Average Item Level

I was curious about my average item level. When you hover over your avg ilvl in you stats window, it say something along the lines of "Averages together your TOP gear's item level."
I was curious about how many of your "top" items are averaged. You have what 17 pieces of gear in total. How many of them effect your average item level. I mainly want to know so that I can get into heroics faster.
Thanks for any input, and sorry if this is a repost.

I'm not quite sure on the number, but I do know that gear in your inventory or bank increases it.

However it comes to the figure its quite confusing. It appears to take inventory in your bag (and possibly your bank) into accounts. And the more confusing thing is the new battle.net site lists a DIFFERENT average item level, as well as listing your equipped level.
I know inside the game it gives me a rating of 330 (enough for heroics) while the battle.net site lists me at 327, and wearing 320. Confusing.

I would hazard a guess that the average item level given to you in game is based off of the highest item level you have equipped/in your inventory for each equipment slot. So that means your highest item level helm/neck/shoulders/best two trinkets/etc.

It takes the highest level ilevel item from your bag for each slot of gear and averages them out.

If you want quickly into HCs, you can buy 333/346 ilvls off quatermasters if that slot is better than your current, your ilvl will go up and you don't have to equip it.

Battle.Net doesn't know what you have in your bags, while the game itself does. What has happened here, is that you have one item that's better (ilvl wise) than one you're wearing.
... I think.

There is definitely something more going on here. I have nearly all Cataclysm gear now, and a host of 333/346 as I gear up for heroics. My lone holdout has been an old ICC ring. I just cannot get a piece of gear to replace it.
So a DPS ring drops in a reguilar Cataclysm dungon, iLvl 333. I need on it and win it, it has 90 stamina more than my old ring and a boatload of mastery (I am a tank).
i equip it and prepare for iLvl-unlock goodness..... but my rank did not improve.
So either it takes your single highest ring for iLvl average calculation (Already had a tank 333 ring), or it knows that this ring is for retribution paladins, and as a tankadin, it would not be in my gear set and should not be counted as highest.
/i like the idea of the system being smart enough to invalidate pieces you got that aren't for your role, just to better your #$%^&*!@d gearscore, like how paladins would wear cloth just for the GS boost.

the Battle.net system actually states what your average ilevel is, and what you have equiped. It know's what you have in your bags. IT KNOWS! *panics*
My current Battle.net profile
- Game showed me 333 last night, site shows 330 average and 322 equipped.
Im thinking its a small discrepancy between what Battle.net and in-game check or calculate off. I do know in my bag I carry a JC Trinket, and in my bank I have a JC trinket for tanking. Maybe the game is checking my bank, while battle.net only checks bags.

It counts the highest ilevel you 'own' for each slot.
One small thing that was mentioned by the devs that is not mentioned here. Your highest and lowest item slots are NOT counted when the average is done.
The perfect example of this was my ellie shamen before Cata. He was a rarely played level 80 in mostly quest greens. I bought the ilvl 272 epic pvp shield (for 70 honor points), which was a drastic improvement over the ilvl 150 green shield I had. My overall ilevel barely went up.
So basically if you have one terrible slot, you aren't penalized at all for it, and if you find a way to exploit some loophole and get one great piece of gear, it doesn't help you that much either.
Your ilevel is kinda a combination between the average and median of your gear.

there seems to be a bunch of controversial positions. A guildee asked how to raise his avg. item level does anyone have a diffinative answer I can give him?
ilvl raises based on what is in your bags and if you can equip it for your class. So if the person is trying to get it high enough to run starter Pandaria heroics, he can do the last quests in a bunch of the zones, or have someone make him some items. If he's after LFR, he'll need 460 to start, then 470 and so on; each time the ilvl requirement goes up he can get new items out of the instances he'll be running.

To further Adamsm reply, the item doesn't actually have to be usable for your class. When I was nearing the ilvl required for Hc dungeons on mt DK a guildee made me the crafted cloth bracers to push my average ilvl over the edge.
