Typically, you want however much spirit you need to retain enough mana for a fight. There's not really a universal softcap.
If you find you're healing as much as you can and have too much mana, get some other secondary stats. If you are going oom very quickly, stack more spirit.
LFR is a great place to test your mana consumption.

Hi all,
I don't know if it can help, but i just noticed that i can't got over 6000 in mana regeneration when in combat as a holy Priest. I've like 10k spirit right now, and if i add spirit, the mp5 does not increase.
Maybe there's a cap for the mp5?
(sry for my english ^^')

Yes, I've noticed there is a cap, and I play a Shadow Priest with the same value of 6000. Stacking Spirit will not help your MP/5 in combat.
Priests have other mechanics to regain Mana.

I OS disc heal in ToT, I am running with about 14000 spirit and I feel very comfortable with my regen, almost to the point of needing to drop some for int or crit. Though I am about to start heroics so I will probably stay with "too much" for now.

On my disc priest in ToT 10m, I'm soft capping my spirit at 9800 + spirit flask. This is giving me somewhere around 11.5k ICR. It seem to be plenty especially with the big heals and bubbles I get from the excess mastery. I do not use the talent for shadow fiend, I prefer the instant flashes. I seem to do just fine mana wise on most fights with proper timing of mana cds. Also, (I know its bad, please forgive me) for direct healing, flash is my main heal. As a couple notes per my play style/gear. I still have the old 2p that reduces mana cost of flash by 20% (spirit will go up when that goes away), I do not use the glyph of penance, because I don't often feel forced to move, and like the lower cost, and I do feel that if I end the fight over 20% mana I either didn't heal hard enough or I wasted stats on spirit, so if you like a full mana bar, don't follow my ways. Also, I know someone will spout up about how wrong I am so I will say this. I'm throwing 85-125k hps, depending on fight. at a 500 ilvl in ToT 10m, so, it works for me.
Also, if your talking spirit for holy, I don't know holy personally, but I know some good holy priests and they seem to like about 13-15k spirit.

Hiya,
Typically you want to have enough until you are comfortable. For instance during patches 5.0-5.2 I tried to get as much as possible. After you get access to your Legendary Meta Gem (LMG) you should be able to drop as much as you want. I'm currently at 543 item level and I have 9,000 or so spirit.
Take whatever makes you feel like you need to be a good healer.

The big difference is IMO whether you have
Courageous Primal Diamond
(legendary gem) or not.
My primary spec is not heal so I can't give you the exact numbers, and when I heal it's smite discipline, which is not mana intensive - but with cca. 9k mana I went from constantly oom to comfortable.

About 10k, going with improved shadowfeind, int food and int flask.

Given I offspec healing, I find myself wanting a little more spirit than normal (running with about 11k), mostly due to having too much haste in my healing set. Timing
Rapture
procs isn't as beneficial as before, but it does give you a free absorb and should be abused consistently. Likewise, using
Shadowfiend
/
Mindbender
and
Hymn of Hope
efficiently will help.
Remember,
Shadowfiend
/
Mindbender
take a snapshot of your current haste and return mana / deal damage accordingly.
Bloodlust
/
Heroism
Time Warp
affect your fiend if the priest already has the buff, but won't affect the fiend if cast when the fiend is already out.
