Those pesky Old Gods again! After so many months I thought I had them all figured out - Azeroth created, they pop out of nowhere, become parasites on the world itself, and are no more than 4-5. It was working wonderfully! And now Blizzard serve me this from their website:
Long ago, the titans encountered a race of horrifying aberrations known as the Old Gods. Their destructive powers threatened to unravel Azeroth, eliminating all life and order. Alerted by this danger to their central tenets, the titans went to war against the Old Gods. Ultimately the titans used their prowess in architecture and construction to imprison their foes deep underground.
Source
.
Well, here is what really ticks me off. If there are only 5 Old Gods (and multiple sources indicate so), then there is no point in calling them a "race". We don't really call the Titans a race, and they are far closer to be being one than the Old Gods are. It's a thing small enough for Blizzard to pull a lorelol...
So what on Azeroth are they?

The short answer: they are future bosses for WoW expansions. It seems to me that's the only real well-thought-out story about them.
That leaves other questions. What are the new gods? And where does this "light" come from?

A few weeks ago we had a loverly discussion on
Ye Old Gods in this topic
. The data in there still holds true, regardless of the number of Old Gods... The Aesir (the Norse Gods) were a RACE, despite there only being ~20 of them... The Greek Titans are considered a RACE, despite the fact that there are only 12 of them.
Besides, nobody said that all the Old Gods inhabit Azeroth... Azeroth was a mere footnote in the Titanic scheme, it just happened to be the first place the Titans found Old Gods leeching off their creation. Countless numbers of Old Gods could exist on planets not mentioned in Blizzard Lore. Just the fact that they are referred to as a "race" as opposed to "The fantastic five" is no reason to poo your panties.

Awesome. I agree that old gods are just whatever blizzard wants them to be. I'm just curious if the Forgotten One from WC3 is an old god, because he was a tough fight.

The forgotten one in WCIII was a servant of Yogg-Saron ;)
Check this out for some background:

It all depends how you define "race". There's many meanings to the word, but I don't think there's a real minimum amount before (again, depends how you define it).
While I know Wikipedia isn't really a good source in terms of correctness, the idea is easily gotten just by looking at this page:

Reading that made me wonder. The Origin of a Species: Old Gods states that "the Titans deviate from their pattern, and they return to Azeroth to find the Old Gods ". That means almost every planet in the warcraft lore can be "infected" by Old Gods. And we only know like three planets to compare with and zero titans to interview.
To make a large leap here, Sargeras got infected by the first demon race, the Dreadlords. Old God infect planets. We don't even know why those Old Gods are here and what they are doing right? Maybe it's a massive plot to corrupt the universe! Maybe the Old Gods just wanted to make friends for their tea parties! Owh wait I'm going to far now
At another note; Wowwiki calls Titans a race.

I think of them as 'deities' because considering them a race makes me feel racist when I hate them. Dang you C'Thun!

I'm starting to get confused with the 2 types of Old Gods: Forgotten Ones (C'thun, Yogg-Saron) and the Elemental Lords (Ragnaros), it seems that the Twilight Cult worships them all. Both of them were imprisoned beneath Azeroth by the Titans.

Vernadris, one paragraph back
...This dark race of vampiric demons (also known as dreadlords) conquered a number of populated worlds by possessing their inhabitants and turning them to the shadow. The nefarious, scheming dreadlords turned whole nations against one another by manipulating them into unthinking hatred and mistrust. Sargeras defeated the Nathrezim easily, but their corruption affected him deeply.
Partly mistaken, it's not the direct kind of corruption/infection I thought, but still a form of it.
Maybe the Old Gods are what you'd call "The Good", and maybe the Titans are the "bad guys". It's a POV question.
So if the Gods are good, Titans are bad. That means Sargeras is the good guy, that means the demons are working for the good guy. That means that we are the evil beings in the universe!
To make it more confusion, we are the spawns of cursed creations from the Titans. That means the Old Gods tried to free us from the "evil" Titans. And as "thank you" we try to kill them! Aren't we delightful evil?
Of course you can explain it all into fitting lore, but isn't that the power of Blizzard? To make great lore out of small ideas and improve it to make sense.
Who knows that we will discover about Old Gods in time? What kind of universal
tea party
... chaos is planned?
More on topic. Maybe Blizzard means the race of Faceless Ones/Forgotten Ones/Old Gods and other weird creatures(Like that general from Ulduar). There isn't a correct them to call them by and they all seem to be from the same "race".

the olds gods shouldn't be counted as a race. They are kinda like a bee queen. They spawn several forgotten one who serves as an army for them or like cthun did find some other intelligent race and turns them into more like themself. kind of corruption process.
The number is also varying some, there is in few sources 3 old gods and others contains more.
A good example is hakkar, hakkar counts as either an old god or son to the an old god. So hakkar shifts the number of old gods.
here is link about to wowwiki about old gods:
http://www.wowwiki.com/Old_gods#The_Number_of_Old_Gods
There is also some discussion about how many old gods that existed in azeroth to begin with and what exactly makes an old god or makes them a forgotten one. Some says that all forgotten on is old gods, but only the more powerful and older ones becomes true old god who corrupt and twist minds. So it is not that unlikely that the number will shift.

Hakkar's relation to the Old Gods is purely speculation right now... Hakkar is a TROLL God, and we
now
know
alot
more
about
them
. I doubt (I mean SERIOUSLY doubt) that they are actually related to the Old Gods. What they are is far beyond me, but I would imagine that they are a race nearly as old and bitter as the Nathrezim or the Old Gods.
