Elemental Shaman DPS and Rotation
Return to board index
I've been an on-again-off-again WoW player for a number of years. I predominately played tank classes which I really enjoyed. However, during Cata I leveled a shaman to see what the others roles were like. i predominately raided as a resto shaman and never paid much attention to the dps side of things.
When MoP came out, I figured that a strong dps spec and set of gear would be invaluable for doing dailies and the like. I went Elemental as a nice change from tanking/melee and found I really like it. However I've come to realize just how hard it is to maximize a characters dps and stay ahead on the dps meters. In my current gear I am only hitting about 60-70k dps depending on the fight. I've seen plenty of lesser geared players comfortably beat that. I've looked up guides and used Mr.Robot to help optimize my gear but I cannot see where I am going wrong.
If there are any season veterans of the Elemental class able to give me any input I will include my character and rotation. :)
Rotation Priority (Single Target) >> Place Searing Totem (ensure it stays up throughout the fight) >> Flame Shock (Refreshing on the last tick) >> Unleashed Elements and Lava Blast when possible >> Elemental Blast >> Lightning bolt spam
I am using Lava Blast whenever Fulmination procs and casting Earth Shock at 7 stacks of lightning shield or so.
<<< Character Armory >>>
i'm definitely not a pro (resto main spec), so someone correct me if i'm wrong:
first, i think you're mixing up
, but that's not important.
second, i believe UE is something we ignore as elemental. i know i don't have it on my bars at all because i have lightning bolt glyphed.
you didn't mention your fire buddy, but i assume you use it on cooldown?
flame shock is ok to refresh a little sooner. best i can remember is <3 seconds normally or <2 seconds during lust/hero.
the purple gem in your helm is an odd choice; i would use int/hit instead.
you have no major glyphs at all?
is a great choice, and many times
Glyph of Chain Lightning
You're also missing a few enchantments especially one for your weapon which is key.
I also agree with marklartank regarding Unleash Elements. I don't have it on my action bars either. It's a waste of a global cooldown and the little buff it provides to Lava Burst doesn't compare to a Lightning Bolt cast which helps stack Fulmination and has a chance to proc your mastery.
Also, get yourself some Major Glyphs. I can't live without Unleashed Lightning. That glyph has spoiled me. I can never go back to being a turret again.
Keep in mind when both Fulmination maxes and Lava Surge proc's, make sure you are casting Lava Burst first. It proc's Clearcasting which buffs your next two spells by 10%(?) and gives them a chance to crit. That goes beautifully with a full-stacked Earth Shock.
Hey guys, thanks for the input!
I just figured that UE's boost to Lava Blast made it a pretty neat combo. It was making my rotation feel a little too mechanical though. I'll have to run some tests on a training to see how it feels without it.
I must have been asleep when I socketed that blue gem in my helm. I'll make sure to change it! :)
Any time Lava Blast is off cooldown or has proc, I cast it, though before I was waiting a moment or two to queue it with UE so that was probably valuable dps seconds lost too.. /Imanidiot
Thanks for the input guys! If there's any other tips or tricks you've found let me know! :)

Another reason you want to cast Lava Burst immediately, is because there have been times where I've gotten a Lava Surge proc with three consecutive Flame Shock ticks (or at least close enough that I've been able to cast Lava Burst in three consecutive global cooldowns). If you wait, you might miss out on them.
First of all; yay for you going elemental! Our spec is terribly underrepresented, if you ask me.
Since raiding in MoP with my shaman, I often got very frustrated because I felt like I was doing everything right but found my DPS lacking, finding myself struggling to be competitive with the other DPSers, ranged or otherwise. If this sounds familiar to you, then I have good news; hang in there and you will soon see the fruits of your labour.
First, I'd like to echo my colleagues by suggesting to ditch UE; it's a straight up loss of DPS, and no one wants that (shame though, because it offered an interesting mechanic).
