When ought a new player get the expansion packs?

Hello, my question is probably a dumb one, but I think the answer must be so obvious to experienced players that I'm having trouble finding it. I have the Battle Chest including Burning Crusades and Wrath of the Lich King, and my first character is now at level 66. If I bought Cataclysm or Mists of Pandaria now, would they do me any good? I had thought that one simply plays until reaching something that looks like an obvious "end" and, having "finished" the game, would get some sort of prompt to buy the next chapter. However, I've encountered NPCs telling tall tales about Deathwing and a bunch of Pandaren folks camped out behind Stormwind City. I can't learn Archaeology, but I can create Worgen & Pandaren characters, so I'm confused about which events have "already happened" lorewise.
Any advice on how to tell when I should buy the expansion packs would be most appreciated!

Lorewise it has all pretty much happened already. However, due to the nature of the expansions, you'll appear to be in a timeloop. Consider going to each expansion traveling back in time or something like that.
leveling up to 60 you'll be inside a Cataclysm changed world, the big bad guy being Deathwing at the time. Then you'll port back a long while to Outlands where Illidan/Kael`thas / Burning Legion and all are the enemies, though in "modern" times that's all been taken care of.
Then you're off to Northrend, after Outlands war is over, but before Cata happens.
Afterwards back to Cata etc.
However, if you're just leveling, you won't see an "obvious end", ever. You'll run out of quests, perhaps, finish off the quest storylines, but the "big ends" are raids. if you're leveling, you're not going to pick up a quest and go solo Illidan and Kael`thas. if you were stopping and doing all the raids (Unlikely and probably an effort of frustration), then you might "finish up" the stories of each expansion. But, even then, they wouldn't say "go buy Cata now to continue",
As far as characters go, had no idea they had unlocked the Worgen/Pandaren, never paid any attention to them.
And as far as when to buy expansions, it's really when you want to. Cata will let you fly in the original world, archaeology which you might enjoy. Quest content won't start til 80, though.
MoP has pet battles (not sure if you can do without MoP. I never got into them), and maybe some other stuff I'm forgetting, but the leveling content starts at 85.

Thank you, that is extremely helpful! I've been running around Outland for a while wondering when I am! :)
I'm wondering if this means that I don't ever meet the pre-Cata Big Bads? My raid finder says it unlocks at level 85, and that level can apparently only be reached with Cata.
(FYI: I can do pet battles with just the Battle Chest, but I haven't actually tried making a Panda character yet, since it seemed a bit likely to be awkward starting on a continent that is all for level 85+.)

You don't actually start on Pandaria when you make a Pandaren character ~ You start at a place called the wandering isle
The big thing that getting MoP would allow you to do right now, without leveling to 90, would be having the ability to create a monk character.
You could eventually meet the pre-cata big bads, by getting a group to manually go see them with you, or returning to them once your at the end of the game - there are some classic raiding guilds out there who will say do outlands raids at the proper level / expected gear, but those guilds are rare enough you would be lucky if your server has one

I know this is a week old but you would need Cataclysm if you want to be able to learn flying in old Azeroth (unlocked at level 60).
