T
he Protection Paladin is a complex and strange creature where tword the end of the game can have one of the biggest sets of gear of any class or roll in the game. My new personally defines goal of the paladin is one thing that encompasses all else we will do; mitigate or avoid 100% of mitigated/avoidable damage in any given encounter. From staying alive to &*!@ing the boss off enough that its attention is yours and controlled by you. Sometimes this even means gearing for DPS to down a boss faster. Dead bosses do noit wipe raids. But if you die in the process, you cannot mitigate raid damage. The ultimate goal is to have the ratio of damage taken by you, and damage taken by the raid or party as high in your favor as possible. How the hell does one figure out this balance? Read on for the crash course of what it takes to excel at this roll.

CATACLYSM WIP:
I
'll be adding bit of information here as I tank heroics and read various sources of information. It will mainly be a consolidation section for advanced users that gives a TLDR version of gathered information. I will provide source links as I see them.
`
Lowest Damage Intake:
Stack Parry to ~940 rating.
Stack Dodge to ~820 rating.
1255 AC is roughly equivalent to 1 Mastery Skill (179rating).
Start stacking Mastery while keeping the above numbers close.
Smoothest Damage Intake:
Stack/Reforge/Gem into Mastery as much as possible while staying over roughly 140k HP pre-raid.
BLOCK CAP?
/run dr=function(x)return 1/(1/65.63144+0.9560/x)end;DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Need 102.4 - Currently at: "..string.format("%.2f", (GetDodgeChance())+GetBlockChance()+(GetParryChance())+5))
Gear Profiles:
Pre-Raid
Reforge doesn't work yet, and its generally buggy. Will need to wait for the codemonkeys @ wowhead to fix it to see accurate numbers.
This profile wont cost you 5-12k gold to complete a single piece. If you want to spend a lot, then you should already know what pieces you want, as they are either in your profession or made of pure gold--err
Elementium
. Also, if you're going to spend the money on the chest, consider the 'dps' chest. After reforging crit into dodge/parry, it comes out nearly the same avoidance/mitigation as the 'tank' chest, and can be used in your ret set. This is a Blizzard fail in itemization, use it to your advantage.

FAQ:
Whats our rotation?
We dont really have one. But if we did it would be called 939. Basically it is CS-J-CS-X-CS-ShoR/Inquisition where X can be AS,HW or Cons. Replace CS with HotR for 2+ mobs.
Where is the defense gear?
It capped out and disappeared, stack Mastery.
Keybindings: A Wheel Good Time.
From this we can get a large amount of abilities bound with minimal hand movements. The mouse wheel is an important thing to consider, for any class or any roll, and actually gaming in general, it is a powerful tool. Alone it is capable of three(3) keybinds; up-down-press. When you introduce shift, it doubles to six(6). When you slap in alt it jumps up to twelve(!12). This is all with minimal movement and it is spamable with casual flicks of the mouse wheel.
The logic I apply to the wheel is a simple one; unmodified wheelup is my main macro or attack. wheeldown is my main proc or secondary attack (TV/Inq/ShoR), Shift is my main modifier based on hand placement. The pinky is naturally on shift (or should be), thus Shift-up is usually bound to distance attacks or for pulls. AD/Judgement/Exo type macro. Shift-down if for short term CC (HoJ). Alt is filler for whatever else, I do not have them bound to up or down right now.
MidMouse: AoE Targeted abilities(bombs) or finishers(HoW)
Shift-MM: CC(repentance)
Alt-MM: Party/Raid help (Holky Radiance/Divine Guardian macro)
Alt-1: Concecration/other low priority
Alt-2: AW/other zerg