Secondly, glyphs. As said by the others, you seem to be lacking your majors, so I will just say:
Glyph of Unleashed Lightning
: This glyph will make all your casting friends look at you in envy as you dart about shooting electrified death from your hands whilst darting around, dodging all kinds of nasties and whatnot. Blizzard has even admitted they regret implementing this glyph because it is THAT good; capitalise on their error.
Glyph of Chain Lightning
: This glyph makes you the best AOE DPS in the universe. You will be able to pull off sustained 200k DPS and up on decent AOE groups with this bad boy. Fun fact: there are quite a few heavy AOE encounters in MoP raids... have fun. ;)
Now, this last one requires a bit of explanation and is up to personal preference.
Glyph of Fire Elemental Totem
: You know how we rule at burst, right? Well, this glyph allows us to burst more often. If used right (i.e. a nice little burst phase), this is a straight up DPS boost.
But wait, it gets better. You may have noticed that a lot of us use Elemental Blast as our 90 talent, and I can't blame them. However, I would suggest you to try Primal Elementalist, especially with the aforementioned glyph. With the glyph and talent, we have gone from supbar lightning turrets to mobile harbingers of doom. Seriously, it's amazing, just make sure you remember your ABC (
As for your rotation, you seem to have it down, but I'm going to shamelessly copy TotemSpot/Elitist Jerks (kudos to them, make sure to check out their Elemental Shaman guide for even more info too!). With Primal Elementalist, our rotation has simplified due to the 'loss' of Elemental Blast:
1) Searing Totem:
maintain at all times, when Fire Elemental is on CD or can't be used, you can often drop it before a pull.
2) Flame Shock:
keep this up at all times, baring in mind the shared cooldown with Earthshock.
highest damage spell, based on cast speed and whatnot (see EJ for more), just make sure this is ALWAYS on cooldown, prioritise this with Flame Shock.
4) Lightning Bolt/Chain Lightning
: This is our filler, cast Lightning Bolt whenever you don't have anything else to cast (i.e. when Lavaburst is on cooldown).
Lightning Bolt will often be our most used spell, making out 30%-45% of our damage, depending on your luck. Use Chain Lightning whenever there's more than 2 targets, but make sure you keep up your Flame Shock and Lavabursting. On two targets, just use your single target nuke (i.e. Lightning Bolt and what not). On 4 or more targets, the gloves are off. Drop an Earthquake, Magma Totem with Totemic Projection (or Fire Elemental if you're feeling cheeky... he/she actually does AOE damage hehehehe) and spam the $%^& out of your Chain Lightning (or Lava Beam if you've popped Ascendence because you want to show off). On big pulls, with Ascendence up, you can be doing anything from 300k to 400k and upwards. Seriously, we own AOE. Make sure to target the highest health target when spamming chain lightning and revert back to your single target nuke when only 2 targets are left after your ANNIHILATION.
Ok, now, lastly, stats. Having a quick look at your Armory, I noticed a few things:
1) You have 18.45% hit. with our hit cap being 15%. Personally, I make sure I stay between 15%-14.50% hit. My miss chance at 14.54% is near negligible.
2) Reforge your spirit/hit to haste if there is no haste on the item, mastery if there is. Never reforge away from haste or mastery as these are our priority stats, especially haste. Seriously, you should stack the *!@# out of it. One can never have enough haste as a shaman. Reforge crit into haste/mastery when your're around the hit cap.
3) Get Windsong on your weapon, it ought to be pretty affordable.
Oh and one last thing; I don't see a lot of shamans doing this but use your Earth Elemental, especially with Primal Elementalist. He's a little damage boost and you will barely use earth totems anyways. Just make sure to turn off his taunt ability, your tanks may get annoyed otherwise.
That's it really, feel free to have a look at my Armory to see what I've done with my little lightning monster. I'm currently sustaining around 80k to 120k DPS, depending on the fight. Our class is pretty gear intensive, so you will see a significant change in your DPS with every item upgrade. With some luck and practice, you will soon be giving those pesky warlocks and a mages a real fight on the damage/DPS meters, unless there's lots of AOE, in which case nothing can touch you. ;)
Feel free to come chat any time as well, questions or not.
