What the hell happens during a Shadowstep?

That's basically it.
Is it magic?
Is it that they jump really far really fast like a ninja warrior charge?
Or is it meant to be a mystery that we'll never know?
On that note, could an explanation for how a literal shadow step is done explain how a literal killing spree is done?
And what is it about throwing smoke on the ground that allows a person to move some where really really fast? This doesn't really happen in WOW with smoke bomb but it happens all the time in movies.

How do people throw meteors out of their hands? How do people leap up cliffs? How do people survive an enormous axe to the face?

Magic(most likely fel magic)
Warriors charge in the air via kicking the air REALLY REALLY hard cause they REALLY don't like "that guy"
AND bad ass helmets which if they aren't wearing then I have no idea.
I am assuming you feel it may be magic that explains the rouge's mysterious gap closer?
mmmmmmmyes?

I always assumed it was this, anyway, and same goes for killing spree. Perhaps they're moving so fast it might as well look like they're teleporting.
As for the old, smoke bomb disappearing act, I guess its simply to make the character look more mysterious... its a pretty silly cliche IMO
:p
Hilarious link mon!

Subtlety rogues are pretty much ninjas and learned the forbidden technique to instantly teleport though the shadows. We're badass. I mean every time Death thinks we died, we make his head explode to cheat Death :D
Sounds like you are saying Sub rogues use shadow magic perhaps?
And cheat death could just be supper good reflexes or maybe something else all together.

That would never happen because Chuck Norris has no reason to strike himself.
That's right. I went there.

I always thought they teleported via shadows. Simple cantrip. Step into your shadow, step out of your opponent's. If you discredit that because rogues don't use magic, you could always say they move really fast from shadow to shadow, until they reach their target. Kind of like how Killing Spree moves really fast, except in Stealth.
I don't think we can discredit a rogue jumping in and out of shadows as much as we could discredit any other thing that was mentioned here.
I doubt any of us know an absolute answer to this question.
I actually like the idea of the rogue jumping in and out of shadows, but that would be labeled as magic.
But who says rogues can't use a little bit of magic?

Warning: Anime comparison (best I know / can find while drunk at 01:31 in the morning)
Shadowstep, I'd think its something like the 4th Hokage's
Body Flicker Teleportation Technique
As for Killing Spree. That would be just super fast movements (Think Naruto / Bleach / DBZ etc; ) where the background just one color and a few lines showing speed, or you are just 3-4 lines hitting the enemy. ...hic!
