I'll start this off by moving the F3:NV discussion into here...
Well this is what you get when you don't play much. Fallout 3 New Vegas is my current addiction.
Yeah, N. I just spent a week watching/playing F3:NV with my friend on my vacation. I'm pretty sure I'll be buying it when I get home. I'm thinking of trying to do a full melee guy. Definitely not on hardcore. I don't really have any interest in micromanaging my food and water like that.
Talking about New Vegas, my first playthrough took 45 hours. I am currently going through my second game as a pure hand-to-hand combat character, and i am somewhere at 35 hours again, but i still have my quest log full of stuff.
edit: Also it is 3:27 in the morning and i just finished playing it. Crap, how am i gonna get up to work. Time passes by so fast when in Fallout.
edit2: And Cazadors are scary sons of *!@#$es.
How did the melee build go? Did you do Hardcore or just hard? What kind of skills did you focus on and what weapons did you end up prefering?
I'd make a new thread, but they'd move it out of here because it's not Druid related and I just want to talk to you, not everyone. Sorry for the (actually I'm not but I'll say it anyway) hijack.
I must admit that i did not do Hardcore and i play on a Normal difficulty. I always try to get Speech up to at least 50 asap, along with Repair, then i start building Science. When i have like 2-3 left over points (i tend to round my abilities up to fives), i put them into my combat skill of choice.
On my first playthrough i went the pretty much classic Sniper way. The preferrable weapon skill was Guns, and my fav weapons were a Marksman Carabine, Riot Shotgun, and Anti-Materiel Rifle (the ultimate bad ass sniper rifle). The Anti-Materiel rifle was quite useful against Deathclaws, who were tough as hell. I also preferred AP ammo over normal. I joined up with the New California Republic at the end.
Now i am running a melee build... i was counting with implants when i was making the character, so i went with: Str 9, Per 1, End 9, Cha 2, Int 8, Agi 8, Luck 5. The weapon skill of choice was Unarmed, of course, but i did not really level it since the beginning... i started off with Speech and Repair once again.
The perks i chose... a bunch of +% damage modifiers, like the perks that give 10% against men/women (the new dialogue options are great too), also got the perk that gives +2 skill points per level asap (lvl4), then i have the one that gives +50% unarmed damage against many common wasteland beasts, also Bloody Mess which adds an overall 5% dmg bonus... then i went for the tanking perks, two ranks of the one that increases DT by 3, and i also took the one that increases DT by 5 against melee attacks. Then of course stuff like that uber awesome repairing perk (Jury Rigging?). I have learned all the special melee techniques (Scribe Counter, Legion Assault, Ranger Takedown, Khan Trick), and my party member of choice is Cass (the perk she gives me enables me to drink as much Whiskey as i want without suffering from addiction, but most importantly, it adds a +3 DT bonus to Whiskey).
It plays pretty nice. There are not many enemies i couldnt just run to and destroy them. As for weapons, i went through brass knuckles, bladed gauntlet, power fist, spiked knuckles, up to my unique fist weapon called Pushy, which is kinda hard to find. I also got a pair of unique Spiked Knuckles that are called Love and Hate. The Pushy glove is insanely OP. I can kill an adult Deathclaw with two non-critical VATS blows. I stopped using it because it was no fun. So currently i run around with Love/Hate, that kill Deathclaws in more reasonable 5 hits. I also ended up being extremely durable and resilient, an adult Deathclaw has to hit me about 11 times to put me down, and he does minimal damage when i cower. A Legendary Deathclaw (strongest monster in the game) needed to hit me five times to kill me, while he only needs two to kill the characters of some guys i chat with on one fallout forum.
I am also siding with the Legion with this melee character. I am level 29 (1 level till capped :-/ ) and my Quest log is still crammed from the bottom to top, mostly sidequests. I discovered like 75% more content than on my first playthrough too. My character currently has Unarmed, Medicine, Lockpick, Science, Speech and Repair all leveled up to 100, and at level 30 i am gonna reach 100 in Barter.
(i also have 75 thousand caps, and i dunno what to do with them)
I'd guess that the purifier talent is pretty must for melee based char. And sneak seems crafty skill. Will have to see if I'll play it second time, that'd be my choice for second char.
Nice! That sounds really fun. That stat allocation sounds about right from what I was thinking of. I had read about Pushy and how to get it and it really did seem ridiculous. I'm OCD about even numbers on stuff too
:|.
Did you never take the SPECIAL perk?
Also, what do you think about going Melee instead of Unarmed?
Doesn't Power Armor increase your Strength by 2? Or is it only 1? Also what are the implants? That's a late game thing?
Do you really get a lot more out of Barter in the late game than the early game?
What about these perks?
- You gain one additional skill point for reading books and double the skill points for reading magazines.
- All melee (except thrown) and unarmed attacks have a chance of knocking your target down.
- +15% DT and Strength increased to 10 whenever health is 20% or lower
- +30 hit points.
- All your unarmed and melee attacks negate 15 points of DT.
- You do additional damage through enemy blocks with melee and unarmed attacks,
- Fourth "tag" skill: +15 points to that skill.
I'm sure I'll think of more questions.
Did you never take the SPECIAL perk?
Nah, the stats i have are pretty much everything i need. There are not many pure charisma checks, its all about speech, which i have plenty of. The only other thing Charisma affects is the DT and damage off your followers. Having 10 charisma makes your companions rather brutal. But i did not need it for this melee char, he is built for pure power, and can often take everything by himself.
Also, what do you think about going Melee instead of Unarmed?
Yeah, that might be fun too. I would combine Melee with Sneak, there is the Ninja perk that requires high skill in both. I really wanted to play through with a fist character though, because thats what i did in Fallout 2 as well. Also, when you use unarmed combat, you can learn 4 special attacks (i named them in my previous post) that you can use in combat. I often open fights with Legion Assault, when fighting many monsters in limited space and i can not backstep for the entire fight, i use Ranger Takedown, and any extremely powerful melee monsters can be taken by Scribe Counters. I did not test the Khan Trick much, but what it does is that i throw sand into the opponents eyes. I reckon this debuffs their chance to hit, but that is just my assumption.
Doesn't Power Armor increase your Strength by 2? Or is it only 1? Also what are the implants? That's a late game thing?
The T51 type power armor increases str by +1, and the T45b by +2. You can get implants fairly easilly, they do not require a quest to unlock or anything. Right behind the caravan headquarters near Vegas, there is a clinic where Doctor Usanagi works. She sells and implants the implants. You can buy a one-time +1 increase to any stat (i got +1 to Str, End, Int, and Agi), also a special implant that increases your damage resistance (i got that too), and an implant that gives you some passive hp regen. The amount of implants your body can take depends on your Endurance. The Endurance implant does give you a chance to choose one more implant. The only problem about them is their cost, they range from 4k to 12k.
Do you really get a lot more out of Barter in the late game than the early game?
Well, i am not really taking it for the decreased prizes and stuff, for i am currently sitting at about 75k caps. (not using ranged weapons really gets your money up) The only reason i level it is to get access to more dialogue options, i am a nut for extra dialogue options.

