Dalaran (aka Dalaran City) is a magocratic city-state and was once located within the Alterac Mountains in the Eastern Kingdoms. Recently, the city, including the Violet Citadel, was somehow moved to its current location floating above the Crystalsong Forest in Northrend.

History and Background Dalaran was introduced as the neutral city for the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, similiar to how Shattrath City was introduced as the neutral city for the The Burning Crusade expansion. The city contains areas that are faction-specific in the same manner as Shattrath City is divided amongst the Aldor and Scryers. The Silver Enclave can be accessed by Alliance players (guarded by Silver Covenant); likewise, Sunreaver's Sanctuary can only be accessed by Horde players (guarded by The Sunreavers). The rest of the city remains neutral. Similar to how Stormwind City and Orgimmar have instances within each city—The Stockade and Ragefire Chasm respectively—Dalaran has its own instance: The Violet Hold, the magical prisons where all kinds of dangerous beasts and spellcasters are held. At one point even the elven prince Kael'thas Sunstrider was a convict there, but was rescued by Lady Vashj. Also similar to Shattrath City, there are no class trainers; however, given the history of Dalaran, there are mage trainers. Additionally, Grand Master Trainers may also be found in Dalaran. Portals to each of the Alliance and Horde capital cities, as well as a portal to Shattrath city, can be found in the Horde and Alliance-specific sections of Dalaran. Finally, a portal trainer can be found at the Violet Gate, as well as battleground portals and Battlemasters, located in Dalaran's underbelly. Flying over Dalaran is now possible provided you keep a healthy distance from the ground. Getting to Dalaran Although Dalaran is in midair, it is still possible for players without a flying mount nor its flight spot to get to Dalaran. Below are the methods which can be used to get Dalaran. Mages can learn to teleport to Dalaran after completing the short Dragonblight quest Attunement to Dalaran (Alliance / Horde) available at level 71. Mages can learn to open a portal to Dalaran at level 74 from the portal trainer located in Dalaran. Warlocks can also summon players to Dalaran. Anyone who has reached level 74 can pick up the quest The Magical Kingdom of Dalaran (Alliance / Horde / Neutral) from any of several members of the Kirin Tor. This quest will offer a one-time teleport to Dalaran. Once a player has arrived in Dalaran, they can complete the quest (Quest #12790) to allow them future access to Dalaran by using the teleport crystal below the city. The quest requires level 68. Several level 80 rings that teleport the player to Dalaran are available for 8500g each. They can be inscribed for an additional 1250g. Any player who has learned (Spell #54197) may fly themselves to Dalaran. Cold Weather Flying requires level 77 and costs 1000g. (Item #49177), however, can be used on level 68+ characters to attain Cold Weather Flying, but purchasing the tome can only be done on level 80 characters.
