What am I doing wrong?
Return to board index
Ok, so I'm sure a lot of people are going to call me a n00b, and some may call me a troll, but I honestly have no idea what I"m doing wrong. Affliction locks are supposed to be great for PvE right now, and I can't seem to get off the bottom of the charts for DPS (according to the add-on Recount).
Me On Armory (with glyphs and talents listed)
My equipment is not great by any means since we just really started raiding. I've gem stoned up everything but my newest raid find (Which I will) and have even tried some of the re-forgings since so many sources promote master for us 'locks.
My rotation is:
Curse of the Elements, Haunt, Soul Shard + Soul Swap (applying all DoTs), Malefic Grasp until I can haunt again. If it is a boss I usually rinse and repeat this process for quite some time, but if there are multiple targets I will use Soul Swap to get my DoTs off before they expire and dump them on the other target. I use Soul Drain instead of Malefic Grasp if target is at less than 20% and will often use it to finish off trash mobs to get my shards back. I also have some engineering buffs I use to increase my stats temporarily as well as summon my demon on bosses whenever it is off cooldown.
I know I sometimes forget to cast my self-buffs, but I don't think that is what is causing me to be at the BOTTOM of the DPS charts every time. Please give me advice! I'm not new to MMOs, but I've only had 9 months with WoW so this is my first time really doing raids "at-level". I wouldn't consider myself a stupid person or a bad player but at the last raid I did someone commented on my performance it was down right embarrassing. :-P
Thanks for the help!
First a couple things I noticed. You said you summon your demon sometimes. Hopefully you mean your Doomguard. If your summoning your pet, don't. It's a dps loss.
Second, you said this...
I know I sometimes forget to cast my self-buffs
Every once in a while I understand, but to be an elite raider you can't miss this stuff. This is what separates the quality raiders from the raiders that just get bye. Refreshing your dots and getting haunt up when you have your procs up is huge. It will be a difference you will notice.
Your also missing enchants on your wrist, shoulders, legs, weapon, and waist.
Also real quick, what kind of numbers are you pulling? Afflictions strength is not just single targeting a boss. It's dotting multiple targets. All your rotational stuff seems ok. Make sure you are always casting.
So my assessment is this. No your not bad. You seem to understand your class. So I think your missing the little things. The little things add up. Refresh your dots when you get key procs. When moving, keep casting. Also, this is HUGE! Know the fights. Don't be another LFR guy. Know where to stand and know what the boss is doing. By knowing this you can react appropriately and you will know when to refresh dots.
I think from what you've said made a lot of sense. I have enchanted most of my items, gemmed up my new piece of equipment, and am waiting to raid again to see if it helps.
I use my talent that absorbs my normal demon-companion, but occasional forget to summon the Doomguard. I'm thinking that is just going to take some practice to remember since I rarely needed him before.
Also, I think you're right about the mutli-targetting. In raids I Would focus on one mob at a time...I just practiced jumping from mob-to-mob dummies and got an instant kick to my DPS. I was pulling around 20-22k and jumped to 26-28k just with the enchantments and the multi-targetting.
Thanks for the advice and the encouragement! I've gone from being nervous to trying a raid again, to excited about seeing how all my changes are going to do. :-)
Always use your Doomguard. Every fight. It's 1 click and he does great damage. Just make sure it's at a time in the fight when the boss will be targetable for a while. And he reacts to your buffs I believe too. So take advantage of that.
Some other advice, to learn multi dotting, start by just soul swapping dots on a second target. After you get comfortable with that, try to keep at least Agony up 100%. And slowly learn to keep all your dots on 2 targets, or 3, etc. Also, while learning, you have the glyph of everlasting affliction, which extends your dots (although at a damage cost). So that will help with timing you dot refreshes.
Group up your different procs. Prepot always, and time your next potion with key moments in the fight. And use your demon soul, etc. Timing things like this is really key to squeezing everything you can out of that lil' gnome.
Also make sure you have a good DOT timer. I use forteXorcist. It's old, but still works for me. If you want an advance timer, try this,
What this does it it monitors your procs and the effect it will have on your dots. It tells you if it's worth refreshing dots and the gain you will get. I won't explain it to much, so read the description in the link. This is an AMAZING affliction addon.
Also if you haven't done it, learn to use simcraft. It takes time to really learn what it is doing, but it is a very, very helpful tool.
Curse of elements > Soulburn + SS > Haunt > Dark Soul (Use as often as possible) > MG.
I will say this again. DARK SOUL ON EVERY CD. Along with Doomguard.
Another thing, the haste breaking point is 4717 for extra ticks on your dots.
Enchant and gem everything you can. Replace your trinkets soon, other trinkets with better stats also have great procs.
As you're getting more and more gear, try and not get the cloth stuff with crit on it. Once you get your haste breaking point, you want to stack mastery.
Hope this helps.
Just one thing to reiterate on from Darongo8, stacking mastery can make a big difference.
My warlock was stuck on the dps front, I could only get around 37k when others around me were doing a lot more. I reset all my reforging, logged out/in and refreshed my AskMrRobot page, it suggested reforging a lot of my stats into mastery, and as a consequence, I can now regularly hit over 50k on a single target.
I was quite surprised how much difference reforging made.
