To add to what Fel has said, if you upgrade your trial account through battlenet to the battlechest, you keep all the characters you've already created.
The purchasing order would be Battlechest (1-80) ---> Cataclysm (80-85) ---> Mists of Pandaria (85-90).
The Battlechest really is a good deal, particularly when it's on sale as it is at the moment. If you plan to continue playing, keep your eyes open for sales on the other two expansions. The launcher always advertises what the current sale is.
Since you're a brand new player, I really would recommend taking your time, reading the quest text and soaking it all in. Don't rush through the first time. Depending on how much play time you get in a week, the battlechest will provide you with enough content for a few months of play if you do all the available quests and dungeons before moving on, not to mention levelling professions, pet battles, archaeology, achievements etc.

You would access
https://us.battle.net
as Australia falls under the Oceanic Region which the US site manages.

If you are in Australia make sure to join a OCEANIC server... Otherwise you will end up in a US realm and probably never get a chance to raid properly.

Right, so essentially, to sum it up... you being in Australia can buy the $10 Battle Chest right now for $10 which gives you access to the original as well as Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King (max level 80, out of 90). If you decide later to upgrade further you can buy Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria. Prices will vary and if you're not in a rush you could just wait around for a sale on those expansions as well.
You'll get one month free with your $10 purchase of the Battle Chest and after that you'll pay the $14.99/mo membership fee or you can do the 3-month/6-month plans to save a few bucks a month. No idea if the amounts vary for AU money or not. You'll have to sign up and find out.
Good luck!

So you have zero problems with raiding at American raid times?
Isn't there 14+ hour time difference?
If it's 8 pm in the US, it should be roughly 10 am in Australia...
