Soloing old content as a Warlock
Return to board index
First a bit of perspective. I played a little bit of WoW back in 2007 and loved it, but had to quit because of real life issues.
I've been back since late 2011 (playing very,
slowly -- took me almost a year to ding 90 on my main) and I still love it! Needless to say I'm a very casual player, I do PUGs via Dungeon Finder and the odd Battleground.
However, this may be nostalgia talking, but I was underwhelmed by the Cataclysm and MoP content I got to play, and I find the endgame gear grind a real pain in the ass (not to mention the attitude of some people on endgame PUGs). I'm really hellbent on doing everything Classic, BC and LK have to offer PvE-wise, and I've even started leveling a couple of alts with this express purpose. But finding a stable group is a drag! I've been using my server's forum at battle.net as a sounding board but there seems to be very little interest on classic content.
So I've been thinking of doing it with my main, an Undead Aff/Demo Warlock. I've buddy-leveled him with my wife, who's playing an Undead BM/MM Hunter. Not the best duo ever (no plate wearers, no healers), but do we stand a chance of doing BC and LK endgame content?
I'd love to know whether anyone here's soloing old stuff on the 'lock, and whether anyone has any tips and tricks to offer. Thanks!
I'm no expert on 'locks, (I've just gotten mine to 85, and am now pushing to 90) But I do believe a good demo spec'd lock could easily solo mos classic, burning crusade, and maybe even some lich king endgame content. Especially if you spec int the Grimoire of Supremacy, and Glyph into Dark apotheosis (Glyph of Demon Hunting) which gives you a pretty solid tanking "stance" (10% reduced physical damage taken, 15% reduced magical damage taken, threat generation increased by 500%) it also changes some of the demonology spells over to their metamorphasis counterparts, gives you a taunt instead of soulshatter, a Damage mitigation buff, (I think at least, it's been a while since I've needed it) and some other very useful things. I guess to put it into perspective, I've used the Dark apotheosis stance several times in PUGs when the tank dies on a boss or something, and 9 times out of 10, I come out just fine after downing the boss. Not sure if this helps or not, but give it a shot, and have fun running all that old content, it's always a good time and some of that stuff is just epic :D
First I would like to suggest using OpenRaid. They often have events for old content, there are a few old content guilds out there.
Second, my main is a lock. I find that I can solo most old content. Some of the Ulduar 25s are a tad more frustrating than the others. Once I get into ICC, I need a second or third person because of fight mechanics. There are some fights here and there that due to mechanics really aren't soloable, though many blood dks would tend to argue that point. While I do love demo, and I do love aff, I have come to have a fondess for the self healing that destro has to offer. I hadn't played destro since early Wrath until I did the green fire quest.
Being that you both are pet classes, I don't see any need for the tanking abilities that demo has to offer though it is fun. The Voidlord is a respectable tank and has served me well and allowed for full dps so I would recommend Grimoire of Supremacy as well as Sacrificial Pact, Shadowfury, and Kil'jaeden's Cunning, for any spec you choose. I have done the old content in all three specs.
I also have a 90 hunter (and a druid and dk, but that doesnt really apply) that I have completed some old content on, though Onyxia as is far as I have gone. I don't play MM so I have nothing to offer, but I find BM is a strong spec for old content.
So, in short, you two should well enough though you might be frustrated at times and if you decide to do BWL, whoever clicks the orb for the first boss needs to dismiss the pet first.
For the sake of clarity I suppose I should add what I have cleared solo as a lock, much of which, I did as affliction. All of Vanilla, all of BC, Naxx10 and most of 25, Most of Uld10HMs up to and not including Algalon though I didn't try, I saved my lockouts for Herald of the Titans runs, a decent amount of Uld25 including some accidental HMs. I always take a paladin with me for ICC as he is working for the legendary so no solo there. We have however been 3 manning Cata raids, if that ever interests you.
I too love soloing old content, and as a warlock, I've solo'd MC, BWL, AQ20, AQ40 (up to twins), SSC, TK, Mag, Gruul, BT, Ony, Naxx 10 man, first couple of bosses in Uld 10 man, and Heroic 25man Marrowgar. I haven't tried soloing any more content since I was ilevel 463, so with the updated gear, this list may be expanded by some.
By far, probably my biggest achievement was soloing heroic 25 man marrowgar because of his fight mechanics... you can't have your demon tank him because you'll end up getting spiked and die. Therefore, you need to be tanking the boss as a clothie. Using your demon hunting glyph, you can manage your shield and heals effectively to kill him. It takes time, but he drops a decent amount of weapons that can be vendored for a good amount of money. I had to bring in a friend to continue on into heroic 25 man, however we got stopped on Saurfang. Theoretically, it is possible to solo Saurfang as a warlock with the demon hunting glyph because you have a taunt that you can taunt the boss off your demon with so he isn't healed, but you need to be able to have enough dps to kill him, which is where I failed. I solo'd him on my prot warrior, but that was because I was able to absorb his mechanics.
As for the other raids, for the most part, you can solo them as destro. I solo'd all of BT as destro including Illidan. I believe I used demo for bloodboil though. It's been a while, so excuse me of I'm mistaken.
Warlocks have a ton of self-utility if you know how to use them. You can dps, heal, and tank all while hurting the attackers in the process, which makes warlock a triple threat. Hope this helps!
I've recently soloed every raid up to and including ICC. The only bosses I have had trouble with were Val in ICC -- had to hire a healer for that one, the first boss in Sunwell --mechanics, and Lady V in SSC --pain in the butt. Other than that, and I may be missing something, I have had no problems. A lock and a hunter running together should be able to destroy everything in their path, as hunters already are capable of soloing some pretty tough stuff. Sometimes, as with Thorim in Ulduar, you may need to be a bit creative.
Is it possible to solo all the achievements for
Glory of the Ulduar Raider (10 player)
as a warlock? I have the 25 achievement but if its possible I would like to solo this one.
To answer your question, yes it is possible. I did it on my old lock. I have two. But it all depends on the minion you use. When soloing raids, I like to use Felguard, mainly because he acts as a tank (just keep him alive with health funnel XD ).
TL;DR - Lots of stuff can be soloed.
There is a great thread on MMO-champion here:
And a google docs spreadsheet showing all completed solos by warlocks, some with youtube links or gearing requirement estimates:
