GMs didn't tell this up front.
My account got hacked once all it took to verifiy my identity was the original credit card number used to establish the account and knowledge based authentication.
But your story is a bit bizzare. It sounds to me like this was done by someone who knows you and wanted to cause your grief. Did you leave yourself logged in on your brother's PC?

Now you can just get the Authenticator APP for your phone. It is a must have.
