Buying a World of Warcraft Account, Cataclysm
Return to board index
This is what I've been trying to Post on WoW forum, couldn't for some reason so I turned here.
Hey. How's everyone doing?
Let me start with a little introduction.
I'm new here, though I am not new to the Whole concept of the World of Warcraft.
I've been around for quite some time, I've had several friends who played in this very game in this specific Europien server.
And so It came to me that lately I've been having planty of free time with a spare $ to sapre.
So, I was wondering about a few things which I hope that people here can help me find out.
First of all, the account itself.
I've made a Battlenet account. In order to start playing World of Warcraft, what am I supposed to buy?
I didn't quite understand that.
Do I need to upgrade this account into a a full Retail Account? if so what are the costs?
Second of all, do I even need to buy a "Account?" or can I just start by paying per month?
Third of all, Cataclysm. The Point is that I want to join the Retail Server when Cataclysm comes out, which is maximum at December since it's due to 2010.
When I buy an account, do I need to buy an Upgrade to The Burning Cursade, then to the WoTLK and THEN to Cataclysm? is there any way to just Buy an Account and then Upgrade it straight to Cataclysm?
More on that, i've added a Trail Account to this Battlenet account, which I just now came to realize is a Huge waste, since i won't be playing in these 10 days, so....When I do buy an Account do I get some free trail of some sort? or something to get started with? or do I automaticlly start paying per month?.
And my finally question i guess will be.
If I decide to purchase the Game itself, not an online account, what are the differences?
And again, do I need to buy ALL the expensions? or can I just by WoW + WoW Cataclysm expension?
Thanks In advance for any kind of help or answer.
Your's truly....Lets call me.... Umm...
"That Guy" :P
You have your Battle.net account. Now, in order to play WoW, you need account keys to upgrade to the retail versions. Technically, there is a key for each part of the game (WoW, then each expansion.)
Frankly, I recommend simply getting the World of Warcraft Battle Chest, which, these days, has Original WoW, BC and the content for Wrath of the Lich King (without patches) all on a single DVD. It comes with keys to activate your account and upgrade to Burning Crusade version. (The Battle Chest costs about the same as a single game.)
At this point, you'll still need to buy a key to upgrade to a Wrath of the Lich King account. You can do this digitally, or I believe you can buy it online.
You mentioned you were planning on waiting for Cataclysm to come out. At that point, the Battle Chests will probably include a Wrath Key as well, at which point you'll only need to get the Chest and a key for Cataclysm.
As for your trial account -- I don't think you can add trial time to the account, so you'd have to make another. Depending on what you're planning on doing, however, you may not need to bother. From what I'm told, on a trial account, you're limited to Vanilla (original WoW) content, so if you wanted any of the BC races, or the Cataclysm races, you wouldn't be able to pick them, so you'd have to restart at that point regardless.
To quote myself...
Technically, the game (client) is offered to anyone for free with the agreement that you'll only use it the way Blizzard intends you to. You account, however, is another story. That's the part you're really paying for when you buy the discs and pay the monthly subscription. The price of the disc is actually the activation cost to add that content (via the cd key) to your account, and the monthly subscription is the what they charge to keep your account activated.
Given that information, yes, you will have to buy the original WoW, Burning Crusades, Wrath of the Lich King, and Cataclysm once it's released. My suggestion is to buy the Battle Chest (Vanilla+BC) from a store, then Wrath once you're getting your first toon close to 68 (or 55 if you
want a DK asap). Also, Vanilla gives you 30 days free, then you have to start paying for your account. If you want to maximize your free time then create a trial and play it for the 10 days (can't level any toon past 20, but you can level multiple toons to that point) then upgrade that trial to Vanilla for an additional 30 days free.
Oh, and the reason I suggested buying the Battle Chest from Best Buy or GameStop or something is that (last time I checked) the Battle Chest was $30 but the individual games were still $20 each, online or retail. Only buy Wrath along with the others if it's on sale or you have money to blow and
that you'll be continuing the game.
I know I didn't run down the list and answer each question individually, but I think I got all the information across. Let me know if anything is still unclear.
Basically everything is clear, just verifying a few things.
I currently do not live in a city which has Best buy shops and etc.
So I'll need to probably buy the CD keys online, to minimize the costs, cause here it costs like a Gazilion $ to get just one expension.
So just to be clear, you've said I need to buy a Key to each expension?
getting a Retail account for x$ and then upgrading it to TBC for y$ and then Upgrading it again to WoTLK content for xy$ and THEN! XD upgrading one last time to Cataclysm (when it comes out) for another xyx$ right?
There's no way in just getting WoW account and then just upgrading it to Cataclysm without the need to upgrade it to TBC+WoTLK.
Edit : AND THANK YOU BTW for the long dedicated replay, I seriously appreciate it !
True, you must apply a valid CD key for each and every expansion. Hopefully they drop the price for a boxed set in the future. Also, no problem for the in depth explanation.
Thanks man, appriciated a lot :)
Have a Great new year :D
