Would PVP be the correct form to ask questions about pet battling ?
( or is ther e somewhere else on wow-head to go? )
Does anyone have any idea as to where to get a good overview as to what attacks do best against which opponents?
Is there a link you can post?
Plus the unknowns.... like I'm hearing that to cause "bleeding" this is the same as getting your opponent under 50% health .... If that's true, then what is blinding? Is this caused by some move or is it like bleeding and at some arbitrary health value... confusing...I know...
Plus there are Poor, Common, Uncommon, and Rare versions of companion / Battle Pets ... They can have better of worse start values when you first catch them but what happens at level 25 (which I'm told is the highest level a BP can get too,,,) Are they all the same or are some still better that others.
What about vender bought pets are they (poor, common, uncommon, & rare) too?
When pets are dueled they don't gain exp ... however they can when fighting critters and gain exp ...
I guess during "official" battles they can gain exp too ... are there battle brackets? if so how are they formed? like every 5 levels? 10 levels? or are there no brackets....
You may find the answers you're looking for in the Guides section of Wowhead.
wrote a great guide,
Pet Battles and You - A Trainer's Manual
which goes over a lot of material about rarity of pets, strengths & weaknesses in pairings, etc.
Battle Pets and Where to Find Them
can also help you out in learning more about locating pets for your collection.
The only question you asked that's not addressed in those guides is about battle brackets. As of yet there are no breakdowns by level, as you only PvP pet battle against other players when you come across them (rather than queuing for battles like a battleground).
XP is gained, as you note, when battling the NPC pet trainers or in fights against wild pets but not in PvP fights. This is to avoid players using each other to level rather than actually going out into the world. Pets must be within a certain level range to earn xp against an opponent, but that's addressed in the first guide linked.
PvP = Pet versus Pet.
