I'll admit that I play Minecraft, though I haven't touched it in the past week because of the L4D2 content that has been released.
I tried the Classic version and liked it but due to griefers, I shied away from it and bought the alpha version.
For a couple of weeks, I played the single player Alpha.
As fun as it was, it felt lonely so my girlfriend and I tried to see if we could set up a server. After a few hours of tinkering with my router, we successfully set up our own Alpha server and have been playing it since. :D
Once you set it up, you'll slap yourself over how simple it was.
Caution: Messing with your router could knock out your internet in some fashion and cause deep, seething hatred towards me. Use at your own risk.
Also, I am immune to hatred.
Most people have trouble opening a port for a Minecraft server:
What we had to do was make my IP static and go into my router and open port "25565". (The default port for Minecraft.)
-To make your IP static,
follow this guide.*
If I can, I will try to help but I'm willing to bet there is someone else on the forums better suited to this.
*It will tell you that you can pay money for the software but it's just a tricky little ad, just skip it.
-To go into your router, open your web browser and either go to the default access site located underneath your router or type in your internal IP in the address bar. By default, your username is "admin" and your password is "password".
(To find your intenal IP: Start > Run > type 'cmd' then enter. When the window loads, type 'ipconfig' and press Enter. It should then give it to you.)
-Yours may be a little different but I went to the setting "Port Forwarding/Port Triggering" and selected "Add a service"
-You will then be prompted to name the service (You can call it Minecraft server or whatever, it doesn't matter.)
-TCP Protocol
-Starting port: 25565 (By default this is the minecraft port)
-Ending port: 25565 (Ditto)
-The blank part of this partially filled address is for the rest of your internal IP address when you made it static. (I can't word this any better atm)
With that done, the server is pretty much set up. If you are hosting the server, you get people to connect by typing in your external IP address (You can find that out by just googling "what is my ip?" and there is a site that will tell you.) As a host, you can just type in "localhost" to connect to your server.
As for what we've been building, I'll see if I can't upload some pictures. There's not much but we've had fun making it along with our friends :)
Edit: If this post is truly helpful, I will format it so it is a lot more clearer. It's a bit late atm. =/

Well I played classic for a while, did not do that much, explored some caves, flooded some valleys, built some random houses.
Now I have Alpha and it is epic, I have built an observation tower surrounded by traps, a forest filled with cacti and giant trees to have epic battles in, a massive tower covered in lights in the middle of my base. Not the kind of tower you just place to find your home, a proper tower equivalent of that. And I have a small safe house where I spawn, plus a few underground farms. Oh and I have explored several massive cavern systems.
Nothing too amazing really, and I usually do not bother making everything neat and tidy, but all in all I am pretty happy about what I have done so far.
Edit: Oh and before I forget; can't wait until the hell update! :D

Yes the Alpha does have a lot more than the Classic mode and it's a lot more fun playing with friends than alone.
I'd offer my server for wowhead to use but it's not as nice as other servers (I really don't feel like learning how to use Python atm) and it's not up a lot of the time. =/
It's really only up when we feel like playing.

I fear the hell update will ruin Minecraft for me. I don't want to have to keep making torches!
Q_Q
And he didn't do a very good job of explaining the 'lava world' or teleportation system or whatever.
That is why there are lanterns, the torches burn out, though the lanterns last forever and are harder to make. Fortunately Notch said all torches already existing on saved game maps before the update will turn into lanterns. Also normal torches, which only burn for a while, will be relit using flint and tinder rather than you having to replace them all the time.
One thing that would annoy me though is if he goes ahead and makes those monsters he said will break lanterns, that would just be gay having an entire base filled with lanterns suddenly turn dark thanks to one freakin mob. I do not mind having to walk through dark places at times, but that would just get annoying.

Here's a few of the many things I've built in Survival Multiplayer (currently combat doesn't work in this mode :( )
A Maze, it's taller and enclosed in a dome complete with huge glass sections for windows.
A multi-level tree farm forest.
An undersea tunnel with water curtain walls.
Rockin underground forests (This is just the first of many that have since been planted here)
Towers of Fire and Water (next to my first level of trees)
A Fortress
P.S. Be careful with your flint when planting a forest.

I don't play, but Fony just tweeted
this video
. Figured you folks that are into Minecraft would appreciate it.
It's even more impressive when you consider the fact that a day/night cycle takes 20 minutes to complete. So that video's around 8 times faster than it actually happened.

I spawned a new world and went exploring and found something
amazing.
I decided to
hollow out
the right standalone structure, and make it my base. While messing around with the floor I found
a
c
a

e
with a
small
deep
lake. Further exploring I found an even more expansive lake. I'll upload a video of that soon