- You gain one additional skill point for reading books and double the skill points for reading magazines.
- All melee (except thrown) and unarmed attacks have a chance of knocking your target down.

- All your unarmed and melee attacks negate 15 points of DT.
- You do additional damage through enemy blocks with melee and unarmed attacks,
- Fourth "tag" skill: +15 points to that skill.
- I did pick that perk on my first playthrough. Its pretty solid, helped me to overcome a lot of obstacles and balance a few abilities around the number 80. I did not take it for the second playthrough though, wanted to try other things.
- I think the knockdown perk requires a high skill in Melee weapons, which i do not have. Or not? I dont know, but i did not take it. I can knock stuff down using the Ranger Knockdown special ability.
- Getting below 20% hp means you got into the one-shot range of a lot of enemies you will be fighting at the higher level. Usually, when i get that low, i start chugging stimpacks. And as melee, i already had the 10 STR, so half of the perk would be wasted.
- I was really considering the +30 hp perk, but i went for other, more game affecting choices.
- That is a pretty mandatory perk for Unarmed chars, and i have it ofc. With that perk, every punch to do is treated as if it was AP ammo (AP ammo ignores 15 pts of DT too). It made Deathclaws and Giant Radscorpions change from hunters to prey, from my pow.
- You do some minor damage through blocks even without that perk. Any human that uses a melee weapon is within my one-shot range, even if he attempts to block. It is funny how their arms tend to get torn away.
- I do plan to get the fourth Tag skill at level 30, that is how i will cap my Barter at 100. I do not recommend it in early game, better perks to take. The one that makes you get +2 skill points per level gives much more points than this perk too. Maybe even an early +1 to Int through that stat boosting perk might give more.
I like these questions. Remind me of when one girl from a forum i used to visit started playing Fable 2 (which i couldnt play, cause i have no consoles). I kept throwing tons and tons of questions about everything at her.
Haha. Thanks for the responses, then. I'll probably have more if/when I actually buy F3:NV. Or before.
Maybe if I name the thread
@Thror, RE: F3:NV the mods will leave it alone...

If anyone is up for a little history lesson, then you would probably be interested in two particular ancient topics where the natural druidic tendencies for derailing threads have severely manifested.
This is the first one. This is the second one.Warning, over 11 pages of good read in both topics.
Great idea, pelf! Also, this should totally be a sticky. xD As in, actual sticky, not a Helpful Thread :D
I was kinda expecting more F:NV questhuns :3
Also yay this nice girl that used to be my good friend ages ago came to me today and wants to be friends again.

<3 Cheers for posting them again man!
Will report this thread for sticky when it gets a name change ^_^ I quite like the suggestion Druid's Grove. Although the derailments tend to be on feral threads most of the times? :p
While this is still called Important Kitty Business, I'll
repost the picture of my cat (just to compete with Thror's muahaha)
Edit:i think an honorable mention is in order then...
Can we close this thread now? It was only on topic for 2 posts.
NO!GTFO if you don't like the druis topics. Important kitty business going on here ಠ_ಠDenied.
