Gather prof for moneymaking?

I've run quite short on money, so I was wondering if I should pick up a gather prof for farming some mats. However I can't help, but wonder everything seems quite cheap when it comes to mats. Epic shoulder enchants 25g etc. ?
Is Mining/Herbalism/Skinning really worth it, what can I make money on with them?

Depends. Usually herbalism has been best money makes but now it doesn't really make money when it comes to what it was in WotLK and Cata. But some rare minerals are expensive. Best money maker is Mining atm. You can make lots of gold by selling TBC ores. But it depends from realm ofc... So I guess Mining is best atm (stack of Fel Iron = 150g on my realm)

I think you have a real problem. Mats for the crafts are the easiest to acquire that I can remember their being since I started play in 2.3. That has pretty much cratered prices on my server. You may have to start running dailies till you puke unless someone has a better idea. Good Luck.

Have a look at your AH, in my realm battle pets sell very well (just sold 2 from archaeology for 2-3k each), high level enchants sell for anything from 1 to 5k, also rare gems that need to be prospected go for 50-100g each. you might find some other ways to make some money :) meanwhile dailies are a sure way till u level up whatever profession you've picked.

It really will depend on your sever. It seems to me, mats sell better on weekend when people are leveling alts. Also, since so many classes wear leather and mail - sham, druid, hunter, monk - you really will almost always find someone to buy your skins.
Tush mentioned mining and Fel Iron ... I gotta say, this is super frustrating as a player to try to skill mining through Fel Iron because of the over-farming of it. I actually will not purchase Fel Iron as a form a protest about how ruthless the farming is. I'll buy other ores on occasion though, so wish you luck with it!
In my opinion, picking a gathering profession that has a passive effect that is useful to you might help you like it more, i.e. tanks like to mine for the extra stamina, hunters skin for the crit, and nothing wrong with an unholy dk herbalist :) But supposedly if you get into big raiding or something you will want to ditch your gathering because your soulbound crafted things you can do to yourself will "outweigh" any gathering profession.

If you have a druid that is maxed and you put mining and herb on them and fly places to get the herbs and mining nodes you can make a lot. I know on Area 52 Horde some of the cata stuff goes for 80g a stack and sense you have both of those professions you are able to pick both items up at the same time. The reason I say a druid is because they do not have to dismount to mine ect and therefore you save the 1.5 secons and every now and then some combat with a low lvl

I've only ever played on Twisting Nether, so I can not speak for elsewhere. Where I am both herbing and mining seem to be profitable if done right, however, I would say mining goes better and is more smooth.
Herbs, with the exception of lotus (which stays about 70g per) drop really low most of the time, you can literally buy thousands for .75-1.5g per. However, around about the time of the darkmoon faire, you cant post enough at 4.5-6g per herb. So its very spikey, but cant be profitable.
Mining on the other hand, generally, GI ore will sell for about 3.75-4g per ore, with some fluctuation day by day, and some people selling for 2g per ore no matter what the price. However, as a man that loves to cut gems, I employ 2 ore farmers, who both average out to making about 8k per day farming ores for me. So it can be decent, but not godly. Also, as per their averages, my farmers are making about 2500g per hour. Plus I let them keep their trillium which sells for about 15-20g per ore or 100g per bar.
