The old, grizzled shaman crooked his giant, green forefinger at the shadows.
"Come closer little ones, so that this old one might see you more clearly."
He coughed. His small, beady eyes gazing towards them expectantly. Five little Orc children shuffled into the light of the dying fire. Now that they had been invited, they seemed to have gotten over their temporary shyness. One large boy with the build of a warrior spoke up.
"Tell us a tale Shaman!"
The other childrens faces lit up.
"A tale, a tale!"
they parroted.
Kul'gosh coughed again, rattling his whole frame. A once large, meaty hand pounded his frail chest, trying to dislodge the illness that resided there.
"A tale you say?"
he asked, smiling at them.
"One gift demands another!"
he said.
"An eye for an eye! A tooth for a tooth! Such is the way of our people and the shamans. The elements do not give their gifts freely, and neither do I! My old bones ache on cold nights like this, so if you would hear a tale of mine, you must bring more wood for my fire."
A few minutes later the children had returned with a few pieces of kindling and laid it near the fire. They sat down near the fire and waited eagerly.
"I suppose you want to hear your story now?"
Kul'gosh asked teasingly.
"Yes please, old one!"
they shouted.
"Very well,"
he sighed.
"I suppose I did promise."
The children all nodded.
"Well,"
he said.
"It was a night much like this, yet the stars were different, and shone their light upon a different land."
"Was it named Durotar too?"
the littlest child asked.
Kul'gosh chuckled and stuck out his gnarled hand, ruffling up her coarse, black hair.
"No little one. It was called Draenor and at the time it was red and dusty like Durotar, yet it had not always been so. Once it had been a green and lush place where we were able to hunt in peace, yet then trouble came to our peaceful land. In the form of demons hiding under the skin of Orcs."
he turned and spat. The children all gasped.
"What was their names?"
they asked.
"You misunderstand me,"
Kul'gosh replied.
"They were all Orcs, yet they betrayed their people, and were tainted by the shadow of demons. So for all purposes they were demons. There leader was a Warlock by the name of Gul'dan, and he was the evilest of them all, yet at the time, we did not know it. All of the clans except the Frostwolf clan fell for the demons trick and we followed him and his minions, the Shadow Council. They opened up a gate that led us here to this world. Azeroth. I was one of the first of our people to travel from Draenor to Azeroth, but I was not the last. I went through the portal under the command of Blademaster Hur'gun and our mission was simple. To scout out the world for conquest by the greedy Shadow Council. Yet as soon as we exited the portal, things went wrong."
The children all gasped again.
"What happened then?"
asked the one that had started chanting for a tale first.
Kul'gosh smiled and said,
"That will have to wait till the next night, little one. We don't want to rush the story, now do we?"
The children all groaned and stood up, heading out into the night and back towards their tents, chatting excitedly about what they had heard. Kul'gosh stood up slowly, wincing as bones creaked. He shambled towards his tent, leaning on his dry, old staff; his mind flashing back to those red days when he had been young and full of blood rage. He looked up at the sky, his cowl falling back and the light of the stars and the White Lady reflecting in his red eyes. A tear trickled out of the corner of his eye and ran down the channels made in his face by his wrinkles.
"Forgive me."
he muttered, remembering the blood shed that had occurred so many years ago.
