Targeting friendly NPCs

I have a quest that requires me to cast a spell on friendly NPCs (multiple times- for instance, heal 12 fallen warriors or whatever). Neither "target nearest friend" nor "target nearest friendly player" works. Is there a way to target friendly NPCs with a key binding?
Also, what is the difference between "friend" and "friendly player"?

I think generally you'd just make an explicit target macro. I've never bound those "target friendly ____" actions, myself.

If you have target tracking turned on on your minimap, you'll be able to figure out what/where the game picked pretty easily.

Did you check the key binding menu?

I'm assuming those are the names of the keybinds that don't work.

Right. If you want to target a specific friendly NPC, I thinkg you have no choice but to macro it with the name of the NPC.