All the best and good luck!

Hey Tharuk, thank you for such a detailed response.
I'm not entirely sure why my hit rating is so much about the cap. I used Mr.Robot to help optimize my gear and according to that I was ever so slightly below the 15%!
I've been reading some posts and some people seem to be muttering that Mastery is greater than haste after a certain value of haste?
When I'm next online, I'll make sure to pick up those glyphs everyones mentioned and maybe run some dungeons with P.E instead of EB! :)
Thanks again guys :)
Very welcome :) I've been reading up on so much theorycrafting and started some testing on my own (due to my previous frustrations) and am more then happy to 'report' my findings. I'm hoping to write a comprehensive guide some time and post it on the forums. Elemental shaman is such a cool class (and an amazing addition to any raid group due to a wide variety of buffs and utility) and it deserves some more love/attention.
As for the hit cap; I've noticed Armory showing a higher hit value than the in-game pane, I'm not sure what's up with that, but since you're aware of Mr Robot's theory, you'll be fine. Just bare in mind that Mr Robot isn't God, and it sometimes pays off to do some experimenting of your own, sometimes to better effects.
As for the haste vs mastery dilemma... I don't know. I managed to upgrade some items yesterday and am currently sitting on about 23% haste solo. I'd argue the weight of haste and mastery is somewhat dependent on your talent and race choices. If you're a troll, mastery is probably a little bit better due to your racial. But having echo makes haste a little bit better again. I don't really know what to think of this really. I'd probably just argue to balance them both out a bit and make sure you don't neglect mastery too much.
Please do let me know what you think of PE.
I just figured that UE's boost to Lava Blast made it a pretty neat combo.
yeah, it does make sense and of course it does make your LvB hit harder. the problem is the GCD you spend casting UE is too costly. the damage that UE does on it's own, plus the added damage to your LvB (or FS) is less than what you'd get by simply using that GCD on a LB filler.
it would be more interesting for ele if the
was baked into the base spell. in that case you could get off a fresh boosted FS + 5 or 6 boosted LB/LvB casts. it really doesn't seem like it would be a hard change, and it would be a good way to give elemental a needed dps boost.
Oh, and a bit of additional advice,
is like a second bloodlust. It's easy enough to get and will give your burst marco an extra bit of zing.
Caaboose - US-Uther
doesn't it count as your potion use in combat?
doesn't it count as your potion use in combat?
point to yes.
doesn't it count as your potion use in combat?
point to yes.
probably not a good idea for raiding then, though it would be nice for 5-mans.
Let me put it to you this way:
Potion of the Jade Serpent
provides the same benefit (and it's the potion you would be using as an elemental shaman), but you either need to farm the materials or purchase it from the auction house. Even if you pre-pot, it's still saving you half the gold/resources.
for 5-mans, yes. for raids, no.
it's not the same benefit; which would you rather have, 4000 haste or 4000 int for 25 seconds? a
elemental shaman should be using the int potion for both pre-pot AND in-fight pot. the mats are really, really cheap.
now, i could see using the coffee cup on something like twin emperors where the pull hardly matters, but that's about it.
Unleashed Elements is a waste of dps as elemental, I'm not sure if you knew this.
Your priority for rotation wise for single target:
on CD and consume
when you have nothing else and use
procs when its up
There is also
which you can time for using on Elemental Blast, Lava Surge, or Fulmination although I'm not 100% sure on fulmination consuming elemental focus.
For multitarget I honestly just drop magma totem and spam chain lightning and using fulmination procs as you generate them fast.
You can drop Earthquake to if you know the pack is staying stationary.
Stat priority is Intellect > 15% spell hit > haste>mastery >crit.
Well, the good news is, I tested it out for myself and you can use both the Kafa press and a Potion of the Jade Serpent during the same encounter. So, you don't have to choose between a potion and the press.
really? wow, in that case it's kind of mandatory then.
of course, now i have to camp some rare spawn ><
has some pretty nice dps guides, including a section for rotation. That's the one i'm using...