This is on a per-itemization point basis. All in ratings. After 540 defense, dont worry about it. For raid level avoidance, dodge will start to become less effective than parry. To find out if youre at that point, use this macro I made: /run dodge=function(x)return x-10 end; parry=function(y)return (y-10)*1.86+10 end;DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("You may currently stack Dodge% upto: "..string.format("%.2f"%,parry(GetParryChance())))
Heroic
- 535 Defense >>> Dodge = Agility > Parry > Block > Expertise
Raid Level
- 540 Defense >>> Dodge = Agility = Parry > Block > Expertise
3. Effective Health
Health comes on tanking gear. So does avoidance. Heroics are not Raids. With this new profound knowledge go forth and gear accordingly. AC is for non magical damage only. You cannot block magic damage either. The only defense against magical damage besides resist gear, is pure sweet, sweet, HP.
Heroic
- 535defense > HP > Block Value > Block Rating > Armor > 101.6% (block-cap)
Raids
- 540defense > HP > Armor > Block Rating > Block Value > 102.4% (block-cap)
Unavoidable & Unblockable attacks
- 540def > HP > Armor
4. How Close am i to BlockCap?
This is a more accurate macro of finding how close you are to 102.4%(unhittable-everything is a block or avoided) status.
Understand that this will differ from many other similar macros. This macro is accurate. This macro floors defense, as Blizzard does in game. This will give you perfect numbers, others will give you approximations.
/run dr=function(x)return 1/(1/16+0.9560/x)end;DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Need 102.4 - Currently at: "..string.format("%.2f", GetDodgeChance()+GetBlockChance()+GetParryChance()+5+dr(floor(GetCombatRatingBonus(CR_DEFENSE_SKILL))*0.04)))
5.
Rotation
There are several different types of this rotation, most of them will sacrifice a low TPS ability, and substitute in a higher TPS ability like
Exo
or
AS
.

Q

A
: Benediction comes out to 27MP5 per point. If you need mana regen, 1 more point in S/A is worth
three times
more than 5 in benediction @ 1.6k DTPS (damage taken per second). 4 free points and bonus mana for you! Differant story in PvP where you wont be taking consistant damage and Parry loses alot of luster.

Basic prot spec advice:
SotP Isn't as bad as it used to be, but not a good all around contender. At best its only very slightly better, at worse its nothing to think about.
Reckoning is hot in 5mans. (for threat generation)
PoJ is worth 7% run-speed and ~85 health.

Judgements of the Just is %16.5 melee avoidance @ 2/2. 9.1% @ 1/2.

He changed the glyphs there, I don't think it's necessary to do all that linking just to show different glyph options, but that's just my opinion. Also, you could use
embedded
links, they look better, and are easier to read imho.
Thanks for the info and effort.

Some people *cough* like to take every possible keep-me-alive ability within reach, at the expense of TPS. So this is for them.
Also, your spelling sucks.

TPS = Threat per second.
It limits your raid's DPS.

According to sources, 1/2 spiritual attunment is enough.
1/2 guarded by the light is also enough if you're not facing something where every spell damage reduction counts.
I would pick up some threat from the Crusade talent.

Nice builds up there, and good work so far :) just two quick questions:
1. Why don't you max out Divinity.
2. Given the uptime of Argent Defender is it really worth the talent points? Addmittedly when it is needed, it really is needed, but you shouldn't really ever for to your last 35% of Hp, means something has gone very wrong....
Post by
blademeld
Because we have enough overhealing at the moment.
Because regardless of the upkeep of Ardent Defender, unless a boss hits right over AD, it provides a fixed "Effective Health".
Post by
Quest
Divinity is going to contribute mainly to overhealing. in heroics/raids at 80.
Its very important to understand this (as alot of people dont); The damage AD mitigates, is the damage that
would have killed you.

No pvp builds? Damn shame. Oh well I'll toss one out there since my brother and I are doin arena this weekend. We plan to run Ret and Prot Pallies. The Idea is for me the prot to provide stuns and dmg mitigation for his squishy ass while he proceeds to command people into their graves.

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#sZVGzAruGhsIufdVfM0b:RMLczV
This build focus' on offensive utility. You want to use your stuns, avenger shld, shld of righteousness, judgement of justice, and stay within melee range to proc your divine plea and seal of justice. One thing I am not clear on is if seal of justice is PPM for the stun, if so then I might take reckoning talent pts away and put them into ret for more crit. Defensively you will use sacred shld, divine guardian, divine sacrifice, and when or if you have to bubble pop some holy lights. Hoefully with the amount of stuns I will be using it will increase my brother's dmg with seal of command.
4-5PPM.

Because it's Quest's personal preference.
I'm pushing for DS + 2/2 DG as well.
The Glyph of Divine Plea is discovered, therefore it won't be available immediately.

I'm still up for suggestions in builds, tweaks here and there. Im not a huge fan of divinity either (ment to change it sooner) so this change could be arranged...
Youll see GDP within a week im sure... for 300gold.

Just thinking out loud guys, but would it be worth trying Vindication instead of Pursuit of Justice?
Surely if the mobs loose 15% of their health they will die quicker, 15% agi/str/int they will do less dmg and with the int loss they would also go oom quicker.
I've never had any real threat problems from being disarmed and faster movement speed doesn't seem to be worth the points for a tank.
As i said, just thinking out loud. Correct me if i'm wrong.
