All right, so I've read all five volumes of Curse of the Worgen...and gotta say, it was well done; but expected from the Wildstorm company. The comics were divided between the 'present', which started 4 days before the start of the worgen starting zone, and the past, during the War of the Satyr.
Big points here for the past:
Druids who choose to follow the Wolf form in the far past, were called Druids of the Pack at first, and the Feral form(wolf) was considered to be vicious, violent and incredibly crude and a hazard for allies as much as it was for the enemies. The form was used often during the War of the Satyrs, which occurred a few thousand years after the Sundering, when the sons of Xavius attempted to get revenge for his 'death'. The Form itself was based Goldrinn and his own madness against Elune....and how her attempts to soothe him, drove him far more insane, and that insanity leaked over to any who choose the Pack form. The Pack form caused Druids who had become lost in it to leave the Night elves and disappear into the wilds.
Apparently at some point, Malfurion tried to master the Wolf form but failed, and actually had to have Cenarius snap him out of it....as the Archdruid attacked the Demi-God. Anyways, back to the War: A pair of brothers, Arvell and Ralaar were two druids who fought for the Pack form to be used...and had a lot of problems; during several missions against the Legion, they ended up using the Wolf and attacking the Sentinels as well as the Legion, and injured Shandris at one point.
After making a promise to Malfurion to not use the Pack form, Arvell and his beloved, the Priestess Belysra, were ambushed, and Arvell was killed, but Ralaar saved Belysra...and the two raged against Malfurion before leaving to start up a plan of their own. Ralaar had Belysra create an artifact of Elune; called the Staff of Elune, which they then added the Fang of Goldrinn to it, forging.....the Scythe of Elune.
Ralaar had gathered up all of the lost Druids of the Pack, and using the power of the Scythe, called upon the power of Elune to 'soothe' the madness...and instead, transformed the Wolf form into the Worgen form...with Ralaar as the Alpha Prime. The new Druids, called the Druids of the Scythe, attacked a massive base of the Legion and destroyed them utterly...then turned on the Night Elves, and began a forced conscription of Night Elves into Worgen; and back then, when the Worgen were 'pure' the transformation was almost instantaneous. From there, the new Alpha revealed that everything he was intending had been for revenge on Malfurion for allowing Arvell to die.
Belysra, realizing she had been duped, traveled to Moonglade, where Malfurion, under the word of Cenarius, had created the Cenarius Circle, and a plan was forged to capture the Druids of the Scythe as they were still Night Elves at heart, and the Druids of the Circle could not bear to kill them. The plan was to seal them within the Wild Dream, under the Great Tree Daral'nir; where the madness would be tamed. To do so, they needed to use the Scythe, so by tricking Ralaar and his pack into meeting them there, Malfurion sealed them away, there to sleep for the rest of their lives....or so it was thought.
Turns out, this is where Argual gained the Worgen from: He ended up reaching out to them and pulled them from the Wild Dream into Azeroth again, and let it loose. During a flash back at the end of the final comic, we learn that the Worgen were used on the Scourge and had a far greater impact then we realized: They beat them back utterly, then turned on the Gilneas...which is how the Curse started, as those who were injured started up the original Curse spreading behind the Wall.
Points in the Present:
Main character of the present was Halford Ramsey, a detective studying a group of murders...and in the first issue, he ends up infected, learning the history of the Worgen from Ralaar, or Alpha Prime as he was known at that point. Apparently, just like in Northrend, there was a Wolf Cult; and they are the reason that starting zone of Gilneas happened like it did.
Genn and the other heroes of the Gilneas battles were seen, and the things in the present were merely another view of the starting zone. Over all, it was interesting to see how some of the Worgen fought to reclaim themselves, as well as seeing portions of the starting zone from a new perspective. Oh, and apparently there was a tunnel from Gilneas to Silverpine that went under the wall; which is how the Scythe of Elune ended up in the land, taken there by a recruit of Ralaar who had turned against him.
The comics end with the Battle for Gilneas City...which made me sad, sorta wanted to see that in comic form. Again, over all, the comics are excellent, nearly as good as the Ashbringer, so if you can, pick it up and read it; the Lore....the Lore has finally been explained, and I actually accept it: It works.
