Hey guys,
Wowhead forums are some of the cleanest and most user-friendly on the web. No really, I love using these forums because when you come here, everything from the lay out of the threads, to the side bars, even the fonts used are all uniform and neat.
One of the reasons for this is because users are very limited to what they can use when post. No use of embedded images that stretch and break frames, there are only 2 font sizes available, and you can type in any color you want, as long as that color is light grey =P. The limitations lead to very uniform posting, and uniform posting is clean and easy to read.
BUT!
There are times, when I wish we could have a little more access to formating and features.
Patch 4.0.1.
Dungeons
Headings! Its pretty funny to watch
how we play with the existing code
to try and make headings. They don't look as nice as the
moderators stuff
, thats for sure.
New loot cards!
So either the wow head light grey on dark grey color formating of posts has burned itself into my eyes, or its a really nice color system and my eyes don't mind reading lines and lines of it. But the color is not always a bad thing in moderation.
Moderation (quantity) is really the word that should be accentuated the most. A post where every even line is pink, and every odd line is neon yellow, or a post where the entire thing is written in 72 font size, would incredibly annoying, and make the very pretty pretty forums, not so pretty. But the guides that some users put together, like
Priest
,
Paladin
, or
General
, could be enhanced greatly with some more access to BBCode that is already in place.
Would it be possible to unlock some of these code for users that would use it responsibly? Users who have been posting guides and other useful information on these forums that keep users coming back?
Cheers,
Hat

We've been poking around at the idea of a new rank for those who apply to be guide writers--either people with stickied guides or who want to write guides like Perculia's. This would be included in that rank. This something we'll revisit next week and try to figure out if we'll do it or not. Your suggestion definitely has a lot of merit and I agree, we just need to figure out the logistics and we're busy (plus this weekend is a 3 day holiday weekend for us staff!). =)

Throwing my vote in for this as well. I think it's a really great idea. I don't think these people should have text any different color than everyone else, just access to the extended BBCODE.

We all perish the thought. I think it was going to be more of a selection than an automated thing.

A serious request if something along the lines of what's suggested in this thread goes through is that we gain access to a way to make graphs. I'm working on a thread that contains a lot of data and a way to present the info in a more palatable/visual form would be wonderful.
Something along the lines of the progress bars that moderators use would be great. I'd ask for the ability to link images of graphs but I totally understand that you want to maintain Wowhead's clean visual style.

<div class="progressbar" style="width:
XX

<div class="progressbar-text">
Text on bar here
</div>
<div class="progressbar-
repX
" style="width:
XX
%"></div></div>
Width XX's are your own percentage numbers to size the bar
RepX are the 8 colors that a Rep bar can be. lol Rep0-Rep7
Secont Wigth XX is how much of the bar you want filled with color
I really love how this website is coded. And I really love Google Chrome's "Inspect Element" feature.

We're still reading feedback here, so keep giving us ideas... should be able to talk about it with devs soon, Wowhead News just took up a lot of our recent time ;) Just wanted to let you guys know we didn't forget increased options for code and/or guide writer privs.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Ashelia##DELIM##

Ah no worries, you told us that you revisit it sometime this week, and that only means that you'll start conversations with the dev's. Just keeping this alive for feedback is fine right now. If you guys deiced to do anything, I not only expect it to take some time, but demand it too. Take your time and do things right, everyone here will love you even more. ^_^
Thanks for the replies.

Also, would the guide-writer privileges extend to prolific fic writers? A lot of the potential options would help quite a bit.

Thanks for the update.
Since you're asking for suggestions I would ask for . Since it would be guide writers gaining access to these extra layout options, can be very effective in guides as ably demonstrated by
kangi
.
Also, would make typing out tables a little quicker. bold and centred is already achievable so it would just be a minor time-saving addition though if you wanted to make also make that cell's border a little heavier too then that would be great.
As hatman555 first said though, headings would really differentiate a guide (or other work that someone has really spent some time on) from regular forum threads. Just that addition would make a big difference in my opinion.
Keep up the good work!

Given that I think we're all accepting that this would be a hand-selection process, I think simply just unlocking the entirety of the BBCODE as exposed to super-users of the forum would be reasonable.
That said, the only thing that might be of concern would be if a user with these privileges had their account compromised. I know that my account password here probably isn't as good as it could be*. Do you guys have strong password requirements for blue or green posters already?
@The post heading thing ... a nice little book icon would be nice
:)
.
*Well, it is now that I said that publicly. Natch.

I approve of this idea.
While it's good that, as hatman says, the BBCode isn't available too everyone (imagine trolls making thread upon thread with text in varying colors? *shudder), the mods aren't the only ones who writes guides.
If nothing else, it could be made available to guides and threads of the Mods' choosing after it is posted (I'm by no means a computer genius so I've no idea if it's possible, but I'm assuming it is), and as such could be edited to look better.
For example, there are several guides in each sub-forum with very insightful contents. These would do good with a little "make-up", so to speak.
