“Troen? Troen Faithhammer is that you?” asked the Night Elf Priestess.
The shadowy figure continued to stumble up the slope towards the Keep, nearly swooning with every clumsy step.
“Yes, friend, it is I.” said the Paladin, clearly struggling to draw breath.
A few feet from the Priestess’ feet, he collapsed. The wounds caused by the gheists he had fought were not mortal, but the bitter cold and the loss of blood from his battles had greatly weakened Troen. His hammer lay beside him, glowing softly.
The Priestess ran to his side, calling to several of her sisters for aid in moving the Paladin to safety. None of this reached Troen’s ears however, for he had fallen unconscious, deeply lost in a bitter memory.
A house engulfed in roaring flames. Children screaming.
“Papa, help us! Papa! Please!”
His wife’s bloody, broken body on the ground.
Undead aberrations assaulting him as he tried to free his trapped children, fighting off sobs at the sight of his dear wife’s corpse.
“We’ve done everything we can, High Commander. The Paladin’s body is completely healed.” reported the Priestess.
“Then why isn’t he awake?” replied High Commander Halford.
“While we were able to heal the wounds of his body, it appears that his most grievous injuries are in his mind. His sleep is plagued with nightmares; he often shouts and seizes in the night.”
Arriving broken and bloodied atop a tired horse at the gates of Stormwind. Guards rushing out to meet the battered man.
“My family…slaughtered…Scourge in…Duskwood.” stammered the man.
“We’ve done everything we can for him, High Commander. Nothing has been able to wake him.”
“Report directly to me if his condition changes in the slightest, Priestess.”

Several hours later, Troen opened his eyes, confused and disoriented.
“Troen? Can you hear me?” asked the melodic and familiar voice of a female Night Elf.
“Kalira? Kalira Moonshadow is that you?” replied Troen, struggling to sit up.
“Yes, it’s me. Let me help you.” said Kalira as she came to his side. “You’ve been unconscious for two days now.”
“And let me guess, you’ve been beside me the whole time?” he asked wryly.
“Those Sisters of Elune had other wounded to attend to. They couldn’t spend all their time at the beck and call of a single Paladin.”
“You always seem to be there.”
His sudden change in tone from playful to intense caught the Night Elf off guard. She locked stares with him and saw not only deep appreciation in his eyes, but trust and respect.
“Well, someone has to keep you alive.” she said with a wink.
They shared a genuine, joyous laugh, enjoying each other’s company despite the circumstances.
“Troen, I need to go let High Comander Wyrmbane know that you are awake. I’ll be back soon.”
As the graceful Kalira left his room, Troen felt a deep sense of thankfulness for his friend’s loyalty.
The Light provides
, he thought to himself with a smile.
Edited for a line break.

- Heh, when I read the part about the wife I was reminded of a story I was writing (yes an actual story) but that was later discared because I realized that their were no Death Knight before Arthas.
- Or was I mistaken?

There were DKs before Arthas, yes. The very first DKs were Orc souls imprisoned in human bodies by the Shadow Council.

The man in Duskwood is Troen, before he ventured to Northrend. The children died in the fire.

I assumed that Troen was the man, just didn't want to openly assume it and get it wrong../facepalm.
Such a shame about all his family though. ):

I'm not sure if I follow you. I wouldn't say that the relationship itself always ends badly (see Turalyon/Alleria) but I do agree that more often than not the circumstances in which those couples find themselves are less than stellar.

Yeah, this is true. But I ment Scourge Death Knights.
Note to self: Be more specific.
Second Note to Self: Stop talking to yourself.
Dang it...

nice...if i may say something, elf/human relationships
ALWAYS
end up badly
use it to your advantage!
Not really, see Turalyon and Alleria, Rhonin and Vareesa.
But Sylvanas/Arthas ended badly enough for all of them, lol

Thanks! I'll be writing it soon. Things have gone slowly since the first two because I've come down with a touch of something and haven't felt well. When I get it finished though, I will be compiling them into a post (like ArgentSun mentioned in his post on these forums) and updating the story from there.
